London, February 17: An Indian student, studying law at Newcastle, has been jailed and faces deportation to India for making indecent exposure and sexual assault.

Amit Shivrain, 26, was jailed by magistrates in Newcastle in north England, for four months and will be on the sex offenders' list for seven years. He was in the UK on a student visa.

Shivrain allegedly attacked a woman as she walked to work and exposed himself near a primary school in Newcastle.

Paul Doney, prosecuting lawyer, said: "He stopped her to ask for the time. Because she was not wearing a watch she stopped to get her mobile phone from her rucksack."

While she was activating the phone, Shivrain allegedly exposed himself. The woman walked away and phoned the police when she got to work.

The woman identified him when he was placed in a video line-up, and said in a statement that the incident had left her very distressed and frightened to go out alone, reports from Newcastle said.

Shivrain's lawyer Gregg Stephens said this "moment of madness" had ruined his client's life. He said his client had come to the UK to study to be a lawyer and that he would now have to return to India.

"We have got a man of previous good character with a good upbringing, he has come to this country to study and pursue a career in law. He fully appreciates the way he behaved was unacceptable," Stephens said.

"There is no chance of him getting a career as a lawyer or a barrister now. He has already punished himself as a result of committing this offence. It seems that his visa is unlikely to be renewed. The defendant has effectively ruined his life in a moment of complete madness," he said.

throw away the keys by vishal on 19 Feb 2008

Actually India should refuse to take him too. Or just take him directly from Airport to jail. If he is let go what is the guarantee that he won't do it again ? This time to an Indian woman ? Moron ! Kick his ass !

Indecent Behaviour by Kerisnaji Rao on 18 Feb 2008

It is a great pity that this has happened to this young man. I do not condone his behaviour but ask myself why he exposed himself to this women.I don't know how long he has been studing in New Castle. He is probably not suited for this Law study. The studies may be too hard for him.England can be a lonely cold place. This young man needs help not imprisonment.Whats wrong with the British legal system ? This young man obviously comes from a good family. If he returns to India he will need help. Law is not an easy subject, especially English Law.He has broken the law but his behaviour warrants treatment not imprisonment.I am sorry to see young Indian students getting into trouble like this in foreign countries. This does not however reflect on all Indian students.I don't think so.

Cancell his passport and put him in Jail by Rohit Bihari on 18 Feb 2008

This is shamefull. He has tarnished the image of India. That guy must be taught a lesson afterall its not Mumbai, where some people tore the clothes of a Girl on New Year and one Political leader came in the support of those goons or a girl from other state was killed before gateway of India in broad day light...These kind of people think that every place is mumbai and they can do anything..

Punishment is ok but his visa must not be cancelled

Cancell his passport and put him under watch list in India too by Abhijit on 18 Feb 2008

All sane Indians should condemn this nymphomaniac. Brit Govt is just right to put this guy behind bar. UK is not UP, Bihar or Delhi. Indian Govt should cancel his passport and bring him back to India to minimize the chance to malign India’s reputation abroad. UK must not allow such "students" to enter in that country again (once he finishes his jail term). Indian Govt also should keep this report to save Indian women from such predators.

What a pity! by Abhijit on 18 Feb 2008

What a pity, that we still produce such Dr, as this Patil. All sane Indians should condemn this nymphomaniac. Brit Govt is just right to put this guy behind bar. UK is not UP, Bihar or Delhi and it must not allow such "students" to enter in that country again (once he finishes his jail term). Indian Govt also should keep this report to save Indian women from such predators.

UK is right to punish this spoilt brat by B. B. Goel on 18 Feb 2008

This is a very common incident that such spoilt brats of rich parents are going abroad to buy degrees. Their feudal mentality and upbringing prompts them to think that they can get away with anything even in UK and US as they are so used to in India. UK is right to put this maniac behind the bar. Now he will learn what law means behind the bar under the supervision of police officials.

We all know where Mr. Srinivasan is arriving at… by Savithri Shankar on 18 Feb 2008

We all know where Mr. Srinivasan is arriving at…After all one cannot blame him for asking the lady to EXCUSE that boy. Well said Mr. Srinivasan and there is no point in blaming as that is OUR CULTURE. What Swati said is correct. He thought that it is India where he can do and get away with whatever he does to WOMEN. This is mainly due to OUR SO-CALLED CULTURE where women are treated as Objects. We need hundreds of Raja Ram Mohan Rais and thousands of Dr. MuthuLakshmi Reddy, the first woman doctor of India, first Woman legislative member (MLC) of Madras Assembly, noted social worker and philanthropist, and the lady who founded the world famous Cancer Institute at Adyar, Chennai. After all when noted freedom fighter like Mr. Sathya Murthy Iyer said in Madras Assembly that Devadasi System should NOT be abolished as it is against OUR GREAT CULTURE!!! One can only empathize with Mr. Srinivsasan for his ignorance and inability to understand the value of a woman when Mr. Sathya Murthy him self spoke out of reality. It is still in Madras Assembly records the quotes of Dr. Muthu Lakshmi’s response to Mr. Sathya Murthy Iyer “ yes, all along females from our caste were Devadasis, and from now on in order to protect OUR CULTURE, why NOT Mr. Sathya Murthy’s caste people do that job to protect our GREAT culture…

Indian student in UK jailed for indecent behaviour by Raj on 17 Feb 2008

This is called Law, here if a politician's son or someone had exposed himself, he would never be bothered with, the father paying his bail and ensuring the girl also got raped for bringing in the police and if were any other rich person he would have walked away with bail, but nevertheless got his barrister's with honors and started a successful practice too. One has seen how difficult it is to escape the law in such countries, even Sanjay Gandhi had a tough time doing that nothwithstanding Nehru's standing in that country.

Nice lesson in law by B. B. Goel on 18 Feb 2008

You are so right... I hope this chap will now know what law means in real sense..

Sportmen lead Indians by example by Jolly on 17 Feb 2008

I am sure with Harbajan is going to be honoured after his 'Teri maa ki..'public statements overseas with postal stamp, there will be hundreds of students like this one going to behave in the most uncivilized way, expecting honours from India and Indian Govt. I suggest a Padma Shri if not a stamp for this student for keeping up the present Indian culture in all its glory! Long live racisam and molestations against women for which the present India is well known around the world!

Modern India honours such people! by Dileep on 17 Feb 2008

I think the Indians should confine themselves to to Delhi (rape capital of India) and Mumbai (racist and molestors Inc)for their immoral and indecent acts. It will not be tolerated in a modern civilized place like England. I read that Indian Govt. has short-listed Harbajan Singh ("Maa ki...' fame) for a New postal stamp. There was no hue and cry from Indians (including Women forums, Andolans and Shabana Azmi)or even a muted comment when Harbajan openly admitted to using this indecent filthy 'galli' publicly in Australia. May be the Indian Govt. will plan to release a stamp on this indecent student also!

indecent behaviour by srinivasan on 17 Feb 2008

What a fate a moment of foolishness has landed the person into.Had the lady ignored the incident as an inmatured act of the student and gave him her piece of mind the matter would have ended there. But one has to appreciate the woman for her exposure of the indecent behaviour will act as a restraint among the student community in indulging in such abnormal behaviour.

OMG by chris on 18 Feb 2008

Spot on sister! by Ashamed Indian on 17 Feb 2008

I agree with you totally. Gone are the days of Swami Vivekananda when he addressed everyone 'brothers and sisters'.

Stop Cribbing and try improving it by Rammy on 17 Feb 2008

Stamps should be made of you peoples, cribbing image. And also a statement saying Glory be to this Indian who cribbed about his own country and did not put any effort to better it in any way.Note: This crime is done by westerners too. I do not think their country name is attached to them.
