Chaman, a temporary employee of the Trade Tax department, was on his way to Dilshad Garden in Delhi when he was killed. A crowd gathered around the area and beat up the driver and threw stones on the bus. Traffic was disrupted for close to three hours after employees from the Trade Tax department blocked roads and threw stones on vehicles passing by. The police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob.
“No official visited the spot for close to two hours. Commuters on the bus beat up the driver,” an eyewitness said. Trade Tax department employees claimed the police tried to cover-up the incident instead of taking swift action.
Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Ratan visited the spot and gave the employees assurances of swift action in the matter. “A special team will be set up to look into the matter. Action will also be taken against people who were throwing stones,” he said.
Some people have been arrested for interrogation, the police said. The bus has been impounded and the victim’s body has been sent for autopsy. The driver, however, managed to flee.
