Dubai, January 28: An Indian was among three South Asians who were sentenced to death by a Saudi Arabian court for the murder of an elderly Saudi woman in Jeddah.

The three -- Haleema Nissa Cader, a Sri Lankan, Naushad, her Indian husband from Tamil Nadu and K M S Bandaranaike, also a Sri Lankan -- were arrested in November 2005 in connection with the armed burglary and her murder, Arab News said in a report on Monday.

They have seven days to appeal the verdict.

Indian officials in Jeddah said they may file a mercy petition to the Saudi King for the Indian.

The case has been going on for some time, but we have not received any official notice from the Saudi authorities, an Indian official told PTI from Jeddah.

“Once we get some official confirmation, we can file a mercy petition to the Saudi King as has been the case in all such cases,” he said, In another case a mercy petition had been sent following which a retrial was ordered, he said.

An oral verdict was delivered in June last year, and a 15-page written verdict was given on January 20, the report said, adding that Jeddah High Court Judge Faisal Al-Sheikh confirmed the verdict on Sunday.

Five other Sri Lankans, including two women, were sentenced to five years in jail and will also receive 500 lashes for their role in the crime.

The verdict has been slammed by Amnesty International, which has accused authorities of imposing the death sentences without proper judicial procedure.

“The accused were not given legal assistance at any time, even during trial, and are believed to have confessed under duress,” Amnesty said in a statement.

Murderers must be hanged to death by Sakti on 29 Jan 2008

Murderers must be hanged to death. Tit-for-tat. If they really did murder, they deserved death. If not, then Saudi govt must be punished. Let they appeal and fight the case.

freaking Saudis by vishal on 29 Jan 2008

Everybody knows the bullshit that passes for judicial process in such countries. The south Asians are treated like animals and i am 100 percent sure this trial was fixed from the get go. But I doubt if our spineless Indian governement can force saudis to back up. Heck sometimes the saudis don't even think twice before cocking a snook to the Americans. They cound't care less about us Indians. To them we are dirt.

Stop this! by ASB on 29 Jan 2008

Who are u to judge on what service he did to India? Are you sure that he is guilty when he did not even have a proper lawyer and trial. Armed robbery does not deserve life to be taken away.It is people like you who demean an Indian. A Western has never been executed in Saudi? Ask yourself why? Dont tell me they do not commit crime.
