India, China to cooperate over Himalayan glaciers: Jairam

Glaciers

London India and China are in talks to monitor the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas, a border region crucial to both countries' water supplies, Minister for Environment Jairam Ramesh has said.

"We are talking to the Chinese about monitoring the Himalayan glaciers," Ramesh told the 'Financial Times'.

However, he said India would not allow Chinese scientists "to climb all over India's glaciers" but wanted a collaborative research programme.

He said as part of a scientific investigation into the health of what are called the 'Water Towers of Asia', academic research bodies on both sides of the mountain range would share information.

He said New Delhi is open to dialogue on water resources with Beijing, adding the two countries shared the concerns.

Ramesh is visiting China this month to strike a deal with Beijing ahead of the Copenhagen talks on climate change in December.

He said India and China could be a "countervailing power" in resisting legally binding caps on greenhouse emissions that threaten to slow the progress of the two fastest growing economies.

The Himalayan region and the Tibet plateau are strategically sensitive for the two countries.

Seven of the world's greatest rivers, including the Ganges and the Yangtze, are fed by glaciers, and supply water to about 40 per cent of the world's population.

'The Financial Times' report said the Indian government has disputed the "doomsday predictions" linking melting of Himalayan glaciers to climate change, saying there is no evidence to support that glaciers will disappear within 40 years.

"It's a highly emotive issue but one has to be a little careful before we write the epitaph of the Himalayan glaciers," Ramesh said.

Indian government has requested that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the department of science and technology undertake extensive glacial surveys across the eastern and western Himalayas to assess their condition.

Consider more gone to the Chinese side by SCV on 03 Aug 2009

To me that means one thing and only one, what ever is left of Himalyas as ours, would soon be reduced in size further. These stupid Congressis only know how to screw all up and still keep grinning. They are a special breed, unfortunate for us.

You are right, SCV by Sumangal Pande on 04 Aug 2009

That's it if anything. We must not let Congress deal for us for anything on an international forum for they do not care for our country but the others first, hard to believe, but it has been the history and would continue undoubtedly in future. Send our Jain Marwadis instead.

Are we Fools to go to China by Narendra on 03 Aug 2009

China by nature is a hypocritic country. Why then the government is thinking of collaborating with china in climate change exercise? China is doing all possible things to strategically place itself in a stronger position. By helping Srilanka, its got a naval base, already made permanent roads to Himalayas can move in very easily, telling everybody that arunachal is their part, sending all ill manufactured goods to India, making in-roads through the communist, helping pakistan always to create voilence in India, already captured Tibet and part of manas sarovar lake and so many other things. Let there be complete ban on Chinese goods and creating awareness about the ill intentions of china.

Excuse me, that is chinese land, all our water by chinese on 03 Aug 2009

All is all part of south Tibet which is a part of china. And all water belongs to us. No water for Indians. Hehe

Global Problem by vidrohi on 03 Aug 2009

Dear Chinese, The discussion is about the Glaciers some which flow into Indian side and some which flow from your side. Nobody except you are contesting that fact. Please rise above the childishness and read a little more especially wiorld geography before making such comments. The last he he was when each of us were laughing at your ignorance. By the way unless countries start saving the Himalayas together it would be gone, so please keep your silly jokes and talk seriously on a serious matter.Indian

India-China Co-operation over Himalayan Glaciers by Maj Gen DK Sen,AVSM(Retd) on 03 Aug 2009

I think Jairam Ramesh has been unwise in offering to invite the Chinese in a joint venture to reconnoiter our Himalayan glaciers. The Chinese are no friends of India. It will merely give them an opportunity to map our Northern borders with great accuracy which will give them a great advantage when they next decide to invade India and bite off yet another chunk of our territory.

India-China co-op. by somesh ponmani on 03 Aug 2009

I entirely agree. The Chinese in cahouts with Pakistan will do anything to destabilise India. At present, India is the only competitor on the industrial field for China. Therefore, it is in China's advantage that India is made to engage with Pakistan year-round thereby neglecting India's industrial progress. If India is wise, we should keep only a nodding acquaintance with China. The old idiom 'India-China Bhai Bhai' is at best dead and buried.

The purpose and intention of Jairam Ramesh will be to assess the amount he and congress can get by selling off India to China. After all there will be need of manyfold money in the 2014 elections.Jai ho Jaichand ki.
