New Delhi, November 15: Matthew Hayden's comment about India being a "third world" country came in for a scathing attack from former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram who said the Australians have a habit of bad-mouthing their opponents whenever they lose.

Akram said the Aussies were "sore losers" and that Hayden should have known that India was now hundred years ahead of Australia "which is no more than a village".

"The thing about the Aussies is that they are sore losers. They get personal when they get beaten. It is all a matter of sour grapes and after going home, they've started calling India a third-world country", said Akram.

"India is a superpower now; it is a hundred years ahead of Australia, which is no more than a village, as compared to India. You don't blame sightscreens for poor over rates. Even Allan Border was critical of Australian tactics on the pitch," Akram said.

Akram's stinging reaction came a day after the BCCI reacted strongly to Hayden's remark, saying such a comment about India was totally uncalled for from the Australian opener.

Back home after the 2-0 series defeat, Hayden spoke about, what he perceived, poor ground conditions and inordinate delays during the matches "that happen in Third World countries".

"This was a completely uncalled for remark by him. A player of his stature should not have made the comment," BCCI's Finance Committee Chairman Rajiv Shukla had said on Friday.

"If slow-over rate is your habit, why blame India for that and call India third world? We are a very prestigious nation and it was not a nice comment by him," Shukla said.

Hayden made a list of things which he felt resulted in Australia's slow over-rates in the series against India. He alleged the Indian batsmen were reluctant to "face up" quickly enough and there was constant movement around sightscreens.

"They (opposition batsmen) are very difficult to get to face up," Hayden said. "Often we find ourselves with hands on hips waiting for someone to either face up or someone in the sightboard to move away; all the little frustrations that happen in Third World countries and the heat as well," he added.

INDIA 100 YEARS AHEAD by ANAND on 16 Nov 2008

Mr. Hayden's arguement does not hold any water since Indians had to face the same problem when they were bowling.

Akram's Remarks by Vengrai P. Sarathy on 16 Nov 2008

It was really high-minded of Akram to have taken up cudgels on behalf of India.Let us not tell Australia to "Cry baby, cry". Let them marinate in their own bile. Vengrai Psarathy

Re Haydenss' comments. by Rajaram Rao on 16 Nov 2008

It is rather amazing such a remark, such as:India being a "Third World" country, apart from being totally out of place and shows his contempt for people, supposedly not up to his standards what ever they may be. He seems to forget very plainly put, Australia up until the late 19/early 20th century was a penal colony for the British Empire. I wonder how he would feel if he were called a scion of criminals!!! I do not beleive, any Indian no matter how rude or impolite, ever deigned to call him or any of his team mates for that matter this epithet. He also seems to forget, Cricket has always been a game of GENTLEMEN, obviously he does not seem to belong in that category.

Hayden's remarks by Sundar on 16 Nov 2008

Quoted from The Age, in Melbourne - article by Tim Lane:"Australia has long played hard cricket. The history of this is something of which I became more aware recently as I read the autobiography of the legendary English umpire, Frank Chester.Described by Sir Donald Bradman as the greatest umpire under whom he played, Chester stood in Ashes Tests from 1926 to 1953 and saw many Australian teams. He wrote: "The certainty is that the Australians are the greatest fighting cricketing force in the world. They will not concede a single trick without a struggle and are never down until they are out. The essential thing they should guard against is that they do not sacrifice the spirit of the game for the result. There were times in my experience when they were dangerously close to it."That was published in 1956. The rubicon was crossed a long time ago!

India by monica on 16 Nov 2008

Casteism and racism are two sides of the same coin--both can be termed as social evils which divide the society. If casteism is being prctised by uneducated masses of India, there is racism all over Australia on the streets, schools and public places. Indians in australia pretend to be equals .

Hayden by naresh on 16 Nov 2008

Hayden has also been slammed by the UK press who have called him a redneck meaning a retard.

Wasim Akram has spoken the truth by monica on 16 Nov 2008

Those who dont know what India is and are snooty and snobbish as they are living as a second class citizen in some phoren land, will not accept this. Also to warn you guys, do not enter into any verbal duet with an aussie becos they will come up with a barrage of choicest abuses as they are experts at that. The reason for them being experts in that arena, is their rough and violent upbringing which makes them aggressive and hostile. They are basically loners and if they happen to be in a a relationship , it is a very abusive one. Verbal abuse is a kind of physical abuse.

Third world for sure by Truth on 16 Nov 2008

Indian is a third world country. You can thank 40 years of Congress party rule for that and those numbskulls named Gandhi's

Under my saintly guidance India is quickly becoming first world also as I spread the love of Godd and blessing of Joosus Marry and Holly Ghost in this third world country of unbelieving darkies. Australians and other first world country should give lots of charity for this work in third world India so that Godd can bless India and harvest all the paganistic souls and plant one billion churches. Amen Hallu Leliya.

cricket by raj on 15 Nov 2008

who is waseem to say this, he forgot what he done in the past, and abut the stopage in match dont feel that there is so much of stopage in between the match is only because of bcci only making money from the matches played rather than improving the condition of ground and the spectator who watch the match ultimately who faces the problem the spectator who comes to watch the matches they dont even think of that only want to make money and please akram dont interfare in our matter see ur team what they are doing we dont need ur support for this

Third World India by Parmeshwar Coomar on 15 Nov 2008

I do not know what exactly third world means but India does need to have sanitation and water for all; job opportunities for its vast millions, religious tolerance that does not spill into violence over minority communities, safe roads and cities for its citizens, medical care for all regardless of wealth status, public schools that work, social justice and equality and above all a political system that can really call itself a democracy not run by corrupt politicians. What good does name calling do when the truth is we have none of these. Pride is good false pride is dishonesty. None of this is in short supply in India.

Hype and scratch the surace to know the truth by Chandra on 15 Nov 2008

Everytime I drive around Bangalore roads I feel the same. Everytime i return from abroad and I see the kind of political leadership we Indians get, I have to concur with Hayden. We get carried away by all hypes and all wrong data. Indians deserve better, we sure shoud not be happy with what is going on in this country. I am not a sympathizer of Australians. To me they are uncultured and too arrogant.

Haydon by Bharat Kumar on 15 Nov 2008

At a point in history when convicts were being sent down under,India was the richest country in the world and was systematically being looted by the governments of those days. Later on after leaving behind a very poor country, they decide to call it the third world. In a matter of time, India will be back to its original superpower status and perhaps continue to give jobs to people from the so called rich countries (eg IPL has employed the likes of Hayden).

Ignore the Convict by MS on 15 Nov 2008

Do not take seriously the crybaby remarks of Hayden who is a convict or descendant of that kind from UK
