Washington US Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the powerful Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said that India and Pakistan are engaged in "old fashioned" confrontation.

Kerry, who recently visited India, Pakistan and Afghanistan is expected to play a key role in shaping the foreign policy of the new administration made this observation on the floor of the Senate.

He made these remarks during the Senate debate related to the confirmation of Hillary Clinton as the Secretary of State to the US President Barack Obama.

"India and Pakistan are still engaged in literally old fashioned, mostly cold war... confrontation," Kerry said.

"In fact, both sides know that the concept of war would be absurd," said the powerful Senator from Massachusetts.

"I was recently in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India," said Kerry, who was the Democratic Party Presidential nominee in 2004 and lost to George W Bush in his second term.

Kerry said the real threat to both the countries - India and Pakistan - comes internally from people who believe in religious extremism.

US Senator Kerry's Comments by Shekhar Bhaiya on 22 Jan 2009

I am so happy to see these brave and intelligent comments by my fellow brothers and sisters from my motherland India. Sri Bhagvat Gita says, "War is a necessary tool to fight Evils." Evils reside in Taliban Pakistan. Modern political doctrines support war to eliminate evils. US war on terror is a perfect example. Russian battle with Georgia is yet another good example of going to war to secure your own safety. So, my brothers and sisters be strong, be smart, plan well, and destroy the evil.

Strategy of US by sk on 22 Jan 2009

What does US do: they arm both Pak and India, sales billions worth to, that is what they want now to escape from their current financial trouble

World Police by sk on 22 Jan 2009

Kerry, after 9/11, was US complaining of terror of old fashion? As per him for US it was right, for India it was wrong. Dont cheat world, dont try to become old police

No intervening in Indian Affairs by krishna on 22 Jan 2009

India should'nt let the west intervene in its geo-polical issues.US should be busy business with its own internal affairs.

War with Pakistan by John Thomas on 22 Jan 2009

Mr. John Kerry, Of course, all Indians know very well that war is 'absurd'. If Pakistan is not taking serious/convincing actions against the people who planned and executed the terrorist attack in Mumbai on 26/11/2008, take it granted Mr. Kerry, India won't delcare war with Pak but will definitely destroy/dismantle the terrorist camps in Pakistan. If US or any other in the world was in place of India, what action they would have taken, please advise Mr. Kerry. Indians expect US

Terrorism from Pakistan and Indian Response by John Thomas on 22 Jan 2009

Mr. Kerry, no one in India or in the world want 'war' with any country, especially Indians are very peace loving people. But if our neighbouring counry, Pakistan, is provoking India, like the terrorist attack in Mumbai on 26/11/2008, what can India do? Let no one in the world, including US, don't test the patience of India. Indian Government is anxiously waiting/ooking for actions against people who planned and executed the attack in Mumbai; of course, there is no time-frame for this waiting. India is also earnestly looking for action by the new US President, Mr. Barack Obama, against terrorist camps in Pakistan. Believe it or not Mr. Kerry, if serious and convincing actions are not being taken by Pak authorities, India won't declare war against Pak, but will definitely destroy/dismantle the terrorist camps in Pakistan. India knows very well war is 'absurd', if there is no other option left, what India can do, can you please advise Mr. Kerry.

Who is Kerry? by Nitin on 22 Jan 2009

Why does Indian media cover these kind of news? Who is Kerry? Nobody has asked this loser for his comment. Indian government would rather take a Pakistani minister's comment seriously than this guy's comment.

war by GANAPATI KAMAT on 22 Jan 2009

WAR IS ALWAYS AGAINST THE HUMANITY. HISTORY HAS SHOWN US WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH WAR. THERE SHOULD BE PEACE IN THE WORLD.

impotent GOI by prakash on 22 Jan 2009

Dear Kerry,Dont worry ! Even if you and all Hindusthanis say to do so, the impotent Congis would not dare to decide to go to war!!!And so far as majority Hindus are concerned , most of them have got a very very strong DOSE of sleeping pills

India Pak war a necessity by oldindian on 22 Jan 2009

The only concern with respect to Pak, is with all the confusion, and liberation war going on in its NW region (that is what pak calls kashmir violence, why not we do it), it is not clear how far is pak away from collapse as a state. And india while it recognizes the aspiration for independence of NW people of pakistan, cannot watch until the madmen of taliban/al qaeda cause mayhem at its current border with pakistan. It is just that current incumbent in india is too secular to do anything. As part of its "All options" it choses to do nothing on this issue as on any other issues. So change of guard in india is reason for us to expect fundamentalist war. Again nonsense from Kerry about religious extermism is hopefully limited to pakistan.

HOW ABSURD by SANJAY on 22 Jan 2009

Gurudev. Who the hell is this fellow KERRY? hASNT HE LEARNT HIS LESSONS YET. It is a matter of the pride of millions of Indians. Who is Kerry to teach us what to do or what not to do. He is better advised to tel Pakistan to demolish the terror web created by the ISI and the likes. Pak Govt seems to be a mute spectator. Let it be known to the likes of KERRY that we shall fight to defeat the nefarious designs of these terrorists

MISERY by s thulasidharan on 22 Jan 2009

The killings being planned and executed by the Pakistanis is even more absurd as there is no safe place for the indians to breath in India. Atleast the war will put an end to this sufferings by teaching these criminals a lesson and bring peace to the nation.

Look who is talking.. by Ajay on 22 Jan 2009

So learned is this Kerry fellow. I wonder what happened to his intelligence when US went to war with Iraq. Wasn't that war absurd?
