After the islanders posted a competitive 238 for six largely built around Kumar Sangakkara's 128, the Indian batsmen overcame some anxious moments before overhauling the target with just five balls to spare in a keenly-contested floodlit encounter at the Adelaide Oval.
The beleaguered Yuvraj Singh marked his return to form with a 70-ball 76 while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (50 not out), Irfan Pathan (31) and Rohit Sharma (24) were the other notable performers.
The victory has consolidated India's position for a place in the best-of-three finals and they need to win at least one of their remaining two matches to qualify for the summit showdown.
Australia were at the top of the points table with 17 points from five matches followed by India who have 12 points from as many matches. Sri Lanka were at the bottom of the table with six points from four games and need to win two of their remaining three matches to make it to the final.
India will play their next match against Australia at Sydney on February 24.
The Indian run chase began on a disastrous note as they lost Sachin Tendulkar (0), Gautam Gambhir (15) and Robin Uthappa (10) cheaply to be precariously placed at 35 for three at one stage before Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni came to the rescue of the team.

The main reason India won was because of the way the young unit fielded. Rohit Sarma stopped at least 4 boundaries and may have saved a total of 40 runs on the field. Seniors or no seniors a chase of 280 would have been almost impossible. It is time to move on. The selectors should be congratulated for a courageous decision.
Will like to know is he a good Cricket captain who pass comments like 1. They should play and not we should play2. Goes overboard praising a player3. Say I would have run better than my runner4. Stare at the umpire from behind the wickets when he declares not out5. Say they(openers/middleorder) did not play well Dont you think he should go for some captain communication classes or be sacked
Sourav and Sachin were/are great players but at the same time they cannot be at the same playing level throughout their career. There comes a point in time that they should leave or retire before they get axed and then whine they are better than the players in their place. I was laughing when I read the interview given by Sourav where he says he was surprised at this dropping. That is the ridiculous. If anyone goes back and looks at the last 2 to 3 years he and Sachin have played few good innings when team needed. I don't mean scoring hundreds when batting first and team wins. That is not pressure situation. They have never scored when it mattered or when the team needed the most. Dravid, Laxman, Yuviraj (i.e. until this series) and Dhoni have scored when the team needed them the most and that too many times. So, people should stop saying that Sourav should be back. I would rather have Laxman and/or Dravid in spite of their slow scoring as they can stop a collapse and keep the game within control
The repeated failure of the top order and the amateurish dismissals of yet to mature Rohit Sharma proves that Ganguly is still indispensible to this one day team
DHONI -YOUR LUCK IS GOOD. U R TEAM IS WINNING BECAUSE OF U.-GOD BLESS U.V REQUIRE PEOPLE LIKE U, DRAVID ,TANDU-NOT GANGU ,SEHWA,AGAR WHO COME TO THE TEAM BY CORRUPT MEANS.
tendulker-U BETTER RETIRE VOLUNTARILY. NO DOUBT U R A GREAT PLAYER.U HAVE BECOME OLD AND UR EYE SIGHT HAS BECOME WEAK.
Would anyone who loves cricket really want to see the back of Tendulkar. The man is pure genius in every form of the game. If anything, i think he has improved with age. He brings life to cricket, and quite frankly when he's not batting, the game is hardly worth watching. Retire? I don't think any right-minded cricket lover would want to see that day
Clive, can you recall the last time Tendulkar made a decent score while chasing in a one-day game, or in the second innings of a test match? If you can, please let the rest of us know (beware you may have to search for a long time)! And it's so embarassing that a player of his class gets bowled so often.
Tendulkar is the best whatsover...when he is playing the whole country will watch and if his out there are times people used to shutdown the TV....i hope u remember the times.....i was like that even now i am like that...i will not change because its the class....and for ur kindest information tendulkar won matches for india lot of times....that will never change...india needs him because he is a big moral support for all the youngesters with this batting..and have u ever seen tendulkar playing he always make sure that other person is also playing up to the mark thats what makes him greatest player in the world...just because he was out ..it doesnt matter he is the greatest......ever...
