Islamabad Amid a war of words with India over the Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistan has said its armed forces were fully capable of "thwarting any aggression from the east" and New Delhi should not underestimate its military might.

India should not underestimate Pakistan's military power because it is "capable of thwarting any aggression from the east", President Asif Ali Zardari said at a meeting with Gen Tariq Majid, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, in Islamabad on Tuesday night.

Majid told the President that the armed forces were fully capable of meeting any eventuality on the eastern front, 'Dawn News' channel said.

Separately, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said while the operational preparedness of the armed forces was at an "optimal level," both Pakistan and India cannot afford tension along their border.

"Nobody wants tensions on the borders and we are moving responsibly and with caution," Gilani told reporters on the sidelines of an official ceremony.

The military is fully capable of defending Pakistan's territorial integrity, he said, adding that the operational preparedness of the armed forces is at an "optimal level".

The nation and the army are united to defend the country and its territorial integrity, he added.

"The government is aware of the situation in the region and will act as things move," Gilani said.

During a meeting with Shahid Malik, Pakistan's High Commissioner to India, Zardari said Islamabad wants good relations with New Delhi but "on the basis of sovereign equality".

Don't be so thursty by RS on 24 Dec 2008

Dear brother from Pakisatan .As every indian has right to defend motherland so has every Pakistani. That is what a true blood means . But if two brothers attempt to kill the mother than both are insane. Genitics does't change in 60 odd years . One thing is for sure, if common man in india pay the price of one kind democracy so the common man in Pakistan also pay the price of that kind of democracy. In the capacity of common man only you my brother and me will suffer . Those in India who want war against nation should have volunteered to shed their blood before the security took over and those in pakistan have not witnessed deaths of terror should voulunteer themself to terrorists and say kill us before you kill others. This applies to those who are born of human beings .

Promote peace not WAR by waqas on 24 Dec 2008

Yes we appreciate your PM statements, but what’s purnaaab mukher jee (Gay looking) been saying since last 2 weeks????? What did BAL THAKRAY SAY YESTERDAY ABOUT ‘HINDU TERROR OUTFITS’ Forget them look at these blogs, above 98% of Indians want war. You guys live in fools heaven, and some of you FAGS are still dreaming to get the land back? What does that suppose to mean? Attack Pakistan kill them all and get the land? You guys really respect the humanity? Don’t you?We might have internal problems, we will sort them out soon but this time we won’t let you guys to intervene, the way you did in 1971. IGNORE HIM by Aniyan on 24 Dec 2008

DURING THE COURSE OF DAYS, THE THIEF BECAME THE POLICE !! ZARDARI KNOWS THAT TECHNOLOGY BECAUSE OF HIS BACKGROUND. IGNORE HIM ! HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT !

Unless you finish Pakistan, we'll continue to have trouble. A rouge and that's what Pakistan is, understands only one language

First creat forign reserve, before talking about war by Jon on 24 Dec 2008

Dear Zardari instead of talking in air first declare that you do not have money to buy food and fuel to your army for atleast a month, if war broke out.

Zardar is Pawn by shyam kishore on 24 Dec 2008

Zardari excersise least control on his goverment . half of the nation is uncontrollable and other half is controlled by the islamists .Army is the only realiity there . The donations from rich arab countries for so called charity and the diverted fund from the US to fight the terror is actually lands in the hands of Army - Jihad nexus. thousands of Madrassas in Pakistan is breeding and exporting terrorism to all the corners of the world . US is well aware of it ,however they have been caught in a deliemma .Pakistan is the only logistically viable place for them to mount attach on Afgan or on Russia in futire. Zardari is just a Pawn .and Pakistan is soon going to be taken over by Talibanistic Ideology.

Ignore Zardari by Govind Joshi on 24 Dec 2008

Zardari is compelled to speak what he speaks, or else he will be wiped out by the ISI - MILITANT OUTFITS nexus. In my view, gven a choice Zardari would not want to confront India any which way. Also I believe that however unreliable the Pakistani establishment is, Musharraf was the best bet India had w.r.t. Indo-Pak relations. His hunger for power ensured that he did not want to look supporting the hatred mongering mullahs. Also despite his sabre rattling tactics and inane rhetorics, Musharraf realised soon the value of co-operation with India as against the futility of confrontation

Pakistan by amit on 24 Dec 2008

India doesn’t underestimate Pakistan at all. As an Indian I know Pakistan is a huge suicide bomber who would not hesitate to kill itself and kill whoever comes closer.

Since Pakistanis are non state actors, Pakistan is a non state. Why should non state be sovereign? by Unsecular on 24 Dec 2008

As these non state muslims say, Pakistanis are non state actors. So Pakistan is a non state. We should just treat them as murder convicts, including Zardari, and take back the land these non state criminals have been squatting on since 1947.

Pakistan the migraine by satyadev on 24 Dec 2008

The Pak president is speaking the tone of army man. It is not difficult to understand what text is he reading from. He is just reading out from prepared tutorial of the army. Pakistan continues to be spoilt child of the region and global leaders must take a view on this international migraine. Before the control of Pakistan slips into the hands of Undesirable elements liike smugglers, criminals and fanatics it is time for Big powers to take considered action. First the army should be disbanded and UN forces should take control of Nuclear centres and other critical facilities.

Spineless Zardari by Vande Matramvande.matra on 24 Dec 2008

How can India underestimate Pakistan? You (Pakistanis) have already shown your capabilities in Mumbai Terror attack? Mr Zardari, if you have guts go and capture the assasins of your wife. Why are you waging war against India?

Temptations to war to save unpopularity--- by romesh.sharma on 24 Dec 2008

Mr.Zardariyou are living either in the world of illusions or you are simply too fool to calculate the consequences if india really attacks Pakistan. Its ignorance to exaggerate and over estimate own capabilities through which Pakistan had faced surrender and humiliation against Indian supermecy. Its disgusting to see you behave no better than Talibans and AlQaeda type of people who know nothing but use threats and aggression.Till today India has neither deployed its forces near borders or given any signal of military action.Do you think if atall India will take any such action it will give you the time-table for that! The only think pinches Pakistan is its own inferiorty complex and extreme jealousy. It wants to be equal/at par in every sphere which Pak can never be.Moreover India had treated all neighbouring countries with equal sovereign basis.Mr Zardari is taking Pakistan towards conditions like Zimbawe and behaves like Mugabe.Such statements are invitation to hunger and debauchery.

Pakistanis should realize and rise by Hatebuster on 24 Dec 2008

I feel pity for Pakistani people who have been put to terrible risks and untold miseries by their incompetent leaders. While their mullahs make normal and free life impossible by dictating their people about what to see, eat and wear. their military leadership has gradually converted the soil into a safe heaven for terrorists and fundamentalists who have eventually started targeting Pakistani people, government and property in their pursuit of Jehad. Pakistani people have to understand that their enemy is not India but their own leaders who are a nuisance for not just India but also themselves and entire world. Time to realize this and clean the house soon. Neither demonizing India nor spreading hatred against Western world will be able to help them - not any longer.

BHUTTOS HUSBAND by ranit on 24 Dec 2008

MR ZARDARI...talk some sense, you dont even have your own identity . you are known as bhotto's husband. ..all you been talking about is war while India is trying to avoid it...if it comes to war mr zardari , you will be the one to loose as you did in 1971 and 1965 ...IF YOU ARE A SMART GUY YOU WILL GET THIS LOUD AND CLEAR...' BREAKFAST IN DELHI, LUNCH IN LAHORA AND DINNER IN ISLAMABAD.'.....MIND IT

JAI HIND by salim on 24 Dec 2008

mr Zardari we never take our enemy for granted

Pakistani statements by Avinash Baranwal on 24 Dec 2008

Actually, these small mentality leaders will always talk like that.It seems Pakistan is still not understanding it's current domestic or international situation. These kind of people harm themselves and others. Country like India, who always shows soft face(whatever be the reason), never earn respect. The fitting reply should be a hard hit to Pakistan in whatever way. Ofcourse war brings loss to both the sides...But 'wahi kaun jinda rahati hai, jo marane ke liyee taiyar rahati hai' -> Considering this, India must hit Pakistan hard and in such a way that they never think ill for us and keep their mouth shut. Small metality speaks more...What is surprising is that, Pakistan is speaking more vehementally than India is speaking. I am sure, top indian brass and politicians are not taking it lightly...We all must be feeling the same...But still, we would like to see some action. This will earn a respect in world arena..which is more than trivial gains, keeping silence.

It is India who was warning Pak, and now it is Pak which warning India! by ranjit on 24 Dec 2008

Dirty terrorist minded Zardari, not ashamed to come in full suit and talk Jihadi like statements! You are lucky that India has lot of patience, one day that will come to an end and that will ensure your end once and for all you dirty pakistani terrorists. You Pakistanis have now become a migraine to the entire world, and very soon you will be dumped under the earth!

Pakistan is safe by Mushtaq Mohammad on 24 Dec 2008

India can't afford to attack Pakistan. The 180 Indian muslims are just waiting for their turn to join hands with Pakistani and Bangladeshi brothers and dis-member India and teach Hindus and other people their place. Its only time ... The truth is going to prevail ultimately.

India shouldnt underestimate the threat- do we need pak? by oldindian on 24 Dec 2008

What a dumb guy! in response to our PM's statement that pakistan must dismantle terrorist network within pakistan, he talks about military preparedness... the potent combination of secularism with wooly headed armed idiot (I dont know equivalent of idiot in diplomatic parlance) is going to set us back and rob india of whatever development it has managed to achieve over last 30 years. In other words, we are combining all the right things - armed prepardness, tough posturing, secularism, fight against terrorism- in such a potent fashion. It is time for indians - the individual citizens - to make tough choices. are they going to cling to illusion of daily prosperity and over period of time allow the enemy to destroy us or take them head on now.
