Recalling the success of Indian team in the Twenty20 World Cup, Ponting wrote in his book 'Captain's Diary 2008' that Dhoni was a "classic example" of a player who could damage the opposition in the shortest version, which offers little scope for a batsman to showcase his technique.
"Teams that are outclassed in five-day matches and even 50-over games are much more competitive in Twenty20. India offer a good example of this. The shorter the format of the game the more dangerous they become," Ponting said.
"Some of their batsmen -- Yuvraj Singh and M S Dhoni are classic examples -- can hurt you more in shorter games, because their is less opportunity to find ways of picking apart their techniques," he while adding that "Form in Twenty20 really doesn't count for all that much".
Having said so, Ponting also dismissed India's successful journey to the T20 world title, attributing it to more luck and little skills.
"I am not as cynical about the game as I once was, but some negatives still nag at me. There is so much luck involved in this shortened form of the game; it's not always going to be the best team that wins. I guess that's true of all sport but it seems to be accentuated here... Little wonder, then, that the tournament has been unpredictable, with many locals stunned that previously unbeaten South Africa was eliminated so comfortably by India," he said.
Dhoni, however, went on to prove Ponting wrong as he led India to a thumping 2-0 win in the recent four-Test series. The Tasmanian right-hander said he wondered why Dhoni had complained against him about sledging during the a one-dayer in Kochi last year.
"After the game, at the captain's media conference, MS Dhoni revealed that he had complained to the umpires about what he called 'harsh' language that I and some other Australian players had reputedly used on the field. I really don't know where he was coming from. The umpires didn't have a problem, match referee Chris Broad didn't have a problem and I wonder whether Dhoni was trying to somehow square the ledger after the controversy that engulfed S Sreesanth and Harbhajan Singh in Kochi."
Ponting said Dhoni's behaviour was rather strange as Broad had lauded his team's approach towards the game.
"I actually sat on the plane right behind Chris Broad, and he made a point of turning around and congratulating me for the way out team approached the game".

DEAR POINTING YOU SHOULD ACCECPT THAT YOUR POINT IS NOT THAT MUCH SHARP AGAINST INDIA SO BE CAREFUL YOU ARE GOING TO LOOOOSE AGAIN AND AGAIN AGAINST INDIA
I agree with Hemant Naik. Yesterday Maharashtra government said that 80% reservation to Marathis. Why not reservation of Marathis in sports also ?
Austrialians are proving time and again that there are bad losers. It is either punter complaining about his ill luck during the series or Hayden nitpicking about the slow over rate in this so called " third world country". May be they have to get used to the fact that they are not the dominant team (at least for the present) and they have been challenged in all forms of the game...be it india or any other country. They have to learn to reconcile to the fact that the level of cricket in rest of the world has increased and they rather concentrate on improving their game than indulge in such spitefulness.
If 2-3 Marathi players are not taken into team we Marathis will not allow India to play in Mumbai. We will go to Raj Thackeray and once he says something than selectors will not have any option. No one can touch Raja Saheb Raj Thackeray as home minister RR Patil is also Marathi and we have our Marathi men in Police and Courts in Mumbai. We are Marathi first and Indian last.
Of all the people should we take the word of Chris Broad, who only tries to find fault with Asian teams, especially Indian and whatever Australian team he congratulates them for their good behaviour. This Broad should never be allowed to enter India. So also Hayden and Gilchrist, who talk against us, but want to play here to make money. Australia won their Sydney test last only because of favourable umpiring and not because of their skill, which please note.
Hi Ponting, What colour is Chris Broad? If you are not colour blind you will know the answer and the reason why he always agrees with whites and punishes non-white players espescially the Asians!
Do not respond to his comments now. Do it after the series with England. Make him eat his words with a couple of bottles of beer to properly digest it.
I'm 100% agree with Ponting that australian were very unlucky b'coz this time Bucknors and Bensons were not with his team. Dont worry Ponting
When India went to Australia, Australia won the series and success more to do with bad empire decision than skill
I wonder as to why the media is still giving importance to persons like Ponting. Absolutely he doesn't have any grace of accepting the defeat. As a captain, he should have made an introspection and watched the video recordings, to find out the shortcomings on his part and team-mates, in order to rectify the same. On the contrary, he goes to the extent of saying that the win is merely because of luck on the part of Dhoni and his men, which statement is highly condemnable. If he says so, we have to ultimately come to the conclusion that all these years Australia won the matches due to their luck only and not by their talents. Look Mr Ponting, India is going to be shortly rated as NUMBER 1 team in all formats of the games - i.e. Test, ODI and T20. Be prepared to accept INDIA as the King team of Cricket. If you have still this sort of complex, avoid coming to India to play IPL matches under the captaincy of LUCKY Captains.
Accept your defeat like a man you whinger. You are looking for excuses to blame someone other than yourself for it.
Aussies lost becos of theri f..... attitude . India has now defeated them more than once . Accept your defeat like a sportsman, you frustrated man.
The Australian defeat in tests has proved true the hindi proverb" Ghamandi ka sir nicha"
Ponting lick your wounds your team will also get thrashed by New Zealand shortly.GOOD LUCK TO DANIEL VETORI AND HIS TEAM YOU CAN THRASH THE AUSTRALIANS.OUR GOOD WISHES ARE WITH YOU.
First of all, congrats to Dhoni and his team-mates for the test win against Australia and the curernt 2-0 ODI win against England in 7-match series. The fact of the matter is that one can't always win, you might/could loose too. One has to accept both the winnings and losses, that is gentlemaship. The problem of Australian cricket team is that they are not ready to accept their defeat. Ricky is now writing it is not the 'skill' of Indians but due to their luck they are winning. I hope he's talking nonsense. Indians should ignore his comments. Also, Matthew Hayden is insulting India by calling 'Third World Country'. What is the status of his country? India is far ahead of Australia in so many respects. It is high time that India be classified as a 'developed country'. Let us excuse these 'Australians'. At least, they will agree that India is the largest democracy in the world.
I had rated Ricky as a matured person , but the article confirms he is no exception .It clearly speaks that he is not able to digest the crushing defeat with team from subcontinent. India have beaten Aus , in Australia, in Test
Mr ponting The attitude clearly shows whose falt it was in the summer. better luck next time.
I would like to name him Ricky ' Whiner' Ponting. Bad losers is what i can say. They have been licking their wounds ever since the drubbing they got from our hands. Its takes GUTS/ HONESTY to be a good loser. Which 'Whiner' isnt.
I agree with Ponting, Indian cericket is never consistent in winning rather defeating, see Australia which was undefeated for more than 15 years, really brave on field. In India the corrupt govt. has more value for cricketers than sacrificing solders for the cause of motherland. All other sports has been dumped and only cricket, politicians mutually earns millions of rupees by making fool indian innocent spectacles. Cricketers win or loos, they get the money.Azzradin lead India for more than 8 years, when caught in bribery case for fixing match, express his grief by saying he was targetted due to muslim. Cricket must be stopped in India and all money BCCI posses must be spent for welfare of common people.70% People syill live in below povert line. Shame BCCI and Shame corrupt politicians.
Cry baby! try to digest defeats too!!!!
India has been doing good job from last few years. One cannot label it as Luck. Is it lotterry? We have 5 days, 1 day, then 40 overs match. It is not a game of one ball or one over to say luck. Australia, entertain us with some good games, do not give such a stupid statements. Whatever you do is correct, whatever others do is wrong or nothing great or luck? Accept the defeat, create a strong team again, play good cricket.
Broad is comes from a country who dumped criminals into australia. So pontings master appreciating his team behaviour is nothing new. Broad is a hand in glove with aussies. So obvisouly thieves will never let there counterpart let go.
Australias success is more to do with cheating and help from bucknors and bensons
Ponting has clearly show cased his thinking as short termed as the T20 version of the game. He has not got the intellect and capability to think beyond his own self and his control over language and communication is limited unlike that of his counterparts in other parts of the cricketing world. Dhoni and before him Kumble have been sterling ambassadors of the game and country and have shown more composure and diplomacy while being at the loosing end of the game. Ponting has shown a remarkable ability to cry "Sour Grapes" everytime he has lost. And he does repeatedly play the dirty game to win. May be he should learn from the "exponents" of shorter game how to think before talking or writing and grow better! And accept that the same exponents of shorter game sent his team packing in the longer versions!
Mr Ricky ponting has gone mad after their 2-0 loss in India . Australians are masters in sledging and the worst team in international cricket as far as their attitude is concerned.
