Chandigarh, January 15 Hundreds of teachers from aided colleges in the city assembled in front of the office of DPI (Colleges), Punjab in Sector 17 and burnt copies of the amendments made to the Security of Service Act 1974 by the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) had given the strike call.

The employees also demanded strict penalities against colleges that have not implemented provisions of the Panjab University calendar regarding deduction of provident fund on gross salary and encashment of earned leave.

Prof Rakesh Mehta, president, Chandigarh District Council of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) said, “The Panjab University letter dated 20-09-2007 has lost its relevance, as it has not been implemented. We were forced to adopt this method of protest, as PU authorities could not implement the provisions of the calendar. No penalties have been imposed on erring colleges, though many formal complaints have been lodged.”

Prof Anil Sarwal, PCCTU vice-president said, “PCCTU should have been consulted before the amendments were carried out. It is unfortunate that the Punjab government has ignored a democratically elected representative body of teachers. Such unilateral decisions cannot be accepted.”
