India risks religious violence, says UN envoy

New Delhi, March 20: The UN freedom of religion investigator warned on Thursday that India risks more religious violence, like Gujarat's 2002 riots that killed 2,500 people, as delays to bring justice encouraged an atmosphere of impunity.

"All these incidents continue to haunt the people affected by them and impunity emboldens forces of intolerance," Asma Jahangir told a news conference as she finished off a tour of India.

"Today there is a real risk that similar communal violence might happen again unless incitement to religious hatred and political exploitation of communal tensions are effectively prevented," said Jahangir, who is a Pakistani rights activist.

Over the past two decades, India has suffered major religious riots between its different communities, like in Gujarat in 2002.

"Even today there is increasing ghettoization and isolation of Muslims in certain areas," she said.

But many of the perpetuators of religious riots have never been jailed amid a slow judicial system and what critics say is government inertia.

Jahangir criticised the slowness of government inquiries into previous religious clashes.

Jahangir criticsed law enforcement authorities for being reluctant to act against perpetuators of religious violence.

"At the same time, organised groups based on religious ideologies have unleashed the fear of mob violence in many parts of the country," she said.

"This institutionalised impunity for those who exploit religion and impose their religious intolerance on others has made peaceful citizens, particularly the minorities, vulnerable and fearful."

Jahangir, known as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion, highlighted attacks on Indians marrying people from different castes and religions in northern India, and attacks on Christians, lower castes and tribal people in Orissa in 2007.

ASMA JAHANJIIR'S INSINUATONS AGAINST HINDUS by A.Mahadevan on 22 Mar 2008

India can expect only a subjective report because of Pakistan’s pathological hatred for Hindu-majority India. Asma Jahanjir should first compile a report about the vicious hatred and intolerance for the non-Muslim world in the very conservative and fundamentalist Saudi-Arabia, Pakistan and other leading OIC countries. Asma Jahanjir is suggesting Hindus as the scapegoat for the self-inflicted wounds, and aberrations of the Indian Muslims and for their unfair demands and agitation for ‘above the law treatment’ at the expense of the legitimately needy. Assam Jeanie should note that the Indian Muslims are much better off and are living in save and secure envioernment than their co-religionists in Pakistan: and the main culprits who instigate the religious valence in India are the Pakistani agents and the Pakistan’s military trained terrorists. Have you included in the report the involvement of Pakistani terror elements in the religious violence in India, Asma Jahanjir?

Was The Parttion was incomplete? by A Trapped Hindu from Karachi on 22 Mar 2008

asmaji, what have you done to protect Hindu girls in Pakistan? Hindu girls are kidnapped in day lights then forced to convert, and then her parents too are forced to convert, only because Pakistan since 1947 has successfully ethnically cleansed the nation of Hindus, making sure, they are converted by threats or face poverty and die hungry, knowing well the Hindus of India do not care of their brothers, no matter where they are suffering ,in Bangladesh, Kenya or Fiji.

Religious violence in India by Vinodgupt on 20 Mar 2008

Asma Jahangir is quite right that India risks religious violence. India never learnt how to solve its minority problem like Pakistan did at the time of its birth. India should take a leaf out of Pakistan's book of solving minority issue and follow the same steps Pakistan did in 1947. Asma should not have any problem with it. Since then Pakistan's record regarding Hindu Muslim which used to be endemic in what became Pakistan has been almost perfect. One never hears of Hindu Muslim riots in Pakistan -- there have been none since 1947.

pot calling kettle black ! by B Shah on 20 Mar 2008

Year of the Jokes. by kerty on 20 Mar 2008

Oh yes. India need lessons and lectures from Pakistan and UN about religious freedom. Don't we? Nations who act like only majority have religious freedom and rest have to be crushed by violence and wars are telling India that only minorities can have religious freedom and religious freedom of majority must be crushed thru minority-instigated riots and government fiats and UN will be there to oversee it. Are we supposed to laugh at these jokers?

Terror by Asmad Ashtak on 20 Mar 2008

There has been religious violence in Kashmir, with over 300,000 Hindus displaced may murdered and raped. I guess this doesn't get mentioned by the "Envoy". There is confliuct of interest issue here a - a MuslimPakistani couldn't be an envoy to come and comment on India.

Is she out of her mind by Indian on 20 Mar 2008

It is a pity the the name of US is dragged to perpetuate the lie that minorities are under attack in India, while the opposite is the truth. Everywhere in India, everything Hindu is under siege, whether temples controlled by so-called secular government (not mosques), educational institutions of Hindus controlled by the so-called secular government, burning of kar sevaks being lightly treated by Congress/Sonia, killing of Hindus in Kashmir in millions, maltreatment of all temples in Tamil Nadu by DMK/Karunanidhi and elsewhere, appointment by Sonia of only Christians/Muslims/Hindus who toe the line for important posts, widespread christianisation of Northeast, the list is endless.. Any one who wants to see the truth can see that Hindu proportion is goind down in India because of forced conversions by powerful muslims and christians; and, in Pakistan again, the Hindu population is going down because of killing, conversion, etc. And, this lady comes and talks nonsense in the name of UN

Christian Terror on Hindus in India;s North East, wioth western Sipport. by immoral dirty crstyn on 20 Mar 2008

Why the Christian terror, supported by the Church and the West and her Asian and other cronies, in India's North East is ignored?

what a joke?? by DNayar on 20 Mar 2008

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion should first answer why the percentage of minorites in her own country has reduced drastically. Does she want Hindus to follow with the Pakistan model of dealing with religious friction?

FAKE HUMAN RIGTHS ACTIVITS ! by Hemant kulkarni on 20 Mar 2008

Asma Jehangir, should first talk about the fate of minorities in Pakistan. These are the people, who are real enemies of uneducated and poor muslims!

Such Mumbo Jumbo is deplorable. by DILIP/FRANCE on 20 Mar 2008

It is so disconcerting to read the ranting of proelytiser and a sanctimonious hypocrit, who uses the vessel of U.N. to propagate such odious propaganda and envy.We are sick to the teeth of such "experts" whoese pre occupation is to whipp up frenzied and biased clap trap.We suggest these experts go back to their own country and take a holistic look at their own back garden. The systematic and deliberate genocide that were and is still being perpetrated on Hindu/Sikh remaining community, they are being persecuted, forced to convert to Islam, their places of worship being destroyed, they are harrassed and they are targetd for robbery and ransom.Openly their HUMAN RIGHTS violated and women being raped.Such high moral attitude is hollow and two faced. All Facts prove beyond dounbt that Indian Muslims, enjoy more democratic and social rights than any Pakistani, even many muslims are econmically better off, than their counterpart.Such twaddle has to stop now.
