Melbourne A 23-year-old Indian man was today arrested and charged in the death of the Indian toddler whose body was found dumped in a Melbourne suburb three days ago.

Dhillon Gursewak, a part-time taxi driver, lived in the same house as three-year-old Gurshan Singh Channa and his parents, but was not related to the family. He has been charged with manslaughter due to criminal negligence, and appeared in an out-of-sessions hearing at St Kilda Road police complex, local media reports said.

“The court heard Dhillon allegedly put the unconscious (Gurshan) Channa in the boot of a car and drove around for three hours. It is alleged he then dumped him on the side of a road without checking if he was alive,” an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) report said.

Dhillon was refused bail and will reappear in the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Sources told PTI that Dhillon’s wife is likely to be charged for helping him dispose of Gurshan’s body, which was found by a council worker on Thursday night, six hours after he disappeared from the rented property shared by his parents with friends and family.

Gurshan and his parents were on holiday in Australia. A total of 12 people lived in the house. An initial autopsy on the child was inconclusive.

A friend of Gurshan’s family said police were on the verge of completing their investigation. “Police are very close to the person... who has done the crime,” the friend said.

The news agency Australian Associated Press (AAP) quoted Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles of the Homicide Squad as saying Dhillon had “placed the child in the boot of his car unconscious but still alive”.

“He then drove up to at least three hours with the child in the boot of the car, eventually stopping at Oaklands Junction, where he placed the child from the boot into the grass and did not check to see if the child was alive, then returned to 28 David Street, Lalor,” Iddles said.

He gave no evidence about how the boy came to be unconscious, AAP said.

Dhillon was arrested at a friend’s house in Mill Park, in Melbourne’s north, at 10 am today. He appeared in court dressed in a white polo shirt, black tracksuit pants and brown thongs and appeared calm throughout the hearing, referring to the dead boy at one stage as “the kid... the kid that died” when asked who lived with him at the David Street address.

AAP said Dhillon had just brought a small truck and was due to start full-time work with a courier company on Wednesday. He lives in Lalor with his wife, and has a daughter in India. The agency quoted Detective Iddles as saying the police opposed Dhillon’s bail because he has few ties to Australia, and is under investigation by immigration officials over allegations that his passport may be false.

Please..... can we stop name calling by Amanda on 09 Mar 2010

OK.... as a 'white Aussie' (married to an Indian...Tamil...) I want to say that INDIANS ARE WELCOME IN MY COUNTRY. I live in a neighbourhood of Sydney where lots of north Indian (mainly Punjabi students) have settled recently. I can only say they are lovely people. We are not all the same, our cultures differ. But thats OK. They face a lot of hardship working long hours to pay their student fees, in low paid rubbish jobs as cooks, cleaners, cab drivers. All they are doing is working hard for a better life. It doesn't make them lesser humans. And remember ... this little toddler in Melbourne... beautiful little boy... he is a victim! I don't care who his murderer is. I have a daughter the same age... and my heart just bleeds for his his mother and father. Lets just get some perspective and maybe use these tragedies to build bridges between our cultures. There are good and bad people in every culture. But there are lots of Australians and Indians who get on VERY well thanks

Toddlers death. by taxpayer on 09 Mar 2010

I would like to know who the real father is of the child. Mother knows a lot more than has been told. I certainly hope the Police question her at great length when she gets back to India. She does not look the slightest bit upset either does the alleged father. Police go very light on women in Australia especially when a child has died.

Roger, as an Aussie who loves India I certainly hope that Nitin's murderer is caught, whether the person is an Aussie, Indian or any other nationality. But you cannot be sure this is a hate crime, and I would personally doubt this to be the case. (Although I acknowledge that there is a racist element with SOME Aussies and that some attacks may have been racially motivated). What evidence do you have that white attackers are released or "dropped home in squad cars"? How would that benefit the Victorian Police force, who are judged on their performance with regard to arresting criminals and keeping them off the streets? Please cite an example where a white attacker was released or dropped home in a squad car and I will follow this up with the police station in question.

Indians killing Indians? by IndianLovesAustralia on 08 Mar 2010

Do you guys think what I am thinking? Why are these incidents mainly involving Punjabis from a rural background? This is bringing shame to the whole Indian community. Even UK suspended student visa applications from North India (Punjabis??) Australia should raise the bar to what kind of people are allowed in. People from rural backgrounds (not only India) need to learn to respect the customs, manners, laws followed in a developed society. At the end of it, I feel Indians are bringing all this on to themselves. Right from the dodgy agents in India to the Indian media and the poor quality of students who go there. Yes, there is tiny little racism but not what it is made out to be. Let us all act responsibly. I went to Thailand recently and even there Thai people did'nt like Indians. Our image is bad even in KL and other cities I visited. Our mannerisms in India do not work elsewhere. We need to observe that first.

Sometimes I wonder why!!! by Raj on 08 Mar 2010

Still Australia should be held responsible as it happened in Australia and the man who did it lives in Australia. Let us declare war against Australia. We are the best in te world and no crime ever happenes in India. India is the only contury where peopl of all casts and tribes are considered equal!!!

Ahh Raj..... by Timmy on 08 Mar 2010

Ahh raj, back into your hut. Just keep dreaming of the freedom, space, cleanliness and wonderful life we lead here in Australia. If it were not as good as i say, all of the Indians who are here would have left, the students would not come back for additional schooling and we would all be clamoring to go to India. As for a war, you cant even have a debate in your parlaiment about womans representation, so declaring war on Australia is a bit of a stretch

to be nice by karansingh on 08 Mar 2010

dear brother raj, i heard u goin to declare war against australia so who is goin with u in this war???? brother be nice with everyone remember one thing don't throw garbage on same peice of land where from u eating without any meaning. it is true indian killed indian ,the thing which is true always tastes bitter. sorry, if said anything wrong but its true.

Hmm.. by Katarina Kolacaric on 08 Mar 2010

What will war solve? No crime in India? Are you nuts? What about the crimes against women? Oppression of widows, often married young and widowed young, condemned to a life of isolation and shunning by society? The murder rate in India is far higher also. You're delusional my friend. This was an Indian immigrant that killed another Indian, it just so happened to be in Australia. I have respect for all nationalities and cultures, however I feel you're taking any opportunity to slander Australia due to our apparent 'RACISM'. Which, incidentally, you are exhibiting in your ludicrous comment.

killing of a child by jmen on 08 Mar 2010

Dear Raj 'Declare war on Australia'?? What planet are you on?? This was an Indian child, allegedly killed by an Indian man, allegedly a man in this country on a false passport. At what point do you think you can blame Australians for that one? Keep going along that track and I can assure you that perhaps the government may take a good hard look at those who apply for entry visas to this country. You better hope you are not one of those applying. that little rant of yours is considered inflammatory, and undesirable. You insult my country for a bad thing allegedly done by one of yours. Grow up.

Don't through Stones if you live in glass houses by Glass Stone on 08 Mar 2010

Oh dear What a tragety. But let us look at the last 4 violent incidents to happen to Indians in Australia. 1 Stabbing in Melboune - unsolved 2.Murder of Indian couple in Griffith NSW - Indian couple convicted 3.Indian man accuses 4 Australians of bashing and setting him alight - result the man is charged with arson 4. and now this. Don't you think it about time India media stopped Aussie bashing and aoplogised to Australia. The real criminals appear to be by Indians against Indians - just like back home!

Very regrettable by Roger on 08 Mar 2010

It is very regrettable that an Indian has been arrested for such a heinous and a barbaric crime. It is shameful that such people are allowed to leave the country without any adequate background checks. It is an insult on the pride of a hardworking and honest Indian who cops the end result of such crimes locally overseas.I think the measures introduced by the British high commission in New Delhi were specifically to check emigration of such low end people. However, majority of the HATE crimes still remain unsolved including the murder of Nitin Garg in Australia. Hope they show the same diligence in bringing to justice " white " perpetrators of such crimes. There is a big vacuum in getting the white attackers to justice. They are either released or dropped home in squad cars.

Hate crimes? by Mark on 09 Mar 2010

I dont understand how you know the remainder of unsolved crimes are hate crimes. Arent they unsolved because we dont know who committed them and therefore dont know their motivations. Estimates place total racially motviated crimes against indians in Melbourne at about 5% of violent instances. So of those that are unsolved (approximately 12 by my counting), statistically 1 could be racist. And btw, I live in Melbourne and know the park in which Nitin Gargin was killed and nobody goes there after dark. Just not safe because its large and has poor lighting and passive surveliance. Crimes in the park have historically be socio-economic/opportunity crimes so likely to be the same, particularly since survielinace shows he wasnt followed. Finally those interracial crimes committed against Indians and Australia have, mostly, be committed by members of the Chinese, Lebanese and Sudanese communities. In fact, there is no recorded incident of racial violence committed by a "white" australia against an Indian in about 12 years. Note the record is based on the victims statement, not the police themselves. I hope this helps clear a few things up.

shmeful by Manoj on 08 Mar 2010

As an indian living here, its horrible to here such news as we are losing a great culture back here for money, vengence and lust

indian man charged over death of 3yr old by gilian on 08 Mar 2010

an opology to the australian public would be good.. saying the boys death was racially motivated was what we call jumping the gun..our police did a good job and under the circumstances should be praised for thier efforts in getting the crime solved so quickly...I think you should all stop and think twice before blaming the australian people every time something happens to an indian resident in our country we have a saying here it is SHIT HAPPENS...

so why is it? by sikh and tired on 08 Mar 2010

so why is it, that the violence inflicted on indians in australia has been committed by indians in australia?

Indian man charged in death of Baby Gurshan by joe from kellyville on 08 Mar 2010

It is ironic that all the attacks committed here in Australia on Indian nationals that have upset your country and labelled us as racist have been committed by Indian nationals themselves. This is the 3rd attack on an Indian national I know that have been linked by police here to another Indian National. I think an aplogy by your press and government is in order

Apology? by Duggo on 08 Mar 2010

Should all Australians expect an apology from India in relation to this outcome? The suspect is an Indian, not a racist Australian. How quickly those that cast aspersions have gone quiet, huh!
