Washington The Obama Administration believes that India is an important and significant actor on the international stage and it would like New Delhi to play a greater role at the regional and global level. "We believe India is an important and significant actor on the international stage," National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said. National Security Council is the inter-agency coordination body of the White House. It is headed by General (rtd) James Jones, who was recently in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In the coming months there would be more frequent interaction between Jones and his Indian counterpart M K Narayanan, said Hammer who was also in India along with Jones. Hammer said Jones and Narayanan have been in constant consultations in major issues with each other.

Observing that the Obama Administration is keen in developing a deeper partnership with India, he said the United States believes that India is very important in terms of the work that they can do in terms of challenges on a broad range of issues regional security issues, economic and trade issues as well as dealing with concerns regarding climate change, poverty alleviation, education and health care. "So the visit (of General Jones) was part of the ongoing effort of the Obama Administration to deepen our ties we have - the Secretary (of State Hillary) Clinton's visit India in not too distant future and then of course Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh is invited to the White House in the Fall," he said.

On Afghanistan, he said the United States would want to see not only India, but also rest of the international community engages the way it promotes not only security of Afghanistan but also pushes forward the economic development, reconstruction as well as strengthening good governance and rule of law. "So there is a role that the international community can play to create better situation in Afghanistan and that is really our ultimate objective," he said. Hammer appreciated the positive role of India in development of Afghanistan, post-Taliban.

Words need to be translated in action by Vivek on 02 Jul 2009

If India is significant actor, why it is not permananent member of UN with veto power? Saying India is great and even greater is not good enough. Words need to be translated into actions now. WIth billion plus population, largest democracy, belieft in co-existence in all has not been good enough to have a say for India in IMF, WTO, UN. Therefore, the words do not mean anything at all , in fact to some people it may be rubbing salt on the wounds!
