Overall the world became less peaceful for the second consecutive year, said the fourth annual GPI released.
As the global economy continues to falter, this year's data shows an intensification of conflicts and growing instability linked to the downturn that began in 2008, with several countries seeing sharp increases in homicides, violent demonstrations and fear of crime, it said.
The only study to quantify global peacefulness, the GPI is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
According to the report, South Asia saw the greatest decrease in peacefulness, as a result of increased involvement in conflicts, a rise in deaths from internal conflict and human rights abuses.
The main countries experiencing decreases in peacefulness were India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Three BRIC countries-Russia (143), India (128) and China (80)-saw substantial declines in peacefulness, while Brazil's score remained essentially stable (83) compared to the 2009 Index.
In fact, Russia saw one of the largest drops in peacefulness of any country this year due to its war with Georgia, ongoing acts of terror, and some protests across the country resulting from a deteriorating economic situation.
China saw its score deteriorate because of worsening security in parts of the country, notably Xinjiang province, where violent conflict prompted rises in several measures of societal safety, the report said.
However, the US (85) improved its 2010 GPI score, registering its biggest year-on-year improvement since the first Index was released in 2007.
The improvement came as a result of a decrease in the number of deaths from external conflict and an increase in political stability.
Western Europe continues to be the most peaceful region, with the majority of the countries ranking in the top 20.
All five Scandinavian nations rank in the top ten; however, Denmark dropped five spots to 7 because of decrease in respect for human rights and continuing involvement in Afghanistan.
Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan were the least peaceful countries for the second consecutive year.
Syria, Georgia, the Philippines, Russia and Cyprus were this year's biggest fallers; the report said.
"How peaceful a country is depends on the internal structures, institutions, and attitudes that sustain and promote peace as well as on external factors," said Clyde McConaghy, board director of the IEP.
"This year's top five countries, and more peaceful countries in general, have certain things in common: well functioning governments, stable business environments, respect for human rights, low levels of corruption, high rates of participation in education, and freedom of information," McConaghy said.

There should be an index of 'Top countries that promote war'. US will top the list :-) Otherwise how would it's economy run? General Dynamics, Rayetheon, Lockhead Martin and many more companies in US depend on continuous wars in all poor countries. So, if those so called advanced countries have to live in peace, the other side of the world has to be in conflict all the time. They say Sweeden has not gone into a war for hundreds of years...but look at the sofesticated arms it exports and the foreign exchange it gets from it's arms industry. If the world did not have any conflicts, these advanced ecomonies will be shattered. I know many readers might argue..'who asked the poor countries to buy the arms'...I ask them back...'Why do advanced countries (read the alliances like NATO, SEATO and CENTO) poke their nose into poor countries internal affairs and police them?, isn't it just for power struggle?'. Keep the arms for your defence not for export, the world will be a much better place
Don't worry the Congress and UPA is determined to take it to 250th rank soon. They are dumping 1000 crores in Kashmir to support traitors and anti-nationals. They will rehabilitate all the maoists by providing free AK47 to all of them so that they can continue to divide India.
Law & Order brings opportunity and prosperity automatically.Current India boom is just because, just deregulation of obstructing Babudom.Self growth by enterprenerious Indians. Weak government cannot provide adequate L&O. PM holding close to his chest economy his feifdom, ignoring all else, I fear.
Keep up the good work UPA govt. You make me feel real proud of our country. Mera Bharat mahan.... Magar Neta usse bhi Mahan
Our fall has been largely due to: 1. Opposition's obsession with disruption,; 2. OPposition stalling institutions; 3. Frequent internal conflicts 4. Opposition's attitude not conducive for propmotion of peace and stability 5. High incidence of corruption: and 6. Lattitude for promotion of peace.ackof
By abolishing POTA:Vociforiosly supporting Human Rights of Terrorists, Seditionists and Neglecting humna-rights of victims of Terror Like Kasmiri-Pandits we have encouraged fissiperous forces and they would wreck havoc on India for decades to come.
Figures of this nature carry no weight esentially beacuse, out of 195 countries officially recognised, how many have population above 100 million ??? Where as China and India have population more than 1000 million. How far it is correct to compare lillyputs with giants ? Just 10 countries make up more than 60% of the population. So if you want to show the figures, restrict it only to these 10 countries. Don't bring irrevalent land masses into picture and there by giving false picture about general law and order on the planet. There is no big deal in listing places like vatican and switzerland and say they are most peaceful. Have commonsense in place before throwing statistics.
Was 128 the last number ?
Credit or discredit rather should go to congress and upa rule who have been sleeping over terrorism, naxalism, maoism, communalism. It is congress who claims to be secular but encouraging communalism thro out. What with terrorists like afzal being protected, India at 128th place is not at all a surprise, given that fact that India is misruled by congress and upa who wakes up only to there vote banks problems and sleeps for the rest of the time. COngrats to MMS and his madam, upa and congress.
So riddle me this: under whose watch did Pakistan manage to send its soldiers to Kargil? Under whose watch did terrorists manage to hijack an Indian plane, land it in India, and then manage to fly out of India into Afghanistan? Under whose watch was our country's Parliament attacked? Or the Akshardham temple? In a state ruled by which party were over 2000 people killed in communal riots? It's easy to keep talking nonsense if you ignore the facts.
It is more than 5000 Sikhs who were killed in Delhi under Congress, are you refering that? About Akshardham, the culprits found and punished. It just had followed horrific Gujrat train burning of Hindus by some islamists supported by congress. In the following riots 700 muslims and 350 Hindus were killed, most of deaths in any police shhot out to quell the mobs in post independent India. That is teh report by UPA govt. About Khandar, 3 terrorists were freed to gain life of 200 citizens, and FM personally went to Afganistan to bring back Indian citizens. In almost all communal riots in India, there is congress hand and they use riots to scare minorities in to insecurity so that they keep voting congress always. Before all this theer wer Bhagalpur, Kanpir and so many other congress organized riots..About Kargil, Vajpayee managed to end the war and Pakistan has to withdraw with shame.. Read what Paki generals write about that shame they had to face. Don't talk liek some nut case Jayanti Natarajan or Tiwari who are payed to lie..Have you ever thought about multibillion scams under UPA lately? Pawar, Raja, Mulayam, Lallu, Paswan, Karunanidhi all your heroes raping the nation to keep 'communal' or nationalist forces at bay?
though India slips to 128th place yet 'BHARAT MAHAN HAI.'
