India, a superstar, is it?

New Delhi, May 20: She is known for taking 'politically incorrect' pot-shots at the who's who of politics, business, Bollywood and what not! As writer and columnist, Shobha De, dons the mantle of an author for the fifteenth time, she takes upon the task of debating whether India can yet be accorded the superstar status, or the failings of this nation are still too many to outnumber its achievements.

She doesn't spare anybody, including the national capital, going to the extent of calling it a ‘hydra headed monster’ that ‘remote-controls the rest of the country’ and ‘a symbol of the corruption and rot that have destroyed the image of India’.

However, she sounds a little soft on Raj Thackeray, not on the ugly 'migrant' debate he has stirred in India's economic capital, but on the average Mumbaikars' concern about the over-burdened condition of their city.

"Even though I am entirely pro-free movement, and condemn balkanization of any kind, may be Raj Thackeray had a point. Pity, he didn't make it convincingly enough. In the bargain he triggered off a national debate on 'outsiders in our midst'," she writes. Though she had no sympathy for Raj Thackeray and his movement, but an understanding of the issue he has raised, De claims.

"You have to be in Mumbai to understand the rage if there is any," De said, while in the capital to release her book recently.

About Mumbaism by Vineet Billorey on 22 May 2008

I have lived in Mumbai and closely experienced the behaviour of Mumbaits to outsiders. Although, Raj may have some point, but then where will the people seeking job go?

THIS 'MACHCHAR' RAJ HAS TRAPPED HIMSELF IN THE LEGAL WEB THAT HE AND HIS GOONDA UNCLE HAS CREATED by BABURAO PATEL on 21 May 2008

Marathi journalists Kumar Ketkar and Shobha De say that Raj Thackeray is the loose cannon in Maharashtra politics but at the same time say that Raj has been very careful in his speech and has also cleverly kept himself away from rhetoric that can legally trap him. What a load of bullshit from Kumar Ketkar and Shobha De. What they have said about Raj is nothing but pure unadulterated sycophancy and ‘cheap chamchagiri’. What all the three Thackerays have been spewing from their dirty Fascist mouths is nothing but ignorant, incompetent, 'loose tongue' rhetoric with a lot of nonsensical sound bites. In fact like his 'loose tongue' semi-literate and senile uncle, Raj has totally entrapped himself legally. It just requires a gutsy writer, journalist, politician, lawyer or a policeman to lift the full entangled web up for the whole nation to see where this insect-sized 'icon' has been trapped.

KUMAR KETKAR AND SHOBHA DE ARE MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL SLAVES AND ARE TALKING THROUGH THEIR HATS by BABURAO PATEL on 21 May 2008

Raj Thackeray at his rally recently categorically said that he was preparing to take the law into his own hands, asked his goons to do the same by saying "take action whenever you feel necessary” and "Don’t wait for instructions." He further said that “If …….so and so…. distributes sticks to north Indians, I will distribute swords to Maharashtrians." All this is clear indication that these thugs, feeling the need to arm themselves against a threat they believe to be all too relevant to them, have been purchasing various items which are illegal to own, possess, procure and distribute. Each and everything that he has said above attracts the provisions of several statutes since it shows that with all intents and purposes they intend carrying out criminal acts and yet the police say there is nothing in his speech to arrest and prosecute him? Who are the police, Mr Deshmukh, Kumar Ketkar and Shobha De trying to delude and fool?

WHAT MARATHI CHAMCHA KUMAR KETKAR AND CHAMCHI SHOBHA DE SAY OR WRITE IS UTTER TRASH by BABURAO PATEL on 21 May 2008

It does not require a legal luminary to point out that all of Thackerays’ rhetoric all these months and years have included incitements of various degrees and sorts including incitement to hatred of particular, caste, class, race or religious group and incitements to commit various criminal acts and incitements likely to cause breach of peace and so many such words and deeds that can lead to violence or threat of violence or killings or that which are likely to endanger the peace and tranquility. They have openly threatened and carried out many acts of vandalism and criminal damage to properties. There are several statutes and charges that can be applied to their words and actions. Raj Thackeray at his rally recently categorically said that he was preparing to take the law into his own hands, asked his goons to do the same by saying "take action whenever you feel necessary” and "Don’t wait for instructions."

Shobha De and Raj Thackeray by K. B. Kale on 21 May 2008

Born Maharashtrian (Rajadhyaksha) and married to a Bengali (De), she is in a real fix about what to say! So she gives such "neither here nor there" ("narovaa kunjarovaa" style made famous by Dharmaraja in Mahabharata) replies which you can interprete any way you like and don't make any sense anyway.....just like most of her books. Just pure trash!

Re: by FelisLeo on 21 May 2008

Harish, I seriously think that you should undergo some sort of therapy. You seem to be harbouring a lot of anger towards muslims. I suspect that this bias might be affecting your daily judgments and decisions.

Shut up! by Harish Patel on 21 May 2008

Shobha DE on Thaggary by Sunil Awasthi on 20 May 2008

Hydra Headed Monster? by Sanju Mathur on 20 May 2008

Last few big issues in Delhi - economic and social. Jessica Lall, Priyadarshini Mattoo, reservations, demolitions etc. - all point to socio-economic change. Last few instances of unrest in Mumbai - banish north indians, burn mumbai because the BMC didnt prevent a pigeon from soiling Mrs. Balasaheb Thackeray's bust, anti muslim riots at least 3-4 times in the last 4 years etc. Hmm, I wonder. Which one is the hydra headed monster?

Never a super India by Sridhar on 20 May 2008

India can never become super star or super power as long as there is one law for the rich and influential and another law for the Aam Admi. It is as simple as this. Democracy does not mean just one person, one vote. It also means equality before the police, the government, the boards, the committees and the judiciary. The day the police treat no one above the law and has the courage to arrest from a cabinet minister to common person for any misdeeds, that day India will become a SUPER STAR. Just read that even Queen Mary in UK had to carry an ID card during the 2nd World War. Here we have SRK threatening that he should be above the rules of the game. With people like this, there will never be a Super India but only pampered Indians and their chamchas.

spot on! by Anupam Gupta on 20 May 2008

This is spot on!I have not come across many people who could describe Indian problem so well. As treatment of any disease begins with diagnosis, hopefully more people become aware of that, more could be done for that!

Very far from super India by Faraz on 20 May 2008

I completely fail to understand the hype about India shining and super India. Its all talk and no reality until we manage to get rid of the legacy of Raj that we still carry - red tapism, bureaucracy, and inequality in all aspects of society.

Re: by FelisLeo on 21 May 2008

I couldn't agree more. Yes, unless we improve our law

Re: by Felis Leo on 21 May 2008

I couldn't agree more. Yes, unless we improve our legal system India will not become a superpower even if we attain 12% GDP growth rate. It is so diffucult to live in India without participating in corruption.
