India took Australia too lightly: Amarnath

Australia wins

New Delhi Former India cricketer Mohinder Amarnath on Monday criticised Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men for taking a depleted but spirited Australian side too lightly and said the hosts' overconfidence eventually cost them the ODI series.

"I think, Indian team made a mistake by taking their opponents lightly. Overconfidence was the major factor (in the defeat). We did so many mistakes on the field and our bowling was also not upto the mark in the series," Amarnath said.

Australia secured an unassailable 4-2 lead in the seven-match series after their six-wicket win in the sixth one-dayer in Guwahati yesterday, which also dashed India's hopes of toppling Ricky Ponting's side from the top of the ICC rankings. Amarnath was, however, not ready to read much into the series loss and remained hopeful that the team would shrug off the disappointment to rediscover their winning habit soon.

"This loss is certainly worrying, but I would say, there is no need to press the panic button at this moment. We have to play a lot of cricket ahead where the team can perform much better," Amarnath said.

Amarnath, who has played 69 Tests, also congratulated Sachin Tendulkar for becoming the first cricketer in the game's history to score 17,000 runs.

"Sachin is still enjoying his game and has said that he feels proud to play for India. I think, this is a great statement from a great player," Amarnath said.

The 59-year-old former cricketer also advised dashing opening batsman Virender Sehwag, who is struggling to find form in the series, to be more careful in selecting shots in the beginning of his innings.

"Viru is an extremely talented batsman, but he should be more careful in selection of his shots. Team needs him to play some more overs and he should avoid getting dismissed on loose shots," he said.

Amarnath, a member of India's 1983 World Cup winning squad, was not worried about the soaring popularity of Twenty20 cricket, but feels each country should have a large pool of players to deal with the injury problems caused by overdose of cricket.

"Now we are playing too much Twenty20 cricket. I am not saying we shouldn't play it. T20 shouldn't affect players' performance in other versions of international cricket.

Administrators should be careful while planning the fixture to save players from injury or burn out," Amarnath said.

"Instead of rotating same players, the national selectors should give chances to cricketers who are performing well in domestic circuit. We must prepare a bigger pool of players and during selection more emphasis should be placed on fielding," he added.

not much difference by Rakesh on 10 Nov 2009

Well the series was much more competitive from what the scoreline shows apart from the 6th game, in all the other three india came very close on two occasions they were just one hit away from victory ,even the one in which australia scored 250 could have been won. Its fielding that let us down and bowling could have been bit better. So the present status is a combination of bad luck and maybe only a bit of carelessness but Indias were at par with Aussies no matter what the reasult shows

India's performance by dilip mahanty on 10 Nov 2009

It is funny that Tendulkar has to bear the cross always for India's failures. It is as if his 87 international centuries (19 against the best-Australia) don't count nor does the fact that India generally fares well when he gets a century! Cricket is a team game and 10 other players need to perform too to win! Even if Tendulkar scores a century but the bowlers put up a pathetic show and the fielders muff up catches, how can one blame SRT ? The people who criticise Tendulkar just go on emotions( for reasons best known to them) rather than statistical analysis and cold logic!Perhaps these critics suffering from either jealousy or inferior complex are directing their inadequacies( for leading puny, insignificant lives) at an icon who has raised India's image abroad for 2 decades. People say we Indians are like crabs, trying to pull down those climbing up in success! Reading some of the vitriol pouring out against Tendulkar one can readily agree with their views.

The nature of a team by Ozzie on 10 Nov 2009

I agree with you completely Rohit. To put it another way:India = "Team" of StarsAustralia = Star teamAnd Jacob, what a load of rubbish. India was outplayed by what amounts to the second-string Australian ODI team. Plain and simple.

Dont be harsh on Sachin by crciketfan on 10 Nov 2009

Sachin has been a great performer for years and continues to be one. He is after all human and after fielding for 50 overs and blazing 175 runs one can always falter in the choice of stroke. Look at the young guns who are uniformly reckless. There must be a rethink on selection policy. Influenced by the captains kids are rushed into the team with poor results.

Do you know how to count? by Ramelton on 10 Nov 2009

32 of Tendulkar's 45 have won the matches for India. I do not know how to teach you counting. Please do not write beasue the God has given you hands. He/She gave you brains too. Do use it for a change. It has become too common to write about Sachin to ensure taht you are read. Poor poor poor. I really pity you guys. Thank God you are not a Sachin fan. We do not need people like you even watching when he is playing. Enjoy and sulk. Cheers

Indian cricket more political than sport by Jacob Varghese on 09 Nov 2009

India had to lose to Austalia due to white supremacist desire to reign cricket and not India. Indian politics is strongly influenced today by these supremacist who believes in global white dominance and all authority to white supremacist and world as white man's slaves. It is not surprising India lost on the eve of Kevin Rudd's Aussie PM's visit to India a gift of appeasement to a racially prejudiced ruler. Long live Indian cricket run by racist Indian government for racist white world!!

India took Australia too lightly: Amarnath by Rohit Kumar on 09 Nov 2009

Australia lost all of the world class players and played in Indian soil and still won the series. At the same time, Tendulker has acheived personal milestone which is worthless as far as I am concerned. I don't give hoot even if he is scoring 100 centuries. Who cares. To me match-winning is faar more important for the country. Austria is lead by a match winner. A captain who scored centuries after centuries under pressure and won the series after series for his country. We have Tendulkers, Amitabh Bachans who love to score centuries and love to realese 10 movies per year. Nobody remember those centuries - nobody remember those moveis either. We want cricketers who bring glory to our nation, not piling up centuries like nothing happned. It has become synonomous that whenever Tendulker scores, we loose. I pray that he should not score century. I rather have Dhoni and Yuraj to score since they at least try to win the matches.
