New Delhi, January 9: Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Beijing, China said the two countries needed to project a ‘positive posture’ in their relationship which had ‘international dimension’ and bearing on world peace and stability.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yan said his country wanted Singh's maiden visit to be successful and expressed confidence that it will give a ‘push to the strategic and cooperative partnership’ between the two countries to a ‘new level’.

Singh, who will undertake a three-day visit to China from Sunday, will have wide-ranging talks with his counterpart Wen Jiabao and meet President Hu Jintao covering political, economic and strategic relationship.

"China-India relations assume international dimension and whenever there is interaction between the two countries, the world watches closely," Zhang said.

"We have to project a positive posture to the outside world," he said, adding the two countries needed to demonstrate that they are ‘committed to cooperate and work together for the betterment of the two countries and for peace and stability of the region and the world’.

China's posture towards India by hemant shah on 10 Jan 2008

First and formost, China needs to project a positive posture towards India. To do this it has to agree on a border solution. Wtihout which India should not cooperate with China in any field. So far everything China has done like supplying weapons, technology to Pak., circling India from all around, etc. show no indication of a positive posture at all.

China and India by Dr. g.s.shankar on 10 Jan 2008

We made the mistake of trusting Chinese once. Caution is the mantra dealing with Chinese. There is a saying pay attention not to what Chinese say but what they do not say. Of course Karatians would love to have a blind date with the Dragon. But we have to remember the proverb those who got their tongue burnt with hot milk, may tend to phoo phoo even butter-milk.

Learn from China by Uttiya Basu on 10 Jan 2008

I wonder how many of these commentators have visited China. The fact is clear for everyone to see in China. The Chinese are more developed, their citizens enjoy a better lifestyle and people are satisfied on the whole with their lives. Work gets done in China. In India, we abuse our freedom and democratic rights. I have lived in India for 24 years and in China for five years and I can teel for a fact that we have many lessons to learn from a "Communist" country

Manmohansingh's visit to China by Kris on 10 Jan 2008

I hope that Mr. Singh does not get bowled over by such lofty statements. For once, I hope, that he asserts himself and the position of India on border positions, displeasure on the proliferation of missile, and nuclear technologies to rogue Nations. I would even say that he must stir the pot of Sino-Taiwanese relationships. Why not? They constantly sock it to us. When do we see some gutsy, assertive and displomatically aggressive Indian politicians?

Tiger by Mahen on 10 Jan 2008

The prime ministers of China and India can also establish a "positive posture" to the rest of the world community if they discuss about the uncontrolled illegal trade and trafficking of wildlife parts and products and how they can cooperate to mitigate threats to tigers and many other wildlife species in the wild in India and many other countries. This will be an exemplary outlook from them to the rest of the world leaders demonstrating their equal concern about the environmental health and biodiversity conservation together with their drive for national economic growth. These world leaders can make the difference in saving endangered species like tiger, the national symbol of India and it will be their great contribution to the humanity.

Chinese always talk nicely but give nothing. Indian politicians and bureaucrats should be weary of these high sounding words by S.Balakrishnan on 09 Jan 2008

Project positive image according to Chinese means that India accept its subordination to Chinese demands and overlordship of Asia. Chinese have not changed a bit either internally or externally and do not care for public opinion. Their committment to Tibetan Autonomy is non existant and they go on demanding territories inside India. India should stand firm on its principles and should not yield. Sure we want friendship with the Chinese people but that should be based on democratically elected representatives such as those in Taiwan. Chinese gunta elected by one party system is not representative of the Chinese people or their will. The fact that the people have no power and do not revolt (their revolt in Tienamen Square was put down) does not mean that they are non existant. India can negotiate with these gunta on a short term basis but should remain firm on its principled stands and not yield to their bullying and cajoling with smooth statements. We have seen them before and fooled once. Just like President Bush tried to say earlier "Fool me once you are an idiot and Fool me twice then I am the idiot".
