"...I have a very difficult time understanding why the Government of India continues to pursue a pipeline with Iran and Pakistan at a time when other nations in the world are not just implementing UN approved sanctions, which is India’s historic position, but are going further by cutting off access to banking services and discouraging other economic interactions with Iran," Ackerman said at a Congressional hearing.
The senior Democrat, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Sub Committee on Middle East and South Asia and is due to visit India next week, said that Washington had some differences with New Delhi, the major one being India's relations with Iran.
"I want to be clear that I am not suggesting that India abandon its historically independent foreign policy, although I am sure there are those in India who will accuse me of just that.
"What I am suggesting is that India join the other nations who are doing more than just implementing UN sanctions in an effort to economically isolate Iran," he said at the subcommittee hearing in Washington on Wednesday titled 'More Than Just The 123 Agreement: The Future of US-Indo Relations.'
"It is an effort that I believe is fully consistent with India's historic support of multilateral institutions and cooperation," Ackerman, who has been a Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, added.
"I hope that India's officials will hear and understand the US view of Iran: that Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and regional hegemony is a serious threat posed to international peace and stability in the Middle East and the vital national security interests of the United States," the lawmaker said.
"I believe Indian officials understand the US perspective on Iran and I know that India shares US opposition to Iran possessing nuclear weapons," Ackerman said.
"Their (India's) courageous IAEA votes demonstrate that," Ackerman said at the hearing, referring to India's vote against Iran at the UN's atomic watchdog in 2005.
Why is it hard for US to understand that India needs a huge amount of energy. US had been isolating India for a long time since independence when it was making efforts for self reliance. Let US offer nuclear deal without strings to India as token of confidence bearing in mind that nuclear energy will only contribute a fractionally to India's massive energy needs.The unintended effect of what US wants is to starve India of its energy supply while it drags its feet in supplying nuclear energy with small print.This is not rocket science!

Irrespective of India's relationship with Iran, India should not accept any dictation from the US and it should maintain its sovereignty. UN is actually ;United Nations of tthe U S and it has no individuality of its own! U N is supposed to protect smaller nations from the tyranny of big powers! What did it do to Iraq? What is it doing to Israel, which is openly threatening to attack Iran? What has it done to Iraq, which was invaded by a super power illegally, illegitimately and unscrupulously? The country was ruined beyond recognition!
Ackerman has lent credence to the suspicion that the Nuclear Deal is only energy specific. India must ensure that this risk is covered before any nuclear plants are put up in India. Steps like huge penalty for Foreign Promoters in case of withdrawing for any reason alongwith keeping the current pricing intact should be the basis for signing any new contract. Brokers like Enron and Halliburton would be there to make 10% on the deal and then fund elections in USA.

First when there is a Global pressure on Iran , India can act as a buffer state to enable communication. US should believe that India as a Nuetral Player can facilitate communication in Highest levels of Iran.Second. How come the countries pressuring Iran are the ones who have , individually, enough Nuclear arsenal to destroy the world many times. They have gone into the nuclear club and have locked the door for other countries- making it difficult to even work on commercial nuclear proliferation. India need Uranium for the electricity- they will pay the market price for that- Why cann't the countries like Australia, US do not supply that? They can have enough safe guards , imposed by IAEA on supervision on the process of inspecting the spent fuel and how to stop moving that to the nuclear weapon production without affecting the soverignity of the country.
The religious elements are the biggest threat to democracy everywhere. We have to contain them so that the countries of the world can continue to trade and prosper. We have Iran a religious state with nuclear arms which can destabilize the middle east and the oil supply to the world. By agreeing to trade with it, we are making that country too strong to contend with.

The intent of sanction is specific to the identified cause. It is also expected that the identified cause would have a finite lifetime and status would return to normalcy. For decisions which have long gestation periods for planning itself and which could lead to immediate pay off once normalcy is restored, it is better to continue with the planning stage. The incentive towards normative response becomes that much stronger. So from a broad perspective such efforts strengthen the case for steering towards international law. Besides, the legal angle, there are developmental imperatives which can not be brushed aside.
Besides, India has already committed to all SC mandated conformance.

The super power rivalry which led USSR's entry to Afganisatan and no holds barred US resistance has led to modern form of terrorism. Would India endorse China supplying nuclear arms to Pakistan? If no, why do we need to endorse China proliferating elsewhere. Indian route to Nuclear development has been carefully thought out and has conformed to all parameters of non-proliferation, plus non-violative of any international laws. Where India thought it would be violative, India simply did not sign those laws. Iran is a signatory to CTBT and NPT. They need to abide by the letter and spirit of the international laws. A legally strong Indian stand would disable China from being an adventerous proliferator everywhere. One wonders who is Gary Ackerman and why is he coming to India and what is his status (if at at all any )in US government or US congress. There are no definite answers to all these questions. Then is it his personal opinion that he wants Indian government to accept? If so , he should just keep quite and visit Agra,Delhi,Jaipur and go back. If Nuclear is the best option for Energy, then why has US put a moratorium on any new Nuclear Reactors in their country. Neither is Nuclear Energy cheap - there is a huge cost borne by government which people don't see when they calculate cost of N-energy. India is blissfully Solar irradiated. Just capturing 1% of Solar radiation is more than enough for the entire country's Electricity needs. And then there are Wind, Ethanol, Algae, and many more energy sources...

As for Nuclear being the cheapest - the cost of Energy does not end after the Energy is produced. The spent fuel disposal is a major cost and threat to you and your future generations. The cost of Insuarance of N-reactor itself is prohibitive. Also if you look beyond your narrow vision - the Alternative, Distributed energy is where all the venture money (including Silicon Valley) is going. Fossil and Nuclear are not the good options - they are just desperate options (e.g France).
