Although Tardeo police have arrested the driver of the vehicle, one Imran Kapadia, they still have to take any action against its owner, Ghai Simran Singh, who resides at Ram Manohar Lohia Nagar in Kurla.
“We are investigating the case. The driver, Kapadia, was arrested while the owner Singh, has not been arrested yet,” said R R Late, police sub inspector and the investigating officer in the case.
The Japanese-make Nissan Murano was moving around on a false number plate (MH-43-A-4975) and was stopped by RTO officials at E Moses Road, Mahalaxmi in the evening.
According to Anandram Wagle, RTO inspector, the old series of the registration made him suspicious about the car, which costs around Rs 40 lakh. “The registration number of the car caught my attention, as it was a 2005 series registration while the car looked brand new. Therefore, I asked the vehicle to pull over and asked the driver to produce its documents and license, which he failed to do,” Wagle said.
The registration number which the SUV used belonged to a Hyundai Santro registered in the name of one Uday Shivram Purohit, a Vashi resident.
Wagle also said that the vehicle had one temporary registration certificate issued from an RTO in Kerala. “The temporary registration certificate was issued on November 2, 2007 and expired on November 9, 2007,” he added.
The accused have been booked for cheating and forgery under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
