Manmohan Singh

New Delhi Worried over the rise in terror incidents in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday asked the global community to extend sustained cooperation for dealing with the menace for ensuring stability in the region.

"We are very worried about the rise of terrorism in our neighbourhood, particularly what is going on in Afghanistan and in Pakistan. We have a vital stake in peace, progress and stability of these countries and other countries of South Asia," Singh said while inaugurating the India Economic Summit here.

He said India has been a victim of terrorism, "unfortunately coming from across our border for the last 25 years" but the world discoverd it as a global problem only after 9/11 (attack on the US).

"I sincerely hope that among the processes, which require sustained international cooperation, dealing with terrorism figures very high on the priorities of all civilized countries of the world," he said.

India is concerned over a sharp rise in deadly terrorist attacks in various parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent past.

The American agency FBI has recently uncovered a plot by nabbing David Coleman Headley who was hired by the Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba to carry out attacks in India.

What is the true intention of the NATO forces in Afghanistan? War on terror is a pretext by iraibakht on 08 Nov 2009

PM%u2019s observation is one sided? He says nothing about the organized state terrorism initiated by the NATO forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unmanned plane attacks in Afghanistan alone has killed more than 1460 innocent civilians most of them women, children attending marriage and funeral parties. And in Iraq 12 lac civilians killed.. for what? He should ask the world community to address the root cause of the issues in Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iraq Can the PM tell, What is the true, exact intention of the NATO forces in Afghanistan. NATO says Al-Qaeda and Taliban are the causes. That is a myth and a lie. Can the PM explain to the world community, why the US was supplying weapons to talibans and treating them as the freedom fighters in the 1980s? What is the reason for the change of friendship? Talibans are horrible; perhaps, the US will not spend hundreds of billions just to civilize them. That is a bluff. What is the secret agenda of the NATO forces and India%u2019s aiding them?

Worried? by Mike Agate on 08 Nov 2009

Not sure why India should be worried! All it has to do is to make sure that its intelligence servives and security apparatus is alert and able to deal with any 'spliover'.For all those well wishers who think that a stable pakistan is good for India are living in cloud cuckoo land.Wake up to the reality that pak is a failed state - and it has been since the day it was created. Its sole purpose for existence is the destruction of India.Stop ALL contact with this EVIL abomination - and concentrate with making India a nation to which the world looks up to.The British and the Americans have realised this, but unfortunately their hands are tied given that all terrorists plots have eminated from that god foresaken country. They are trying, in a false belief, that by appeasing pak they will safeguard themselves.I am not saying that India is perfect, far from it. But at least it does not go around inflicting terror on other because of its problems. This is the crucial difference

india worried over rise of terrorism in Pak-Afghanistan : PM by Premangsu Chowdry on 08 Nov 2009

The doctrine of Al Queda and Taliban, its main operator do not know any international boundary. It is an international phenomenon; with great and active intensity in certain countries, and only as an idea or thought in the minds of the people in many others at present; quiet fellow-travellers may be lurking anywhere, waiting for the success in the countries in turmoil.Under the circumstances, it may be worth considering for us to offer an Army contigent to assist the operations in Afghanistan by the US and the NATO countries. It may play a significant part in bringing peace in Afghanistan and prevent the spectre of a civil war in Pakistan to engulf that unfortunate country ; the latter will be a disaster for the region. The political and internation stature of India will have a face-lift which every nation periodically needs in the world today.

Fighting militants begins at home by K.Vijayakumar on 08 Nov 2009

The Prime Minister has no clue as to how the naxalites can be cornered. Fighting militants begins at home. But to our PM it begins in Afghanistan and Pakistan. His government spends a huge amount of money on security forces and their equipment every year.Yet it has failed to get the better of international militants in Kashmir and home-grown militants elsewhere in India. Why is the media not taking him up on this?

Rightly said by Truth-told on 08 Nov 2009

Very rightly said ! They are blaming China for the Maoist support, question is what were our intelligence, military, political and administration doing to allow this to happen... above all if people are satisfied and loyal will they ever join with your enemy thousands of miles away ? They join because you do not listen to your next door help seeker and do injustice to your own people.

Peace in Pakistan by Bharat on 08 Nov 2009

Pakistan has to show more sincerity to the international community by producing convincing evidence in eliminating terrorism from the soil of pakistan. The following points, if considered by pak. govt., will ensure a peaceful pakistan in the near future: 1) eliminate all terrorists; 2)pak govt. to come forward and voluntarily handover occupied kashmir to Indian Authorities; 3) make a clear international border between pak. and India; 4) make a solemn declaration in front of the international community that terrorism has been wiped from the soil of pakistan; 5) bring the pak. armed forces under the control of a defence minister who in turn will be responsible to the pak. prime minister; 6) Establish an education system followed either in India or USA or UK for pak students. These suggestions can undoubtedly bring peace to the people of pakistn.
