Thimphu, May 17: Becoming the first world leader to address the Bhutan Parliament, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh strongly pitched for a South Asia that is ‘at peace with itself’ and expressed India's readiness to assist in making the region more secure and prosperous.

Singh, who is on a two-day visit, assured Bhutan that India will stand by the Himalayan country as a factor of stability and support.

The Indian Prime Minister is the first world leader to address the Bhutan Parliament after the historic March elections taking the country on the path of democracy.

"India desires to see a South Asia which is at peace with itself. We wish to contribute to ever widening circles of security, peace and prosperity in our region," Singh said addressing the Bhutan National Assembly.

"It is with this objective that we look towards working further with Bhutan, in both the bilateral and regional context. A Bhutan that is sovereign, prosperous and secure is central to our vision for the future," he said.

Hallucinations--- by romesh.sharma on 17 May 2008

A PM, who has utterly failed to give lowest degree of security to his own Nation and citizen should be ashamed of speaking/promising peace and security to the whole region. Before bothering much about Bhutan's sovereignity he should make sure that China stops claiming Arunachal.Heredity and circumstances make people what they are and actions are inevitable result of mental and moral constitutions with which they come into this world but operated by external influences. In his case its only the external forces which make him speak.I don't think if there were enough in the assembly to hear him!

How will India do it? by Sreenath on 17 May 2008

How exactly does Manmohan Singh make South Asia a safer place and terror free? By begging terrorists to leave us alone? One who can't make his own country safe should not attempt to make the entire world safe. How ridiculous! Good joke!
