Indian success more to do with luck than skill: Ponting

Melbourne, November 18: Blissfully unaware of the series bashing that awaited him in India, Australian captain Ricky Ponting considered Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men better-suited for Twenty20 cricket rather than Tests after their World Cup triumph in South Africa.

Recalling the success of Indian team in the Twenty20 World Cup, Ponting wrote in his book 'Captain's Diary 2008' that Dhoni was a "classic example" of a player who could damage the opposition in the shortest version, which offers little scope for a batsman to showcase his technique.

"Teams that are outclassed in five-day matches and even 50-over games are much more competitive in Twenty20. India offer a good example of this. The shorter the format of the game the more dangerous they become," Ponting said.

"Some of their batsmen -- Yuvraj Singh and M S Dhoni are classic examples -- can hurt you more in shorter games, because their is less opportunity to find ways of picking apart their techniques," he while adding that "Form in Twenty20 really doesn't count for all that much".

Having said so, Ponting also dismissed India's successful journey to the T20 world title, attributing it to more luck and little skills.

"I am not as cynical about the game as I once was, but some negatives still nag at me. There is so much luck involved in this shortened form of the game; it's not always going to be the best team that wins. I guess that's true of all sport but it seems to be accentuated here... Little wonder, then, that the tournament has been unpredictable, with many locals stunned that previously unbeaten South Africa was eliminated so comfortably by India," he said.

Dhoni, however, went on to prove Ponting wrong as he led India to a thumping 2-0 win in the recent four-Test series. The Tasmanian right-hander said he wondered why Dhoni had complained against him about sledging during the a one-dayer in Kochi last year.

"After the game, at the captain's media conference, MS Dhoni revealed that he had complained to the umpires about what he called 'harsh' language that I and some other Australian players had reputedly used on the field. I really don't know where he was coming from. The umpires didn't have a problem, match referee Chris Broad didn't have a problem and I wonder whether Dhoni was trying to somehow square the ledger after the controversy that engulfed S Sreesanth and Harbhajan Singh in Kochi."

Ponting said Dhoni's behaviour was rather strange as Broad had lauded his team's approach towards the game.

"I actually sat on the plane right behind Chris Broad, and he made a point of turning around and congratulating me for the way out team approached the game".

Sour grapes by Johjn on 18 Nov 2008

The difference between Dhoni and Ponting are,Dhoni is a quick learner and he tries to learn from the losses and consolidates on the wins. It's not that India never lost under Dhoni, remember Dhoni was the only player to be successful against Mendis in Sri Lanka. The Oz and England are scared of Yuvi, when Yuvi gets going then they all have to run for cover.Though Yuvi UNLUCKILY has not been consistent but look when ever he score more than 20 he gets between 70 and century. These guys dont know how to handle Dhoni and Yuvi so they are beating around the bush.Thats what I do when I don't know how to handle things. Very human. They should congratulate and appreciate the clean hitting of Yuvi and the follow throughs of Dhoni. They have no sportsman ship.Chris Broad will hate India because his son was sent to the dry cleaners during 20 -20 by Yuvi.Thats the reason why Gambhir had to sit out.

Of whiners, cry babies and sour loosers by Neil Razdan on 18 Nov 2008

Ponting is not alone, all the white skinned pigs are that way. They lose, then they throw temper tentrums, and then they hold their breath till they turn blue. LOL

Cry babies or Sour loosers by Neil Razdan on 18 Nov 2008

STONE THEM by Uma Shankar on 18 Nov 2008

Next Time, Throw STONES at Aussie players when they play in India. We do not want RECISTs playing in India. BTW: PONTING is a ordinary cricket player. He can't play a simple reverse swing delivery.

WHITE NIGGER by Uma Shankar on 18 Nov 2008

PONTING IS A WHITE NIGGER. ALL WHITES ARE RACISTS UNLESS OTHERWISE PROVED. MANY WHITES THINK THAT QUEEN VICTORIA IS THE RICHEST PERSON IN THE WORLD!!

Ponting by Dinesh on 18 Nov 2008

So now ponting's team should be much more dangerous in T20/20 as they have been outclassed in test and one dayers by Dhoni's men. Good luck ponting. Keep day dreaming.

Ponting by DEV on 18 Nov 2008

Ponting SHUT UP, INTROSPECTION IS THE KEY, WHEN WILL YOU AUSSIES LEARN TO PRAISE THE OPPONENT WHEN THE OPPONENT IS BETTER THAN YOU, IS IT BCOS OF THE CHIP YOU CARRY ON YOUR SHOULDER( BRITISH SAYING). YOUR TEAM WAS BEATEN FAIRLY IN ALL DEPARTMENTS AND PERSISTENTLY , YOU SAID THAT IN INDIA. THIS INTERVIEW OF YOURS IS EVIDENCE THAT YOU GUYS CANNOT BE TRUSTED ( KNOW HARBHAJAN SAGA). EVEN A 4 YR CHILD CAN SEE THIS PHENOMENON OF SOUR GRAPES , ARE YOU GOING INSANE, DUE TO LOSS TO INDIA. YOU NEED TO BE MORE SMARTER THAN THAT , YOUR TEAM SHRINK IS NOT DOING WELL IS MY ACESSMENT WHEN YOU SAY INDAI WAS LUCKY.DONT WORRY INDAI WILL BE BACK IN YOUR LAND AND WE SAY WE WILL DEFEND THE TROPHY THERE, AND SHUT YOU UP

If thats what you call luck ..... by SoftWords BigStick on 18 Nov 2008

Yes, Dhoni is lucky, thats why he consistenty beat the Aussies in two tests in the latest series.Sour grapes, Mr Ponting ?By the way ... I dont see any Aussies posting comments on this article ? Not worthy of defending, is it ??Cheers mate !!

'Captain's Diary 2008' by Som on 18 Nov 2008

Better he shoudl have named the book as 'Cheat Captain's Diary 2008'.I think the best way is to ignore his book in total, lets not discuss else he gets free marketing.

thanx for reminding his words by ashok pai on 18 Nov 2008

just proves what ponting stands for. his words have been empty chest thumping. australia is nothing without the 2 great bowlers, and batsman like gilly. this also proves an important point that broad is biased. if he approved of aussie taunts and their cunning stretegy to "hit and run" - then indians stand vindicated about chris broad being prejudiced. watson if he had shut is filthy orifice - gambhir would not have barged into him.

Ponting's points ! by VJ on 18 Nov 2008

Mr.Ponting, your pointing is well-taken, however with all the skills that Oz seem to possess, why is it that you get tamed by Indians again and again ? If India is lucky, that means Oz is unlucky, and not skillful enough, is it ? Well, thanks admission !

autralian Losers by arnab on 18 Nov 2008

What more can you say of those Sore Losers :-) , dont you realise ponting that when you dont cheat you lose , its you and your team which needs help :-)

Indians are lucky by Sridhar on 18 Nov 2008

If we interpret Ponting's statement, I can tell it in a different way. Australia has been lucky for so long to win in Test matches and One day internationals because other teams were not so lucky.

Indian success more to do with luck than skill: Ponting by Hemant Amlani on 18 Nov 2008

Well ponting, call it LUCK if you want but you should know that LUCK is always CLEAN and not CHEAT so at least WE are CLEAN WINNWERS unlike CHEAT WINNERS like you people

Indian success more to do with luck than skill: Ponting by Hendry on 18 Nov 2008

Well ponting, if you call it a LUCK then may it be but you should know that that LUCK is always CLEAN and not CHEAT so at least WE are better called LUCK WINNERS than CHEAT WINNERS like you are

Indian success more to do with luck than skill: Ponting by nobleguy on 18 Nov 2008

The Australian team has proved once again how bad losers they are. And then they involve the umpires also by saying that they had no problems with their sledging. The offspring of hardcore convicts left on this piece of land by England, how can we expect good behaviour from you? You are a piece of shit and will remain a piece of shit. Go find out who fathered you and then you talk about us!

Aussies by prashant on 18 Nov 2008

sour grapes.. nothing else.. you lost pal.. period.

Indian Success...:Ponting by nobleguy on 18 Nov 2008

Ricky Ponting, the master sledger is used to train his team in sledging techniques only because they have forgotten how to hold a bat. And yet they say that no umpire ever had problems with their sledging, with special mention to Chris Broad. Does he want to prove that all these umpires are racial? Learn to be ashamed of your onfield behaviour Mr. Thick Skin. Learn to be humble. Don't forget about the way you were bashed here. Poor Australia, they have such an idiot captain.

Stupid Australian Comments by Azher ul Hasan on 18 Nov 2008

The kangaroos are always been arrogant. They do not hesitate to make thiird rated remarks out of their uncontrolled anger and frustration while they see Asian countries winning over them.Mr. Ponting, please recollect the fact that luck only favors those who puts sincere efforts.

PONTING GOING MAD by NNITIN OMPRAKAASH on 18 Nov 2008

DEAR PONTING I SUGGEST YOU TO GET REST FOR FEW MONTHS GET YOUR MIND BACK O WORK I ALSO SUGESST YOU TO FOCOUS ON TEAM INSTEAD THIS TYPE OF COMMENTSTHIS WILL HELP YOU IN NEXT GAMES AND ALWAYS REMBER THAT YOU CA NOT BE ALWAYS ON TOP.

Ponting-A bad Pointing finger by G.T.Baliga on 18 Nov 2008

Ponting, it seems that your luck is diminishing, stop pointing fingers at others.Recent test in Sydney, you were pointing finger at yourself, over riding the umpire's decision. Whole seydney test was full of sledging, umpires wrong and one sided decision and your players behaved very rudily, finally you won the test by hook or crook. In fact this test was one of the worst in criket history. Most of Australians showed their true color. This test should have been nullified or cancelled from the record book.

For Maharashtra by Ravindra bapat on 18 Nov 2008

If you look at sheer talent of players, probably there would be not player comming from elsewere in india, because there is so much of cricket culture in mumbai and Maharashtra alone. If we remove the reservation system then probably the other states in india can shutdown their cricket clubs. The people from north are in compititive when it comes to any field, for example look at the business opportunities alone, if maharashtra is not there then the rest of the states are just beggers with a bowl.

Ponting's writing by Paresh V on 18 Nov 2008

May God bless Ponting, Hayden and all to keep writing like this. This will keep them busy, while Indian team concentrates on cricket. The world knows how much importance to give to such great work of literature, so we need not loose sleep over this.
