Sambalpur (Orissa), March 8: In a bid to garner support of tribals, dalits and youth ahead of Lok Sabha polls due next year, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today vowed to fight for their cause and safeguard their rights.

"Though adivasis and dalits are raising their voice against exploitation, there is none to hear. Tribals, youths and dalits must fight for their rights," he said addressing a public meeting at Bamada, 110 km from here, on the second day of his four-day Orissa visit.

"I am always with you to fight for your cause. If we don't fight for our rights, no progress can be achieved," said the Congress general secretary, who embarked on a 'Discover India' journey yesterday from Orissa's poverty-hit tribal belt.

Stating that he had been fighting against backwardness in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress MP said now he found that Orissa was more backward than Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh.

Gandhi said whenever he visited Amethi, he toured villages during the night to see which place lacked electricity.

"In Orissa, I had to search which village has power supply," he said.

Rahul had been to a village having 8000 population last night but found only one college student and a lone graduate there.

There was one school upto 12th standard and another upto 8th standard in the village, he said, adding "the situation is pathetic in Orissa".

Ask the christian missionaries Mr. Raol Gandhi by n.krishna on 09 Mar 2008

Raol Gandhi a born christian should ask the christian missionaries as to which villages have electricity. These missionaries attack the poorest of the poor in India for conversion. It was Tamil Nadu long back, and then it was NE and now the states like Orissa. Congress ruled most of the time and had an interest to keep the masses illiterate and poor for votes, like in Amethi. These poor states does not have politicians like Raol Gandhi who got two billion dollars from KGB as reported by a Sweedish magazine

Who's responsible for this? by sam on 09 Mar 2008

Mr. Gandhi, Who is responsible for this? Your family has to take responsibility. Your family has a tradition of monarchy in keeping the nation poor so that when you guys go to ask for the votes, you can claim that you will provide chapatis and dal! Today's Indian economy is lighted by Narasima Rao. Unfortunately who had to go to jail for the corruption. On what moral and ethical ground your family criticizes about the India's poverty and infrastructure. Just have a look at the length of time your family was ruling India since we got Independence! It is high time that you guys to introspect yourself!
