Australia

Melbourne A student from Andhra Pradesh who was among four students from India, assaulted by a group of teenagers this week, is battling for life in a hospital in Melbourne.

Shravan Kumar, the 25-year old student is in a critical condition, said one of his close friends who also had a narrow escape during that attack.

"Doctors are still unsure if Kumar will survive and if he does, he will lose his vision or memory", Kumar's friend, Sinivas Gandhi, said.

A group of teenagers attacked four Indian students while they were partying in Melbourne over the weekend, leaving Kumar in a serious condition. Sinivas said the attackers abused them and said they should go back to India.

They were hit with a screwdriver by the attackers who apparently were in drunken state.

While three were discharged after medical treatment, Kumar is still fighting for his life.

Kumar, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, came to Australia two years ago and was a student of automotive engineering at Cambridge International College in Melbourne.

Sinivas said, the police had asked them to take care of their own security and even said that they "can't go on protecting each and everyone".

He said they were also asked to change their residence in a bid to protect themselves.

Violent attacks on Indians have been growing over the last few years and has raised serious concern for aspiring students who wish to study in Australia.

Attack on Kumar is a second in a month. Earlier, a

21-year old student, Sourabh Sharma, was bashed up in a train.

Victorian Police who have played down racial factor in such attacks have announced measures like dispatching a police team to India to create awareness among aspiring students coming to study in Australia.

However, Federation of Indian Student Association (FISA) has criticised police for doing nothing. Gautum Gupta, FISA's member said "why can't police do something in Victoria. Why we can't see some effective measures by them here only for the culprits rather than going to India to advice students there."

"They need to come out with stricter measures for such culprits including media campaigns similar to what they have as 'No to domestic violence," Gupta suggested.

who is more racist?? by Raj on 29 Oct 2009

"The whites in Ausralia are strongly racist "the hypocrisy by some on this site is comical. a racist blasting another for being racist!the comments from indians here are so prejudiced and racist that we come off looking very very bad and not deserving of modern world status.

Wow by Dave on 06 Jun 2009

There sure are some people standing on shaky moral ground in here. Every society has criminals and racists, this is not an excuse but a reality. However nearly every comment on here is racist or discrimination based... bash innocent Australian's whom are India. Why you are sounding just like the idiots that attacked these innocent students in Australia. And I love the... we must remember that Australia does not have a social case... yeh thank god for that. Look how people are discriminated against within India based on their own background or lack of wealth. Sure not racist but it is discrimination. The simple fact is no country is perfect. Everyone would be well served to sort there own countries out before throwing stones at others

Holier than thou racists LOL by Ricki Coughlan on 31 May 2009

I'm Australian living in Sydney and was going to write something supportive for the families of the victims of these bashings here. After reading all of the comments here I can see that you're as much racist as the thugs behind the cowardly attacks. Wake up to yourselves racists, the world wont tolerate you in any country. Nor will we tolerate you when you write racist comments feigning disgust at the racism of those in other countries. Most Australians are not racist and comments about "convict ancestors" LOL you've got no idea you brainless hotheads.

No respect! by ramesh on 28 May 2009

As an expat indian who was a student in north america not so long ago, I can say with no doubt, that the Indian embassies or the voiceless officials there can do nothing for any Indian citizen in trouble. The most they will do or are likely to do is to send a memo of some sort and give you responses like 'we are looking into this matter'. The same old goverment mentality that permeates our govt. depts and the old and bored looking officials who take great joy in giving you the run around. Let's face it, if you're Indian living in foreign land, cover your own backside, because the Indian govt. or its duly appointed officials can't do anything or won't even if they can. But then, in most cases, they command very little respect when they go speak to concerned officials like the police in North America or elsewhere. It is sad, but true. But we Indians are resilient and will overcome hurdles without the assistance of the govt. and thier hindrance, like we do back home in India.

The weak will alwaya be attacked. by Ram Nath Babu on 28 May 2009

Will these Australian rouges dare to attack an Amercian student or any one from Europe? No, they will not, because they now the repurcussions. Our government is a weak government, cannot protect its citizens, whether they live within India or outside. Yet we once again voted this government for another five years. Perhaps, we do not deserve anything better than these kinds of treatment.

I AGREE AUSTRALIANS ARE A BUNCH OF THUGS,DECENDENTS OF CONVICTS,THEY DESTROYED THE LOCALS COMPLETLY,THEY ALL SHOULD BE SENT BACK TO EUROPE AND LET THE ABORIGINES CONTROL THE COUNTRY WHICH BELONGS TO THEM LEGALLY ANY WAY. H PADMESH

Indians students abroad by Sahil on 28 May 2009

Why can't we stop Indian students going to Australia ?? And if they still want to go, no one should do anything then ? I have lived abroad and I know the how indian students behave out of India. They think that its India but they forget its not.

fragmented society by sp on 28 May 2009

It may not be right to generalize Australians as such. Every society has its own scum. Ont the other hand one must be aware that a social structure is lacking in Australia. The miscreants are products of a failed society. When children are brought up in a dysfunctional society they choose violence and bullying to fill their emptiness. Indian students ought to be careful. Don't travel alone and avoid displaying wealth or other behaviour that attract attention.Stay away from pubs especially on friday nights.

Racist scum by Hero Vaz on 27 May 2009

I don't know why Indians have to go to a third rate country to study. The whites in Ausralia are strongly racist and a large number are descendants of the worst British criminals. What can you expect of such people?

Thrash australians in India by Indian_India on 27 May 2009

We should drag the australians who visit India on the streets , strip them and neat them so bad that they forget their names , thats the only way to teach these thugs and criminals , I abhor Gandhi so much , I just hate his principles

It does not pay to be meek in convict country! by Indian on 27 May 2009

Indians need to shed their image of a docile and meek community immediately.Fact is bullies and rowdy elements always look for easy targets, they will not dare target Pakis and the Muslim community for example because they are known to retaliate in kind.A beginning can be made by thrashing a few Australians in India.....this will let them know how Indians feel in their own convict resettlement nation usurped from the poor Australian aborigines. The convict descendants cannot be civilised but they can be certainly disciplined and made to respect force.Imagine the Australian police saying, they cannot protect each and everybody! Will they dare say this if the victims were of European origin? Racism is alive and kicking in Australia, a savage nation of ex-cons and squalid criminals.
