New Delhi, March 7: After Shiv Sena’s protests against Valentine’s Day celebrations, the BJP on Friday joined the moral policing brigade by opposing beauty contests.

On the eve of International Women’s Day, the saffron party asked the Indian women to desist from aping the western culture.

“Beauty is gifted by nature and the almighty. How can there be a contest,” BJP president Rajnath Singh said at a women’s conference in New Delhi to mark the occasion.

He noted that contest can be of some quality which is developed by one’s efforts and not on something which has been gifted by God.

Singh recollected that he had banned beauty contests in Uttar Pradesh when he was the Chief Minister of the state.

The BJP chief expressed concern over the growing craze for the Western culture and some women taking to it.

“We should not try to follow the Western culture. You are Indian women and this needs to be remembered,” he said.

Fair enough...but what if the indian woman decides not to care about what you think ? What are you going to do ? Molest them ? Beat them ? Throw acid on them ? Hey about about this - I think BJP and other indian men should mind their own freaking business and let the women decide what they want to do and how. Shut the F up.

Article in Sunday Times by Sh. Nitish Kumar, CM, Bihar by Dr. V.B. Gautam on 09 Mar 2008

I contradict his views why Biharis are being illtreated. Its because their influx is very large and most of them come as unskilled labourers. Majority of them squat on the pavements and either make tea or act as the roadside barber. The other category pulls the cycle-rickshaws with absolute disregard for the traffic rules and their wives clean, sweep and act as maids in households. They construct a jhuggi anywhere unauthorizedly and access electricity and water illegally. All these things pose a bigger burder on the entire society wherever these Biharis come to live, thus disturbing the ecological balance. They do not want to change their lifestyles or their mannerisms so as to be more acceptable to the society where they come to live. This is the root cause why the label "Biharis" is stamped on them. It is not that they are mostly bad people but comparing with other migrant communities, they stand out singularly and in a rather negative manner.

INDIAN CULTURE IS THE BEST STICK TO IT by rajababu on 09 Mar 2008

UNDOUBTEDLY INDIAN IDEOLOGY AND CULTURE IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD, LOOK AT THE WESTERN WAY, THE OVERLY GRANTED FREEDOM TO WOMEN HAS RESULTED IN IRESPONSIBLITY, SUCH AS GET DRUNK EVERY WEEKEND , SLEEP WITH STRANGERS, GET PREGNANT AND LEAVE WITH BASTARD CHILDREN WHO GO ON TO BECOME CRIMINALS LATER IN LIFE, IN REALITY THE LATEST SURVEY SHOWS THE WOMEN DRINK MORE THAN MEN NOW LOOK AT THE ISLAMIC ARAB SCENARIO, WHERE WOMEN IS VIRTUALLY TREATED LIKE SLAVE AND CONSIDERED HALF THE MAN WHEN IT COMES TO OPINION AND HAVE NO FREEDOM TO DO ANYTHING ON HER OWN THE INDIAN CULTURE IS THE BEST MIDDLE PATH BETWEEN THE TWO EXTREMES I MENTIONED

illiterate freak by vishal on 11 Mar 2008

You seem to think that GRANTING freedom to women is your job. You can GRANT or REVOKE that freedom if you are not satisfied with the results. Well let me inform you something fool. Women of India are INNATELY FREE. They can sleep with whoever they want whenever they want and there is nothign you taliban mofos can do about it. So shut it and go do your work.

Women's choice by Godwin on 07 Mar 2008

Certain things from western culture has changed our Indian women life for good. Mr. Rajnath comment is very silly, he should encourage women to analysis western culture and take good things and adapt those with Indian culture. He should remember all women have brains and can choose what she feels the best. On women's day he should have asked all BJP workers through out India to give back the dowry money to their in-laws. He should have asked every BJP workers to take an oath not to get dowry from this day on, not to beat their wife and treat them equally. First of all everyone should think why women in India are influenced by western culture. "Equality for women" which makes our Indian women falls for it. Yes they need that very badly. Here we thrust certain work on women and keep them bound to do it, for example kitchen, how many men help their wife with morning kitchen routines. How many clean toilets, how many help wash cloths, how many dare stop their parent from taking dowry, how many mothers-in-law keep their daughter-in-law as slaves, how many husbands keep their mouth shut knowingly? Why not we do these small help to keep our women’s more comfortable within our house and keeps equality. Even working women don’t get these kinds of help from their husbands. It’s a men’s world in India. In general, women are always under man’s control in India. Even if the women is educated and wants to work, they are let to go for work - this is happening in many parts of India, its because of one simple question "Who will take care of the house-hold duties". When these things change women in India will not look outside our country.

What Beuty contest has to do with politics? by Raju on 07 Mar 2008

I am strong supporter of BJP but it seems to me that Rajnath Sing has lost his marble! This is the best effort from these Ulta Pradesh man to keep Mr. Advani out of PM's Chair. The Mr. Singh is making such a stupid statement which will not tolerated by any one in modern age. What contests has to do with the politics of the country?

Indian woman by Pran on 07 Mar 2008

First the westren women have no culure but way of life. Why Indian women only why not Indian men also do the same.I have been a frequent visiter to North Amrica and interact with citizens there ,they also feel their socalled culture is decaying the society.

Indian Women by Venkat on 07 Mar 2008

While Mr.Rajnath is entitled to his opinion, he cannot go around banning beauty contests etc. He has no right to do that. Totally as a society man or woman we should reject westernization at deper levels. While superficial aspects like dress, food etc are personal choices(though I don't approve) what we must strive is to eliminate mental colonization. For example looking for western approval before we praise a Indian thing, beleiving western propaganda that all good values like democracy, freedom of speech are all western origin etc. Even small things like in a restaurant giving preference to a white customer as compared to Indian customer in Inda!! All these mental colonization need to be eliminated.

Bharatiya culture is the richest culture by Vidhur on 07 Mar 2008

Bharatiya culture is the richest culture. We are fortunate to born in a country and culture, which is the world's richest and progressive culture. Western junk-food and por*no culture has ruined their family life, we must remember this. Please don't follow blindly western culture, practice what is good they have. I am not against western culture in totality, but one must be cautious what is good for our culture, society and environment. Most Bharatiya started alcohol drinking culture, this is a blind following. Now a days, many westerners don't drink and smoke.

Why there is so much ignorant interpretation? by P Rai on 07 Mar 2008

It is incredible to see all these people here making such misplaced interpretation of what was said by Rajnath Singh. India has always treated its women with highest respect. In every sphere of life India has upheld the feminine power. It is ridiculous to read some people make comments like,"...in India men have the right to assault women..." What a shame you are an Indian! "Right to assualt?" No country gives that right. Indian woman has her own identity and all Rajnath is saying that our women do not need to ape the Western ways blindly. Obviously, ther is nothing wrong with beauty contests, but if that's driving many of our urban women into giving more importance to outward beauty, then it is a wrong priority. But then India is a nation with so many women in high places at every sphere of life. Indian women will do well to take them as their models, not necessarily the women in other cultures. In fact, western ways are suited for women in those countries, nothing wrong with that. Take the good aspects of all cultures, but don't ape others blindly. And, my God! don't speak so much ill about your own motherland!

Rajnath by M.Nyamathullah on 07 Mar 2008

At a time when the large world is shrinking in size and cultural barries disappear, how to demarcte Western culture? S Should the woman discard "whisper"and go in for sheet of cloth?Let women make comments and menfolk mind their business in such matters.

in response to BJP stand on beauty contest by SD on 07 Mar 2008

How about man aping to western culture? is it okay for them but not for women. what is givt against the liberalisation?

Taj Mahal is a monument of love by N Guru on 07 Mar 2008

This is ridiculous and only shows how shallow the party is. How many indian men show their love to their women? The only aim in getting married in India is the dowry. All indian men shamelessly will demand a dowry . India is a democratic country, secondly every women is equal to a man. If men in India can wear pants and shirts (even in the villages) so can the women choose what they would like to wear. Another point, men in India treat women with little respect. Would they prefer the Indian women to wear burkas?? What would you think of that Mr Bal Thakeray?? I think they should also ban all Bollywood cinema too. Since it shows women in western outfits. All these people who think that women have to be at home are ones who take part in molesting other women. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his beloved Mumtaz. Well, 99% of indians cannot afford to do the same, but 99% of indians can certainly send a valentines card to show their appreciation to the woman they love. Mr Rajanth Singh how many times in your life have you said 'I love you' to your wife? Or maybe you are one of those who received a hefty dowry to get married? and then again maybe your still a bachelor. For Mr B Thackeray, I suppose he is a bachelor, so what does he know about love ???? Stop worrying about little inane things and try to get equality, prosperioty and security to the indian people. Rather than wasting time and energy on how to ask indian women to live their lives you should be worried about the corruption tht is rampant in the political rungs. If politicians like Bal Thackeray and Mr Rajnath Singh had their way, the Indain armed forces's battle dress would be a camouflaged dhoti and kurta.

Women? by arbitary on 07 Mar 2008

It is amazing how all political parties jump in and advice women. What about Indian men? Molestation, harassment, dowry deaths, rapes are all part of Indian culture, right? If a woman is molested, it is her fault, maybe she wasn't dressed conservatively. But an Indian man has a right to assault any woman he wants? Beauty contests and all are secondary and non-issues. Can any political party guarantee women's safety and standard of living in any part of the country?

Hey,whats wrong with you? Please do not delete my comments. by "Nautankee" on 07 Mar 2008

The BJP has a sick mentality like Al-Qaida.These persons are born at the wrong place and at the wrong time.

western culture by shashi holla on 07 Mar 2008

The western society claims both men and women are equal , but women in west does not earn any respect from men because women are not so special like in INDIA. Dont be panic , highly westernised Indian women may get less respect than Indian women with Indianness. BJP is very much right and thanks for not being hypocritical on this respect.

Rajnath Quote by Pramod on 07 Mar 2008

Well said and please dont ridicule the real motive behind the quote. We are aping western culture that's the truth. We are getting success throught out the world because of the way we are brought up by our parents specially by our mother. The home environment. The divorce rate is so high in west that the children suffer the most. The culture propogated in west is de-stabilising the basic fabric of family. Yes, there should be freedom in society but please do not forget the a stable environment of home is where actually nurtures a child. In India also the divorce rate is getting high and is actually the fall out of western culture inhabiting our day to day lives.

My view by venkat on 07 Mar 2008

Well said. I still don't understand how these women participate in beauty contests knowing very well that beauty is God's gift (by birth)and not something earned through hardwork. Contests should be made out of hardwork and intelligence. I believe every women who participate in such shows are boneheads. They just don't know why they are participating and how they can claim anything out of it. This is the one reason why in western countries, such shows are loosing audience and becoming more irrelevant. Nobody cares these days who is the Miss Universe or Miss World. Only in India, these women are pathetically following such outdated contests to satify their ego or something like that.

Rajnath Singh is right by S on 07 Mar 2008

I agree. These shows and hypes are just to create market for the western companies.
