New Delhi Celebrated French writer Dominique Lapierre has said that India and Pakistan are "children of the same mother" and would settle their problems between them peacefully and fulfil Mahatma Gandhi's dreams.

"Bonds of history and culture will prove stronger. India and Pakistan are children of the same mother and will ultimately come together," the French writer said at the launch of the latest edition of his book "Freedom at Midnight" at the French embassy here last night on 61'st anniversary of Mahatama's martyrdom.

"Hopefully in our life time," was the author's response when asked when the two countries will settle their problems.

The author with his American collaborator Larry Collins had produced the bestseller on the story of India's freedom struggle in its closing years.

Asked for his comments on the Mumbai terror strikes, Lapierre, who has dealt with the theme of terrorism in his books such as "O Jerusalem", said that terror is not a new phenomenon.

"It has always been there throughout history. The challenge is to calm it down and I am sure time will throw up great men like Gandhi and Nelson Mandela (South African anti-apartheid leader) to meet the challenge," he said.

Earlier, Lapierre narrated his experiences during the research for "Freedom at Midnight" recalling his meeting with India's last viceroy Lord Mountbatten and Gopal Godse, brother of Nathuram Godse, who assassinated the father of the nation.

He also talked about his meeting with Muhammed Ali Jinnah's doctor who showed him the chest X ray of the architect of Pakistan, indicating that the Muslim League leader's terminal TB allowed him "only six more months of life."

Informed of this revelation, Lord Mountbatten had exclaimed to Lapierre "Oh, my dear Lord, had I only known this, I would have delayed partition and there could have been only one nation and not India and Pakistan".

Commenting on Mountbatten's remarks, Lapierre said "That is the irony, how the entire course of history has changed."

The latest edition of the book "Freedom at Midnight" has been brought out by the Vikas Publishing House with the supplement of a booklet that has the author's account of the long research on the book which first hit the stands in 1975.

India, Pak will ultimately come together: Lapierre by Suresh Rao on 03 Feb 2009

Fool's paradise by Hero Vaz on 03 Feb 2009

Lapierre is living in a fool's paradise.

Lapierre's dream by The All Knowing on 01 Feb 2009

I do not wish to have India and Pakistan become one nation. Let them be separate, but living in peace with each other. While these two nations are trying to kill each other, the rest of the world is going on their own way to prosperity. How different would things have been if these two settled their quarrels and worked for the well being of their peoples! If only that would happen!

How do we accept Pak, plan now by Surekha on 01 Feb 2009

It's a writing on the wall. Pak will limp back to mother India very very soon. I do not fully agree with the above observations, but as I say again-Pak has no option but to fall out of the bad influence (China) / buri sangat/ bure neta etc, and admit it went wrong right from the beginning. Just the matter of time, I would say.

Dominique Lapierre by Dr. Paras Deo on 31 Jan 2009

Please, Monsiuer Lapierre, Let Pakistan be Pakistan and not a "child " of my Mother India. Let the Pakistanis understand things like ex-PM Vajpayee said, " India does not want an inch of Pakistani territory" and let them understand that their mother's womb is Islam and India's mother's womb is secular. Indians have never waged a war in the name of Islam. The Pakistanis are in the middle of one with only one victim viz. INDIA. Please, Monsieur educate yourself.

Dominique Lapierre by Dr. Paras Deo on 31 Jan 2009

Dominique Lapierre , a French, had idea what he was talking about. India and Pakistan are definitely NOT children of the same mother but DISTANTED NEIGHBOURS JOINED BY A COMMON BORDER…nothing more than that. These Ethnic Europeans have this habit of proclaiming things about us without comprehending the crux of the matter. Being romantic about some things does not qualify Dominique Lapierre into making "Intelligent" remarks. It is high time we stopped regarding foreign authors (about India) with awe. They are mostly hogwash in print. I meet these type of people everyday.

Pakistan by Raj on 31 Jan 2009

There is nothing 'common'here. They are the descendents of the most barbaric central asian tribes. We are probably the most peaceful people in the world. They think they ruled us for 1000 years(which is utterly false)and would do so again(by making us bleed by 1000/ cuts). Both societies are incompatible hence it is better to have no ties with them. Some journalists and businessmen are trying to patch up without least knowledge of history. In a civilized world, you can't live with a neighbour with a mind set based on treachery and deceipt.

Sigh ,if only... by bharatvanshi on 31 Jan 2009

I wish I could believe the author's prediction. Unfortunately, while India and Pakistan are indeed sons of the same mother, Pakistan has long disowned that common mother, and looks to Islam as a mother ( really, father). The whole problem is that Pakistanis do not not see themselves as Indians who converted to Islam, rather they see themselves as Muslims who converted and conquered India. It would be naive to imagine that bonds of history and culture will overcome bonds of religion where Islam is involved. Remember, Pakistanis have always sought to ignore and do away with the common bonds:Common language? Pakistanis don't like to think they speak HindiCommon cuisine? Pakistanis like to think they have a unique 'Mughal' cuisineCommon history? More like us the invaders vs them the infidelsCommon clothes? Hardly, with 'Muslim' style kurtas, topis etcThose Muslims who see India as a common mother are the peaceful Indian muslims. Pakistan was made for those other muslims

Inshallah by Rajan Sharma on 31 Jan 2009

Dominique must be highly optimistic person. But dreams do come true. Question is -- are we willing to join? And what's the need to join? I prefer sorting out the problems and live like good neighbours and nothing more. But if we achieve this on blood shed that Pakistan has been causing us, I would prefer to stay away from Pakistan, no ties, no relations.

Nothing common by nuisance on 01 Feb 2009

Pakistan and India does not have the same mother. Pakistan was conceived by the British for their own benefit. After this immaculate conception, the prodigy attained and sustained sustained by triple A credit rating - Allah, Army and America. The world has come to see the frankenstein now. Pakistan has nothing to do with Bharatha Matha. If possible Lapierre should try to merge it with France. Indians do not want them even close (the stench is unbearable).
