A case of grabbing of 17 acres of an NRI has come to light in Phillaur. An impostor NRI had tried to sell the land of another NRI after preparing forged documents.
It was learnt that due to political pressure, the police were not investigating the case, and had initially even tried to hush it. But when the relatives pressurised, they booked five persons, but did not mention names of two more accused.
A case under sections 420, 467, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC was registered, but section 120 (B) (hatching conspiracy) was not added.
The land of NRI Najar Singh was being sold by his namesake, the impostor, to NRI Chandan Singh Malhi of Atta village who has also been booked.
When Charanjit Singh, relative of the real Najar Singh who has the special power of attorney for the land, came to know about the fraud, he informed the police. He said his maternal uncle Najar Singh has been living in Canada since 1972, and in 1984 he had changed his name to Sooramjit Dharamvir Singh Soomal and had never returned to India since.
The complainant said the impostor had got made a fake voter ID card and ration card made.
Others involved with him were Ajit Singh, Gian Chand, Tarsem Lal and a Jalandhar resident with surname Walia, whose complete name was not known.
