Washington An official US report on human rights across the world said while the Indian Government generally respected the rights of its citizens, serious problems remained in the country, including extra-judicial killings of persons in custody.

"The government generally respected the rights of its citizens, however serious problems remained," said the Indian section of the Human Rights Report of State Department-2008, which was released by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The major areas of concerns identified by the annual report include extra-judicial killings of persons in custody, disappearances, torture and rape by police and other security

forces.

"Investigations into individual abuses and legal punishment for perpetrators occurred but for the majority of abuses the lack of accountability created an atmosphere of impunity," it said.

"Poor prison conditions and lengthy detentions during both pre-trial and trial proceedings remained significant problems. Officials used special anti-terrorism legislation to justify the excessive use of force. Corruption existed at all levels of government and police," it added.

Any action against Religious Extremists? by Amit Vajpeyee on 27 Feb 2009

Did any of the government either BJP, Congress or the Left take action against the relegious extremists like Bajrang Dal, Sri Ram Sene, Shiv Sena etc? These so called self - appointed "Moral Policemen" can hit women in public and boast of their masculanity..!! This is a clear cut abuse of human rights and that too in public. ONLY RESPECTING WILL NOT MAKE INDIA A SAFE HAVEN FOR ALL OF US. THE GOVERNMENT MUST FILE CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST THESE CULPRITS.

Human rights by The All Knowing on 26 Feb 2009

Why doesn't the Indian government rate the U. S. for its human rights violations? Does anyone anywhere take these U. S. statements seriously? It requires a great deal of gumption on the part of the U. S. to come up with such statements about other countries while themselves trampling on human rights whenever and wherever they please.

CITIZEN'S RIGHTS by Niranjan on 27 Feb 2009

IF THE RIGHTS OF THE CITIZENS OF US WERE TRAMPLED SO MUCH, THERE WOULD NOT BE LONG LINES FOR VISAS AT US CONSULATES, THERE WOULD NOT BE TOURIST CENTERS AND CITIES DEPENDING UPON FOREIGN MONEY ONLY. LEFTISTS ARE ALWAYS IRKED AT WHATEVER US SAYS AND APPLAUD WHATEVER CHINA SAYS!!

citizens' rights by Saratchandran on 26 Feb 2009

US report on India is only stating the obvious. I don't think 'naming and shaming' works well with India. Moreover, it comes from the custodians of Guantanamo Bay detention camp!! Pot calling the kettle black!
