India 100 yrs ahead of Australia, Hayden told

New Delhi, November 15: Matthew Hayden's comment about India being a "third world" country came in for a scathing attack from former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram who said the Australians have a habit of bad-mouthing their opponents whenever they lose.

Akram said the Aussies were "sore losers" and that Hayden should have known that India was now hundred years ahead of Australia "which is no more than a village".

"The thing about the Aussies is that they are sore losers. They get personal when they get beaten. It is all a matter of sour grapes and after going home, they've started calling India a third-world country", said Akram.

"India is a superpower now; it is a hundred years ahead of Australia, which is no more than a village, as compared to India. You don't blame sightscreens for poor over rates. Even Allan Border was critical of Australian tactics on the pitch," Akram said.

Akram's stinging reaction came a day after the BCCI reacted strongly to Hayden's remark, saying such a comment about India was totally uncalled for from the Australian opener.

Back home after the 2-0 series defeat, Hayden spoke about, what he perceived, poor ground conditions and inordinate delays during the matches "that happen in Third World countries".

"This was a completely uncalled for remark by him. A player of his stature should not have made the comment," BCCI's Finance Committee Chairman Rajiv Shukla had said on Friday.

"If slow-over rate is your habit, why blame India for that and call India third world? We are a very prestigious nation and it was not a nice comment by him," Shukla said.

Hayden made a list of things which he felt resulted in Australia's slow over-rates in the series against India. He alleged the Indian batsmen were reluctant to "face up" quickly enough and there was constant movement around sightscreens.

"They (opposition batsmen) are very difficult to get to face up," Hayden said. "Often we find ourselves with hands on hips waiting for someone to either face up or someone in the sightboard to move away; all the little frustrations that happen in Third World countries and the heat as well," he added.

India has a population of about a billion which is 50 times larger than the aussies or australia is not even population of goa the number of people born in a year.its senseless to compare two countries as most of the people in india depend on agriculture. But hold on by 2050 we will surprass even us in size of economy.the wealth aussies have all been robed from native australians.originally they are looters and criminals who where sent to australia. No wonder they posess such an attitude.

Double standard talks of Australians by Pritesh Mistry on 18 Nov 2008

Earlier when Harbhajan was given clean chit over the racist comment issue Ponting told that BCCI is showing their power they have in cricket world. Now Hayden is calling India a third world. It is wonderful to know that Aussies have started giving excuses for their failures.

Oz- dont show your true color by G.T.Baliga on 18 Nov 2008

Aussie players dont know how to digest a defeat.do not have sportman spirit.ICC should ban all type of sledging and apply a common code of conduct. To improve the quality of the game, ICC should have more umpires and match refrees from the sub-continent.Most of the senior players are too rude on and off the pitch.recent case of symond, gilchrist remarks and now Heydon. Why dont you digest the defeat rather than showing your true color to the whole world. world knows your actual root.

The one who does not know how to dance blames the floor by Bharat on 18 Nov 2008

Dear Hayden and Aussies, in Hindi there is a proverb 'Nach na awe angan tedi', means the one who does not know to dance blames the floor as not symetrical, it is the same case with you. Wasim's reaction was great. Being our neighbour, Wasim knows much better about us than the disrespectful Hayden. Learn from some of your colleagues who are much greater than you in the sports as well as well aware of India Like Steve Waugh.

India is not a superpower but is a developing country for sure by Audrey on 18 Nov 2008

Noone has called India superpower . As far as some TYPICAL AUSSIE COMMENTS which some of you have written with Indian names shows your snobbish attitude that everyother country is beneath you or inferior to you while majoirity of the aussies live in housing trusts.Indians should stop commenting against India.

India is a developing country by RKrishanan on 18 Nov 2008

Does India and Africa have the same economic and other issues. Afrcia depends on UN and other volutary organistions for its foodsupply, cleanwater and all other basic needs.ARE YOU ALL PEOPLE LIVING INDIA SURVIVING ON FOOD SUPPLIES FROM UN??? Is India in the same situation. No . The issues which some of you hve brought out are found in other developing countries too as China. They are not as bad as in Africa. Therefore India is not a third world country. Stop acting like sadists martrys We are not bad as we in the 40's and 50's when we are given the name of a third world.Stop criticising India.

India will be never a developed country by Raj Thackrey on 17 Nov 2008

How can india will ever be a developed country, when there are hand full of states supporting the budget of the entire 28 states. For example the sole bread earners in india are the maharashtrians and the rest are just beggers surviving on the bits thrown at them by maharashtra. If maharashtra is out of india its already a developed country.

Big Head by Lalit on 18 Nov 2008

If you guys dont stop Raj T you will be the ones begging. dont forget it is the outsiders who make your state what it is

India does have the signs of becoming a developed signs though it will take time to reach there by audrey on 18 Nov 2008

Every other aussie lives on hand to mouth existence or some of them have charity organisations supporting them . If everything looks spick and span in your country ,it is because the population is manageable unlike India's This comment in the name of raj is made by a typical arrogant aussie.

Whom are we fooling by Rajiv Bugga on 17 Nov 2008

Someone once said "One important thing is you should not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool. Half the people posting here have never seen the world outside and claim to be 100 years ahead of Australia, even if you look at simple human rights issues, india is still a third world country and there is nothing wrong in admitting it. And those who think india is 100 years ahead probably should go and see outside world.

You are fooling none other than yourself by samair on 18 Nov 2008

I think you need to think outside the square. You are calling India a third world, when it isn't. The issues which you have brought out are problems being faced by all developing countries. Are getting your food supply, clean water from voluntary organisations. That is third world.

wake up guys......wake up! by Abdurehman siddique on 17 Nov 2008

hello...Aussie... what made you to tell india as "third world" wake up guys...we can beat in your home ground also... so, pls don't come to play ipl in india,if it is a third world...and please try to learn good cricket with Indians...our country has most number of engineers and doctors in the world.... our land culturally conquered whole world for centuries...

re by Mark on 18 Nov 2008

haha, India gives them out in weeties packets that is why you have all them engineers and Docs,

What's big deal? by Bhanvarlal Sharma on 17 Nov 2008

The term Third World was relevant during the Cold war era when the industrialized world was divided between the first and the second and people, in ignorance still use the term. However, Indians do not have to overreact to the comment as India still a poor country with some of the serious quality of life issues. We have one third of World's poor population that is deprived of food, water, medicine, sanitation, and education. Having some of the big business houses and a nuclear bomb does not make India a super power. And why we have over enthusiasts about becoming super power, when half of our population is struggling to service. The people who keep shouting about India as superpower are rude and insensitive to the poors of India because they just want to ignore the agony and struggle of a large population

Hayden should be banned for his insulting words. by A Bannerjee on 17 Nov 2008

Bury your faces in the sand Indians as you have been called third world people and you have sadly accepted it? Is India like Africa?? ie acute shortage of food, water supply etc. Wake up sleepy heads we have actually reached the moon. Did you realise that?

Reacing the moon!!! by Abdur Rehman on 17 Nov 2008

India still needs food and education for its billion people rather then nuclear weapons and space shuttles, 24hrs electrity and water is still considered a luxury in india. India should focus on these basic problems first before sending space ships on moon.

India is not third world anymore by kunal on 17 Nov 2008

am not sure which era some of you belong to. Times have changed . India has progressed and improved although not completely . Most important factors which pulls down India from being a complete developed country is population explosion and corrupt politicans. But India cannot be called a 3 rd world in anyway It is definitely a developing country. The country which can be called third world in real sense is Africa. What is the difference between some of you and hyden??

confused Hayden by Satya Chatterjee on 17 Nov 2008

If India is third world then what should be the status of Africa. India is a developing country and will be a key player in world politics. Hayden is an excellent cook and a player but he is not an expert on international issues. He enjoys a lavish lifestyle in India at the expense of BCCI and should be grateful about that. He should never deliver lectures on issues that he does not understand. Cricketers outside sub-continental block depend on India for a living and so is Hayden.

Punch Hit Back Hayden by Nikhil on 17 Nov 2008

I realy like Akram came up with his view and shown love towards india and he is great cricketer his words count very well and he has to now show important if his clever view in international cricket.

India the great. by Indian on 17 Nov 2008

Why do we keep shouting this. Are we so affetcted by inferiority compex. Why Australians are not busy denying that their country is not behind us by 100 years. We willb equal when we give up our inferiority complex.

re by tilak on 17 Nov 2008

They would be using the worst language if they knew about this website. Why dont you read their comments on wwos.com.au on similar topics related to Indians and cricket . I bet you will sing a different tune then.

India - a developing Country!! by lsundar on 17 Nov 2008

I do not think that we should react so angrily to Hayden's views. He may have done it as a matter of insulting Indiaand putting it on a back foot. . He is not Ok in that. But we hsould also introspect and realise what we are. We may be growing , may become a super power but the ground reality stays. We have no clean drinking water, no full time power ,no proper sanitation, no proper roards, horrible civic sense, and we can add on many more. This is not to be discouraging but we need to improve a lot before we are termed a developed country which may be many decades away. In the mean time we need get offended if we are termed as still developing(euphuism for third world country), and poor. we should strive to better the lot of all our countrymen as fast as possible instead of only talking about it. Jai Hind.

Hayden's comments by burt lawrence on 17 Nov 2008

The Indian team outbowled, out batted and outshone the Aussies. Hayden should know this better than anyone, and if he does not then it proves that he is "as thick as a brick" passed his prime/bad sport and above all ignorant to boot. Now Mick Clarke and Bret Lee are the kind of players who make us proud to be Australian.Burt. Pialba.Qld.Aust

Hayden's Comment contd. by Basu Bose on 17 Nov 2008

the talents of the new immigrants supporting your country. Go back to basics and learn something from other legendary cricketers including some Australians. Ponting's men have already disgraced cricket when India visited Australia and, yet overly keen to play IPL for bucks they will never see in their own backyard. Grow up kid and visit your mother country England to pick up some right attitudes

Hayden by Harish on 17 Nov 2008

Hyden is doen a great msitake by calling names to India. He is not welcome to India anymore .
