Bangalore India will develop a nuclear capable missile with a range of over 5,000 km as part of the Agni series by December next year, the country's top defence scientist has said. Revealing for the first time that the 5,000 km plus range missile, dubbed Agni 3 + will be ready for trials by 2010, DRDO Chief M Natarajan has said that work is already on to add a third engine to the Agni 3 missile that has already been successfully test fired.

With the new missile, India will be able to reach targets as far as Europe and will for the first time have the capability to reach any part of China. Till now, the 3,500 km plus Agni III has been the longest-range nuclear capable missile with India. Natarajan said that work is already on to add a third stage to the Agni III missile and he was confident that a 'technology demonstrator' will be ready by "December 2010".

I DISAGREE by Mrinal Dhar, New York on 13 May 2009

Sridhar, please don’t mix terror victims to the nuclear capable missile development. Being sympathetic to the terror victims, I would say that today’s modern world judge a country on the basis of so many factors and two of them are how the country is economically and militarily powerful. United States of America acts as a Police man of the world just because they are on top of those. It’s a great thing Indian Scientist are achieving that feet of 5000 k.m. capable missile and I am sure the day India does that testing, that will be a great news here in the U.S. Most of the people don’t know about India but they know India is nuclear capable state. In the world there are thousands of nuclear bombs built by spending billions of dollars but only two has been used so far. Fortunately, nobody wants to use the N.bombs but still they are building it!!!

good development by shiva on 13 Feb 2009

Awaiting for a state when India can send missiles to any part of the world. This is a step towards that direction.Good.

Waste of taxpayer monies by Sridhar on 13 Feb 2009

I still don't understand why we bother developing our missiles if we have no intention of using them. Honestly we should spend all the defence budget on providing ex-gratias to victims of terror attacks. This is the only thing we are good at. Shame on our country to parade our missiles every year without having any intention of using them on our cruel neighbors who are a constant threat to our nation.

DRDO by V K Das on 13 Feb 2009

It is better that we are told what has been produced, tested and accepted by the defence services and has become operational. we are fed on too many platitudes and in the end we find we have nothing after years of research and publicity.

more credible in this decade by shiva on 13 Feb 2009

In this decade, many of the defence deals were completed before time.In media, only those deals are focussed which are delayed.Dont worryIndia is growing faster than previous decadeKeep a smile face in ur hearts in this topic.

missile is fine, what about the decision maker? by Ajay, Pune on 13 Feb 2009

Our scientists should develope some version of viagra for our spineless timid politicians in Delhi, so that they can take some decisive action.

Why do we need subject in this?? by Jamwal on 13 Feb 2009

China is a bigger threat to India than pakisatan which is already imploding. Even Prithvi and previous versions of Agni are more than enough for the parasite in west

free to dream by hafeez on 13 Feb 2009

ur for behind Pakistan in missile technology..........if u can hit US than Pakistan surely can hit the MOON.....ha..ha.hahaaaaa

Porkistan is no threat by Rakesh on 16 Feb 2009

You are far behind us in every way.....except begging and all the other not so good things....And India has already hit the moon.....and yeh when Pakistan sends a missile to hit India or the US it will definitely go to the moon

True range by Bharat on 13 Feb 2009

Range depends on the payload. Agni III itself is an intercontinental ballistic missile which can reach whole of Europe and Australia. At lighter payload Agni III can reach even the US. Agni V surely can reach the whole of US with a HEAVIER payload

Move on... by Vishal on 13 Feb 2009

Wow Ganesh, I support your idea. It would be a spectacular event! But we Indians are much ahead of pakis, so should start thinking beyond Pakistan - of course not in terms of attaking using the missle!

make a spectacle by Ganesh on 13 Feb 2009

If you are sure of its performance and if you planned to hit Pakistan with it ,pls launch it from Kanyakumari,so that everyone in India can get a glimpse of its journey.

Wonderful Idea by Ajay, Pune on 13 Feb 2009

Truely award winning idea!

Oooooooooooo by hafeez on 13 Feb 2009

hmm by shiva on 13 Feb 2009

two digit number of versions of brahmos are developed in this decade. Only one of them is failed in its trial.
