New Delhi, December 10: Observing that India needs to address the issue of malnutrition on a "war footing", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said it was important to focus on foetal under-nourishment and child rearing practices in this connection.

"The challenges of malnutrition that India is facing need to be addressed on a war-footing. In this connection, it is important to focus on foetal under-nourishment and child rearing practices," he said in a message.

Singh said it was important for mothers to understand the importance of breast milk as both are source of nutrition and for building immunity in the child.

"The breast feeding promotion network of India has been doing valuable advocacy in this matter," he said.
