New Delhi, September 21: Describing Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, who set a record for the longest stay in space, as a "role model" for Indian children, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said India feels proud of her achievement.

Singh, who spoke to the astronaut in Ahmedabad over phone, congratulated her on her "unique achievement" and her contribution to the human quest for a better understanding of the Universe, PM's Media Adviser Sanjaya Baru said in a statement.

The Prime Minister said that she is a "role model" for Indian children and a "source of inspiration" for Indian women.

"India feels proud of her achievement, even though she is a citizen of the US," Baru quoted the Prime Minister as saying.

Singh also invited Williams to meet him in Delhi.

The astronaut, who spent a record 195 days onboard spaceship Discovery, arrived in Ahmedabad on Thursday on a week-long visit to India.
