During a visit to the immigration department at the NSCBI airport in Kolkata, he launched a new retro reflective device. “This device is like a small torch. When you throw light on the photo in a passport, it is easy to make out if the photo has been tampered with,” said Chakraborty.
After talking to the staff at the immigration counters, the commissioner said that voice recorders and phones would be connected by intercom. “ This will help the staff get in touch with the shift-in-charge while they are still seated at the counters,” he said. Besides gadgets, new uniforms were introduced for the immigration staff at the airport from today. “The uniforms with a badge saying ‘immigration’ will help passengers to identify the staff for assistance,” said Chakraborty.
Agreeing that the immigration clearance was not always up to the expectations of a passenger, he said that more specialised training was required for the immigration staff. He announced that the Chief Immigration Officer, Eastern India, Basab Talukdar, is conducting a manpower audit to ascertain if the number of immigration staff needed to be increased.
