Washington, November 6: Indian-American Sonal Shah, an eminent economist who heads Google’s philanthropic arm, has been appointed an advisory board member by US President-elect Barack Obama to assist his team in smooth transition of power.

40-year-old Shah is part of a panel comprising individuals with significant private and public sector experience who will offer their expertise in their respective fields to Obama’s transition team, US media reported on Thursday.

She along with other members of the advisory board will help the transition team headed by former White House chief of staff John Podesta, longtime Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, and Pete Rouse, the President-elect’s Senate chief of staff.

Shah, who was named the ‘Person of the Year 2003’ by ‘India Abroad’ publication, currently works for Google.org on their Global Development team, where she is engaged in defining their global development strategy and promoting the firm’s philanthropy work.

Prior to joining Google, she was Vice President at Goldman, Sachs and Co. and developed and implemented its environmental strategy. She has also served as the Associate Director for Economic and National Security Policy at the Centre for American Progress, where she worked on trade, outsourcing and post-conflict reconstruction issues.

In the past, she also worked with the Department of Treasury on various economic issues and regions of the world.

Shah is the co-founder of the US-based non-profit organisation Indicorps which offers one-year fellowships for Indian-origin Americans to work on specific development projects in India.

Her father moved from Gujarat to New York in 1970 and she along with her sister and mother joined him in 1972. She also has a brother.

Nothing Great-Let's wait and see by Sam Vijay Kumar on 07 Nov 2008

Tis commendable Ms.Shah has joined the president-elect Obama's team. This is not a great achievement unless she does anything constructive with her position. We'll have to wait and see. Moreover She and her parents have left India long ago and hence as an american she has entered Obama's team. There is no reason for us to exaggerate this beyond its significance for us.

Sonal Shah a great achiever and we are proud of her by n.krishna on 07 Nov 2008

Obama win is great. His success as a president is yet to be proved. But from a purely managerial point of view he is not suitable to be a president as his background is very complex and will never be able to think straight as a top leader of a very rich and powerful nation.Eventually Obama will bring USA to the level of Russia as business confidence will reduce. India should be happy with that situation as USA will less likely to interfere with our elections and conversion or in state and central governments. We had a bad experience when CIA intervened in the Kerala in 1956 to remove the stage govt, by an agitation through the christian churches and that produced CIA leaders like A.K. Anthony, Oomman Chandy etc. Because of the CIA product AK Anthony who is now the Defense minister that we are seeing the public trial of army men for terrorism which in any other nation would have done secretly. Last Election CIA helped Sonia. Now the funding for conversion from white house will dry up

Congrats Sonal Shah ji...all the best for new responsibility...

Sonal Shah by akm on 07 Nov 2008

It is an irony. Sonal has been brought up in OFBJP. BJP is the most communalist party in progressive India and has always dented Indian image, the worst was 2002 Gujarat. If she grew up in this atmosphere, what advice she is going to give it the President. Divide America on communal lines! BJP's policy is divide and rule , only power they look for.
