Melbourne In yet another attack on an Indian in Melbourne, a taxi driver from the community was injured when a drunk Australian star footballer allegedly assaulted him after an altercation.

Essendon football player Michael Hurley was arrested for kicking and punching an Indian cabbie outside a fast-food outlet on Hoddle Street here.

Hurley, 19, took a taxi outside a South Melbourne nightclub about 5:30 am and went to the food outlet. He left the taxi for some food and when the driver pursued him asking for fare, Hurley allegedly kicked him in the groin and punched him, according to 'The Herald Sun'.

Police arrested Hurley at the scene.

The soccer player was later was taken to Fitzroy police station and questioned over the incident. He was subsequently released.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the alleged attack was over a fare dispute. Hurley is expected to be charged for assault-related offences, according to media reports.

The paper did not identify the Indian cab driver who is said to have received minor injuries in the incident.

Essendon, the club, has described the player's arrest as "disappointing and unacceptable".

Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said," We are extremely disappointed that Michael was out so late and that he put himself in a situation where an incident occurred."

double standards by Jim of OZ on 27 Sep 2009

88 Aussies were murdered in the Bali bombings where they were targeted because of their race and nationality and we Aussies didn't say all indonesions were terrorists or blame the indonesian people for the actions of a small number of their citizens . Yet all Aussies are branded racists by the Indian media just becasue of the actions of a small number of drunken thugs.

Indian taxi driver assaulted by Aus footballer by Dr. Paras Deo on 28 Sep 2009

Terror attacks are carried out by terrorists and racial attacks by racists.OZs did blame the so called Islamists for that.If racism wasn't a theme for the OZ politicians they wouldn't make a bee-line to India to mend fences. The Oz politicians are pretty smart. They know what they are doing. AUS could tolerate more politicians like Rudd.

Indian taxi driver assaulted by Aus footballer by Rodgers Father on 04 Oct 2009

Rodgers sidekick should know that the only reason that the mosters from Oz is to correct the misinformation provided in the name of journalism in India. It is also like my useless son and you as his side kick are giving that needs to be corrected. Here the footballer is being charged. The legal system which is uncorrupted will decide the outcome

World doesnt center around Aussie's by Roger on 28 Sep 2009

88 Aussies along with another 120 people of different nationalities died in this unfortunate incidence. It wasnt the aussies alone. It was carried out by Terrorists. The difference between this and what is happening is just this. Racsim in Australia unfortunately is embedded into the social and cultural values which originates primarily because of the community/commune form of lifestyle.

Indian Student Safety by Kerry on 26 Sep 2009

Brumby and police continue to ignore reality. Melbourne is violent and there is a racial undertone. While they are denial the underlying structural problems will not be addressed. Perhaps the Indian Police should second a very senior community- policel iaison officer to Melbourne to teach the Victoria Police some basics? Aus politicians endlessly junketting India is hardly helpful. Real initiatives are needed.

Not raciswm by Jim of OZ on 26 Sep 2009

It had nothing to do with race,as far as l know he made no racial comments or insults, it was a dispute between a taxi driver and a drunken passenger over the fare, the same thing would have happened if the driver was white, plenty of white taxi drivers get bashed all the time also ,its a very dangerous job in Australia especially at night

@ro"d"gers father by Roger on 25 Sep 2009

The frustrating issue is prevelance of racism and as accepted by the premier brumby. Aussies have lost the plot; Its becoming increasingly difficultfor them to understand we indians dont believe in violence but instead in the power of the pen- "Pen is mightier than the sword". Peace and tranquility is mightier than booze enabled, drugged induced violence of a few. we have the moral values to stand against the hypocricy of a setof people who are just unable to digest that some/ majority people in thier society are extraordinarily low-end and still carry the colonial attitudes of racism and discrimination. Apology from Brumby vindicates what is being so loudly said by the indian media. Good going. Oz need us. They have lost the car industry just as any other industry. Growing India can be of advantage to Australia. India should support such a nation but not with students based on lies offered by the aussie govt.

Stop blaming the ausies by Raj Thackrey on 25 Sep 2009

First of all no indian has any right to point finger at the aussies. These indians come to australia because india cannot or is not capable to provide them livelihood, after comming to australia these people start working illegally and impose their home grown values on the locals. These indians are no different than beeharies flooding mumbai. They need to be taught a lesson, and dumped back to their country.

Articles about violence in Australia by Sameer on 25 Sep 2009

The last few weeks have many articles on violence against Indians in Australia. There is a strong underlying implication behind these articles that these attacks are racially motivated. Yet there is no article which compares assaults on Indians in Australia with assaults on other communities in Australia. Implying 'Indians Targeted' without such data is not only poor but also unethical journalism.

Indian taxi driver assaulted by Aus footballer by Rodgers Father on 25 Sep 2009

My son "useless" Rodger and his side kick (or his left B---)Paras will never admit that if a tourist or an overseas resident had been assaulted in India, no one would have been arrested. Look at the number of rape cases against tourists, hardly any one has been arrested or case moves at snail pace. Say what you may justice is not blind in Australia whereas in India it is justice denied.

re- Assault by Sankar on 25 Sep 2009

While all these abuses are bad enough, the only thing that is worse is the way Indian media reports these events and I confess it is almost hysterical across the media outlets in India. While serious, it is not worthy of front page spread. These things occur everywhere at random all over the World and Indians are not targeted, specifically. You all cool down and report objectively on other items simply ignored.
