Kochi, March 21: India is an absolutely safe destination for foreign tourists and there is no apprehensions of any negative fallout of the murder of a British teenager on a Goa beach, Union Tourism Secretary Silabhadra Banerjee said.

"India is an absolutely safe destination as anywhere else in the world. There is no doubt about that," Banerjee said on the sidelines of the four-day International conference on ‘Responsible Tourism’.

All the state governments had much earlier been asked to set up ‘tourist police’, which some states have already put in place, he said.

At the state tourism secretaries conference held in New Delhi in January, it was suggested to utilise the services of ex-servicemen in tourist security related activities.

A set of draft guidelines in this regard has been formed in consultation with the Defence and Home ministries, which have been sent to all state governments, he said.

Tourism growth during January and Feburary this year was very ‘positive’ with a 11 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals.

During 2007, the country received five million foreign tourists, an increase of 12 per cent over 2006 and this trend continues in 2008 also, he said. The increase in forex earnings over 2006 was 34 per cent.

He said states like Kerala were doing very well. The tourism department was now focussing on North Eastern states and rural hot spots as part of the ‘Incredible India’ campaign.

British teenger Scarlette Eden Keeling was found dead on February 18 on Goa's Anjuna beach bringing to fore the safety and security of foreign tourists in the coastal state.

ABSOLUTELY WRONG by Aparna on 22 Mar 2008

ABSOLUTELY WRONG ! India is a beautiful country but beware of the Indian crowd! How come foreign tourism is encouraged when Indians themselves feel insecured in every nook and corner of their country? Day and night! Our last years trip terrified me completely! One has the feeling to be continuously surrounded by thieves and cheaters! It’s highly polluted and public transportations are nil and complicated. Never trust anybody there. Worse, the police! Hide your cameras and watches. Preserve your life above all and opt for another destination. Believe me. The reality is cruel. It’s a warning notice from an Indian who has immense regrets today.

India safe for tourists? by Megh on 22 Mar 2008

well, NY ses rape every minute, columbia has a killing related to death every minute, australia has one of the highest rates of murders per capita.... relatively india is much more tamed... crimes happen all across the globe; women are raped all across the globe; men are tortured and murdered all across the globe... and so does it happen in india. foreigners are kidnapped for ransom just as indians are killed, raped, car jacked etc etc across the globe. the fault is that of the media. if we have a government such as the chinese, media will be restricted and all would look such a pleasant experience... but we are a democracy... freedom of speech and expression is our right and thats why we get to know of all the ill effects of society. so let it be. we need to realise ourselves to change it. so no point in blaming india for events which are omnipresent.

And now a new report says that Goa is taking over from Cambodia and Thailand as the child prostitution capital of the world. What's going wrong with our society ? Goa is THE destination of the Indian Elite for Christmas and New Year. All the people that care have to do is say "We will not visit Goa unless this abuse of our children by foreign tourists is stopped and the local goverment takes immediate action".

Unsafe India for Tourists by Gope Lalwani on 22 Mar 2008

The Rackets of brutal Police force and Judicial system in India works together in collusion with each other, arresting and prosecuting foreign Nationals on falsetrumped charges for Extortion at gun point. he Foreign Nationals cannot afford to be detained in India Indefinitely till false case is ended, considering his/her Home,Livelihood, Nationality and Visa Regime Etc; This is the exact reason that, the foreign Nationals are the Victims (BAKRAS) of these Rackets. I am such victim of Indian Police and Judicial Brutality. Even Non-resident Indians are facing this situation while visiting India. These incidents are sending message to Tourists, NRI's and PIO's that India is not a safe country for visitors.

100% correct. by Savithri Shankar on 22 Mar 2008

It is true 100%. if we ERADICATE our police and Judicial system, (especially THROW ALL JUDGES--as all are 100% corrupt in one way or other), our country is safe.

There are lot of issues involved and if not taken care properly could bring displeasure of tourist worldwide.
