Kapoor began his career as a romantic hero in Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai but is now doing more comedy films. The switch, he says, was not a conscious decision. “It was coincidental, not planned at all. I have done serious intense roles in Khakee and Shootout at Lokhandwala and comedy again in Kyaa Kool Hai Hum and Golmaal.” As for action roles, Kapoor says he would love to do them. “In fact, I am doing Apoorva's (Lakhia) next,” he confirms.
As we climb up the stairs of Balaji House, we can't help but notice the temple at the ground floor, and that every floor has the idol of one God at least. Kapoor's sister Ekta is known to be very religious but Kapoor believes he is “fairly religious, as any normal person”. He goes to the temple every Saturday and to Tirupathi every three to four months. “Before any film of mine releases , I pray for it to do well,” he grins.
Like his previous films, C Kkompany is once again a multi-starrer. But Kapoor is not worried that he will go unnoticed. “I have actually benefited a lot from multi-starrers. My role in Golmaal was a memorable one. Besides, you never know which film will work,” he says.
Shooting for C Kkompany was a fun experience for Kapoor. He and choreographer Rajiv fooled Celina Jaitly with a mock fight on Rajiv's partiality towards Jaitly during the shoot of the song Munde. Kapoor has an active funny bone and comedy comes naturally to him. “I have never found doing comedy difficult,” he says. "I think it is difficult to do something when you cannot relate to it. For me, Shootout was initially difficult."
However, he did find one scene in C Kkompany challenging. “I play a TV crime reporter and I had to speak in that loud, sensational way the reporters on TV do. During dubbing, Sachin (Yardi) was never satisfied and kept telling me to speak louder, with a higher bass.”
Kapoor accepts that his career has not really skyrocketed. “Progressive,” is how he describes his journey in one word. He has seen failure and admits that he does feel bad when his film doesn't do well. “I am a strong person,” he asserts. “By evening (of the day of release), I am fine. I move on.” And when his film does well? “Then too I move on,” he laughs. “But with joy in my heart.”
