Protesters accused the Victoria Police of using force against them to break up their peaceful sit-in.
The police officials reportedly dragged them out of the tram and punched them brutally.
“There was definitely an amount of excessive force by Victoria Police. There were six policemen to one guy who was sitting down peacefully, who was punched and dragged,” The Sydney Herald quoted a protester Yogesh Malhotra, as saying.
He blamed the police of using force and pressure tactics to compel the agitators to break their protest.
“While he (security official) was making his announcement we were already surrounded by 200 policemen and after a while, six of the guys (police), they came and they ramrodded one of the guys, they dragged him,” Malhotra said.
While the Indian community is claiming that the recent attacks on Indian students were racially motivated, Victorian Premier John Brumby said Victoria was still a safe destination for students by world standards.
However, Brumby admitted that the attacks were unacceptable
"There have been some racially based attacks, and they're completely repugnant and unacceptable,'' he said.
"Everybody should take a step back and just calm down now, I guess, just take a step back and we'll get on top of this issue,” he added.

The Australian media and Indian organizations in Australia want more than anything to focus the attacks to newly arrived students. Not long ago the ex-president of the AMA,Dr Mukesh Haikerwal was viciously bashed near his home and was lucky to survive.Australian police cannot guarantee the safety of their own citizens - they are deployed in revenue raising exercises such as testing drink affected drivers and speeding fines.Indians have found out the facts on this country the hard way.Do not listen to education agents, politicians or expatriate Indians - they will all lead you astray. The only reason that the 457 visa was extended to Indians is that this country is almost broke, has severe social problems, unemployment and lives in hope that China continues to buy its resources.Seek education elsewhere - there are no bargains to be found in Australia.
The "peace marchers" actually caused criminal damage, throwing shoes and rocks at the stained glass windows of the station they were protesting outside of. They will not garner any sympathy by blocking transportation for people who might have agreed with their plight. Any police department in any major city would break up a similar protest in a similar way. If they had been caucasian Australian unionists, the police would have brought in horses and riot squad. I wonder, how does India deal with muslim protest in Kashmir? The students had the police commissioner down there talking to them personally.Of course, I doubt this comment will be posted because the Indian media is making so much $$$ hyping this up. I don't care, that $2.5 billion Indian students bring in is money that we could live without. Prefer not to, but when it comes down to it, it is a drop in the ocean of our 1.2 trillion GDP.
I guess the students are young 18 yrs - 20 yrs and afraid of their future .it takes some time to get the mturity and courage .Indian s have a complex about the white skin because of history that they ruled us .Many US born indians are not even aware about the gandhi nehru independence etc hence dont know that they are supposed to conside the white as better .I strongly suggest that history need not be taught as such .It has to be manipulated to give an image that Indians were never ruled .only occupied .In the glorification of gandhi we tacitly show tyhe rule by them .\not necessary at all .Change the history and you will change the future !!
show solidarity with our countrymen SHUN AUSTRALIA Lets hope and pray Shravan makes a speedy recovery and makes his family strongShame on you Aussies
This is a reply to the comment by someone who justifyes this attacj on our kide by saying that we are worse than the Aussies. You know , you are a God Damn Idiot that is why these Aussies can do such attrocities againt our kids in Australia with such impunity, India is the only country in the world where 50% of the educational institutions and the Govt Jobs are reserved for people in the so called lower castes and the so called higher castes themselves are a minority in most states, so check your facts. Everybody has been allowed to live freely in India, I am also a minority, I am a Sikh so dont give me this bullshit, you dont like India so go live in Australia and they will treat you like a brown dog.
i'm not ozi or either indian, i live in melb. those protestors blocking the road for public transportation, main road, swanston st, where all the trams is there. offcourse its annoying. everytime we have peace protestors in melbourne, they have their own place for protest such as fed square, which is not interupting public facility. but these indian student don't know how to behave, they sit in the middle of the road and blocking the public transport. the oz police do what they supposed to do, they did the right thing.there is nothing to do with profits that Au government get from indian student, if they don't want to study in Au, they can choose another country. Au don't beg for students.
The United States would be a good choice for these students.Indian are highly respected and the colleges are far better than what Australia can offer. Australians are uneducated and ignortant especially in this global and competitive world. Their ignorance and is shown for all the world to see!! What do you expect of Criminal’s and misfits banished from Britain and send to Australia long ago.
Indian students protest in Australia against racist attack is quite reasonable. We are civilised Nations these attacks are uncvilised. There may be some labour/unemployments problems in that country. It is Australian govt's duty to sort it out and keep their citizens happy.Australians should realise that Students coming from other countries are coming for education purpose and they are their guests rather attacking students they should help them to live in that country happily they shoul help them to find out some part time Job and complete the course. This will enhance the reputation of australia and australians. It is Australian govt's duty to protect the students coming from other countries including Indans if they can not then they should not issue the visa for studies. Our govt also should take some purpose ful deplometic steps and seek safety and security of our peapole
It does not feel good indians having the taste of their own medicine, discrimination against minorities has been rampent among higher caste hindus in india. And I would say, most indians in the western world try to impose their home grown values on other people. I would request them try to integrate with the local people who give them livelihood, and if the indians think that india is great then why do not they leave these western countries and do something for their own, instead of boot licking the western world for every penny.
Pavan - did you know that international students bring in more money then tourism to Australia? You know how much money this brings into Australia? I'm an international student here in Melbourne, from Canada. We pay 3 times more then Australian students (fair enough, as we are internationals) - but we can't even get a concession card for the bus... International students are taken advantage of here, as an easy stream of revenue. I'm not saying the protesters were right or wrong - but Australia should give it a fair listen, as these international students are pumping a lot of money into your economy.
Indian Govt. is soft pedaling the entire issue. Indian govt. Should Warn Australia strictly. Raise the issue at a higher level by calling back our Indian Ambassador to india. Moreover Indian Govt Should stop the Australian universities from campainging in India. Instead they can go for Canada, Europe and New Zealand.
Australians surely should not forget their past. Definitely Indian students are generating profits to Australian Govt. (neary) 20,000 students are studying. Its better we avoid sending Indians to pursue Higher Education at Australia. Indians can choose Canada, Sweden and other European countries and New Zealand. Where there is mutual respect as Individuals and respect each other.Indian Govt. is soft pedaling the entire issue. Indian govt. Should Warn Australia strictly. Raise the issue at a higher level by calling back our Indian Ambassador to india.
Is our PM losing sleep for what is happening to Indian students in australia. Or does he lose sleep only when his vote banks are in trouble. Indian students should just come back and no one should go to australia for studies. Indian student should also demand there money back from the universities where they have studied. We have hardly heard our PM speaking against this.
while the attacks on the indian students are deplorable the people who have organised the protest in front of the parliment have done more harm than the the very attacks.the australian govt has limitations. they will handle the attackers if caught only with kid gloves.this is so with any other democratic country.the wisest thing would be to forgive and forget. any more publicity will be fodder for some disgruntled youngsters.
Indians should just abandon Australian educational institutes. There's a Sanskrit saying that even if the crow shits on Elephant's head, elephant doesn't get humiliated but the crow's lineage and culture comes out in the open.
I think India should take steps that hurt Australia. They can't make money from our students and then target them. Indian govt. should issue an advisory against travel to that country and banks should refuse study loans. Derecognize Austrailan degrees. Admission to quality technical institutes in India should include paid seats and the money raised can be used to set up more facilities here. Stop patronising foreign destinations.
Being a seafarer visited australia, have seen in TV how they make fun of Indian, as if they are a superior race what they are not, uneducated, uncultured bunch of criminals they are, no doubt in that. in country like US
DEAR EDITORI HAVE LIVED IN BAHRIAN FOR THE LAST 23 YEARS AND ALL THESE YEARS THE AUSSIES ARE THE MOST ARROGANT RACISTSTHE INDIAN GOVT SHOULD SHOW SPINE AND CALL BACK THE CONSUL GENERAL IN MELBOURE IF NOT THE HIGH COMMISSIONER
India, though big in size and population, is treated as an impotent country by the world at large. Therefore, they are ill treated and humiliated without any fear of their mother country. The Australians cannot dare to attack a Chinese student as any such incident will trigger very strong and deterent action from the Chinerse Govt. The protests lodged by our PM with the Austrailian Govt. will not given any importance and will be simply thrown in dustbin by the Aus. Govt
the racial attacks are not surprising knowing full well the pedigree of the Australians - crimminals banished from England. we have seen them display their boorishness on the cricket field time and again especially when they are in danger of losing.
150,000 students each spending an average of Rs 200,000/- in australia, contributing to australian economy to the tune of Rs. 30 billion. and in return what we have got? Thibk of it, cannot india imaprt the same education without the racial humiliation and with much less cost.
PM has telephoned and asked Australian PM not to attack minorities like Christains and Muslims. Others he does not care
Aussies are a bunch of arrogant racist lot, replacing the attitude of the British of the imperialist days, without an empire. Indians are themselves to blame for this attitude of the aussies towards them to a great extent. Examples being: 1. The way the Indian cricket team was destroyed by the arrogant coach hired by the BCCI, 2. the way recently in IPL matches in the Calcutta team the aussie cricket coach manipulated to replace Ganguly as the Captain by a worthless australian, with the help of the traitor Shahrukh, owner of the team, whom our immature and stupid female fans and media never tire of eulogizing! 3. The way Bhajji was treated by the Australian arrogant captain in Australia for false allegations of racism. But for the strong stand taken by Dhoni and the team members, Indians would have been humiliated there also. Cricket losses to India has developed hatred against Indians seen in the hate bloggers. Aussies need to be paid back in their own coin, and classed as Racists.
I am a singaporean student studying in melbourne and was there when the victorian police started to beat and manhandle the indian student protestors. the worst part of the entire episode were the large number of white bystanders who were shout racist remarks like "beat the dogs!" and I even saw the police exchange smiles and friendly words with them without even so much as a reprimand. The racism that these students are protesting against has become blatantly evident.
Did you hear the name Nalanda, Takhashila? Did you hear the name Max Muller - 1000s of people came to India and got enlightened - because in India we say "Atithi Devo Vavah", Guset is like God.Your ancestors not only robbed us in name of East India Company - they divided our society, using cast and religion as major tools. "Gurukuls" were replaced with hostels, and you know what is hostel culture - alcohol, indisciplene. The Gurus used to give knowledge to child, today it is marketing.Unfortunately you have been trapped in your own web - so please take steps and no lip service. You bent laws to use qualified labour and accuse our students, just imagine what will happen to your economy without them. These people had come with hopes of seeing a civilised world and what they saw - brutality, cruelty at its peak. Bring your house in order - then preach what students must be doing.
