Impressive win for South Central Railway in ‘Babu’ Hockey opener

Lucknow, March 24 South Central Railway, Secunderabad defeated UP Police 9-1 in the inaugural match of the 28th All India KD Singh `Babu’ Prize Money Hockey Tournament to start their campaign in style, at Dhyanchand astro-turf stadium here on Monday.

On behalf of South Central Railway (SCR), KM Chinappa netted the first goal in the 11th minute of the play. In the 17th and 18th minute Manjur Subaiyya scored two goals through penalty corners. In the 31st minute, Amit Kumar scored a field goal to consolidate the lead further. UP Police player Shahid Khan made no mistake in utilising a penalty corner awarded to his team in the 33rd minute to bring down the margin to 4-1. However, Ajappa Swamy netted a goal just a minute later to make the half-time score 5-1 in favour of SCR.

The second-half belonged entirely to SCR. Forwards Amit, KK Bharat, Gurupreet Singh and N Ramesh scored a goal each in the 41st, 55th, 60th and 65th minute as SCR defeated UP Police 9-1.

In the second match of the day, West Central Railway, Jabalpur defeated UP Sports Hostel team by 6-0. TM Khan scored the first two goals in the 7th and 9th minute, respectively. Thereafter, TS Khan, Akram Iqbal, MT Khan scored goals as West Central Railway team triumphed by a 6-0 margin.

The tournament was inaugurated by Principal Secretary, Sports (UP) Sudhir Kumar. The tournament has been organised by Regional Sports Office, Lucknow under the auspices of Sports Department, UP.

Tuesday’s Fixtures: Corps of Signal vs West Central Railway, Jabalpur (at 2.00 pm); STC Lucknow vs SCR, Secunderabad (at 3.30 pm).
