Washington, January 31: The Bush administration has underlined the need for free and fair elections in Pakistan but recognizes that it is not possible to have a "perfect" election.

"They (Rice and Musharraf) talked about the internal situation in Pakistan. The secretary talked to President Musharraf about how he saw the situation in Pakistan, how he saw the election process and the politics playing out.

"She urged President Musharraf to conduct elections in such a way that the Pakistani people have confidence in it," US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said when asked about the meeting of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice with President Musharraf in Davos Switzerland.

McCormack, while commenting to the views of Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher which he made before a Congressional sub-committee Tuesday where he held the possibility of fraud in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, said, "Pakistan, as we know, throughout its history has had various irregularities to a greater or lesser extent in their electoral process. We don't have perfect elections. I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect election."

President Musharraf, in Davos, talked about the importance of having a secure atmosphere during the elections, so that people could participate in it and talked about the US-Pakistan efforts on counter-terrorism, he added.

"It's an important election for Pakistan. They have come through recently a very difficult period in their political history. And it is our hope that the Pakistani government can get back on that road that we had seen it on previously, one of increasing political and economic reforms and increasing political and economic freedoms," he said.

India and democracy by raj shanti on 31 Jan 2008

Does Hindiusm and Democracy go hand in hand. The democracy is become a biggest sham in India. What is the difference you have when british were ruling us and when these rogue politicians rule us under so called democracy in India. Today also few indian families are ruling over the masses and poor people are getting poorer and poorer. Look at the crime rates?? Can a lone women walk free during the night in New Delhi or any other big cities. Is there any law where the culprit and criminals are tried legally and justly and punished for their crimes. If that is the case then why only people like Sanjay Dutt is tried and punished and people like Modi, Bal Thackeray and other VHP leaders who has committed henious crime towards humanity are scot free and ruling the masses. Are the minorities safe and protected under so called democracy in India? Are our judiciary working properly with proper justice being given to the affected people?? The rich people and their sons are protected and allowed to go scot free despite of crushing people to death on the road side by their expensive cars. What type of democracy is this when the poor people are denied the basic rights to leave a good and healthy life. Lets first make our house straight by implementing basic demoractive values and their give advise to Pakistan. Are our election free and fair?? where the elections are won by the muscle and money power.

Electoral Legitimacy by ashutosh mishra on 31 Jan 2008

True Mr Srinivasan, they aren't Perfect in India too,but then they are not in the US too if we talk of absolutes. However,we in India as others elsewhere at least since Mr T N Seshan onwards conduct elections with high credibility, witness recent UP and Gujarat, not controlled as in Pakistan. They vet candidates, the army and ISI vet it,the Iranians at least declare that they are vetting candidates on basis of loyalty to Islamist principles, but those we are talking about in Pakistan are out and out vetted by corrupt oligarchs without being declared giving them a very controlled character and brings their very credibility into question.Well, sometime we too hadn't done that well in J

Free elections in Pakistan by RJ Khurana on 31 Jan 2008

How can a man who got himself elected at gunpoint and dismissing the Chief Justice of Pakistan and 60 other judges is expected to hold free and fair elections. Free and fair elections will spell his doom. He knows it and the US know it. The latter will not let his client down. Democracy be damned.
