New Delhi, November 28: At least 170 crore man days of work are proposed to be created in the 11th Plan, Government told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as it projected an ‘India shining’ image of the UPA.

A day after UN Development Programme (UNDP) portrayed a dismal picture of India's development index, Minister of State for Planning M V Rajasekharan said the government statistics on Millennium Development Goal showed an optimistic picture.

"The figures are revealing. It is not shining of the NDA government but shining of the UPA government," he said in reply to questions.

Acknowledging that poverty exists in rural parts of the country, he said the government had launched a number of schemes to target poorest of the poor and these were bearing results.

He listed these as Bharat Nirman, the government's ‘flagship programme’, and National Rural Employment Scheme.

As many as 116 crore mandays have been created so far, Rajasekharan said, adding the government was targeting to create 170 crore mandays in the 11th Plan.

On UNDP's observations, he said its parameters were different than those of Millennium Development Goal targets, which the government had ‘internalised’.
