Kolkata India faces a serious threat from cyber terrorists, particularly from Pakistan and China, cyber security expert Ankit Fadia said here today and called for steps to thwart them.

“Pakistani cyber criminals deface 50 to 60 Indian websites in a day but in retaliation India can only deface 10 to 15 websites and this has been going on since 2001,” Fadia claimed.

“Terrorists are using most advanced technologies for communication which include mainly VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) chats. Hiding messages inside photographs, draft, encrypted pen drive are some of the techniques to communicate with each other,” Fadia said.

Fadia, who had helped the Mumbai police trace the e-mail sent by terrorists soon after 26/11 attacks, said the country was vulnerable to cyber terrorism.

In a press conference to promote what is claimed to be India’s first tech show ‘MTV What the Hack!’, Fadia said, “After the recent attacks, we have tightened security at airports, railway and bus stations and at vital installations, but we are ignoring our cyber security”.

The next threat India faced would be from cyber terrorism and this attack could be carried out by terrorists without even touching Indian soil, he said.

Apart from Pakistan, he said, the next country which India needs to be wary of is China.

“China, which was never considered to be a key player in this field, has come up strongly in recent years,” Fadia said.

Fadia believes that as cyber awareness level among the Indians was far below the average level, the government should introduce courses in schools and colleges.

“The police department should have a cyber cell and they should ensure that tech-savvy people are inducted to handle the department,” Fadia said.

Thirdly, there should be international co-operation and an organisation like the Interpol could be formed to sort out cross-border cyber terrorism, the computer wizard said.
