Moscow, July 3: India will get its first Akula class Russian nuclear submarine in 2009, equipping its navy with the quietest and lethal underwater war machine after a gap of 17 years to enhance its blue water capabilities.

Factory trials of the multi-role nuclear submarine, christened INS Chakra which India-will get on a 10-year-lease, commenced on June 11 at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur shipyard and will be followed by sea trials, Russian defence sources said, adding it will be delivered by September 2009.

According to experts, Chakra would help India fill the void caused by the delays in the indigenous Advanced Technology Vessel project to build a nuclear powered, guided missile attack submarine.

Three Indian naval crews for the nuclear submarine have already been trained at the specially set up training centre in Sosnovy Bor near St. Petersburg.

This facility would also be used for training crews for the Indian nuclear submarines of ATV project currently in the advanced stages of development, sources said.

Though they said that India has financed the completion of construction of submarine of project 971 "Shchuka B"(NATO codename Akula) under the USD 650 million deal signed in 2004 as part of the larger Gorshkov package, they did not reveal the cost of the lease of Chakra.

Akula (Shark) is the quietest Russian attack submarine and Chakra has been christened after its predecessor leased by the Indian Navy in 1988 from the erstwhile USSR.

In January 1988, ex-USSR had leased K-43 nuclear submarine of project 670 (NATO codename Charlie) which was with the Indian Navy as INS Chakra till March 1991, when under the intense US pressure beleaguered Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev had refused to extend the lease.

Defence Purchases of India by k chopra on 10 Jul 2008

Pressures under which our defence purchases are done has a lot to do with planning in advance. There is near bankcrupsy here:every country on earth needs defence, its no big deal, and equally, the solutions are threadbare: encourage local defence equipment production in the private sector while appointing a couple of reputed international defence equipment consultants to scour the world for best kind of technology at the cheapest price and in the given time frame. Priority of defence needs should always remain on top, just as the needs of farming should at all times. Most of all, hold the defence minister responsible, once giving him an uninterrupted five years tenure:don't change the horse midcourse! Depending continuously on other countries is sure way of exposing the exploitative tendencies of their defence exports. So, my friends, we just need to do this: create private defence production capability with sufficient funding assistance plus appointing consultants before purchases.

Submatine from Russia by Ashok Mehdiratta on 07 Jul 2008

Either our esteemed readers donot read the contentsproperly or they choose to ignore important details.Lease for last submarine expired in 1991 and for 17 years we did not have a nuc sub.Now we are getting one after a gap of 17 years to enhance our blue water capabilities. No country buys scrap and the details are available on the net,one can get it.If it is undergoing harbor tests and will carryout deep sea tests later one has to understand that trials are carried out in respect of new eqpt and not scrap.Once ATV is ready by 2012,even that will take a lot of time for introduction in to navy.Let experts do their job and take appropriate decisions.

this is a wise move (Nuclear Sub) by Somebody on 04 Jul 2008

first of all i want to say this is a good news. second i want ot say that in current world no country can lease or sell a nuclear submarine and the peoples who says it is a junk, please search the net about nuclear sub's. they understand that it will gives indian navy more teeth and our scientists a model to develop more powerfull and advance nuclear sub's. Our ATV project is in its last stage and we have an operational ATV in 2012. till then, it gives our navy a very usefull experience to operate advance nucelear sub's.

Indian government must improve funding for indigenous technology by Ishwar on 03 Jul 2008

Lakhs of rupees of public money is used to subsidize the education of IIT students, but finally these graduates move to greener pastures overseas. And to add salt to the wounds, the government buys redundant technology from abroad, since indigenous technology is still nascent.

reply to ishwar by aditya on 04 Jul 2008

hi my frnd I feel ur completely ignorant of number of IIT students now opting to go out !! just check out . It does take some guts and a lot of gov support for being a entraprenure.
