Silicon Valley, February 10: An Indian-American clerk at a famous chain store has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen during a suspected robbery attempt in California’s Vallejo city.

Surinder Kumar, a 55-year-old clerk at a '7-eleven' store in Vallejo city, was shot during a robbery, since investigators found an undisclosed amount of cash missing from the register, police said.

Kumar died early Friday morning after a customer found him with gunshot wounds behind the counter, Vallejo police said.

It described the suspects as two black males, but said that no further details were immediately available. The police was also seeking public's help to find the killers of Kumar.

The customer contacted police in the wee hours saying Kumar was behind the counter, bleeding and unconscious, police said.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, the coroner's office reported.

Kumar, who immigrated to the USA from Ludhiana in 2000 along with his family, had been working the graveyard shift at the store for about six years, Sgt Vic Massenkoff said.

Margaret Chabris, a spokeswoman for 7-Eleven, said Kumar was a good employee and well liked in the community.

"This is a real senseless act of violence and there is no justifying what happened," Chabris said.

Solano County coroner's office Deputy Adrian Garcia said Kumar had been shot twice - once in the leg and a fatal wound to the left side of his chest.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them and are urging anyone wishing to leave an anonymous tip can call Solano County Crime Stoppers.

Cheap Indians by Syed Zainulabedin on 10 Feb 2008

These hindu Indians are idiot and try to save the money and lost their life. In recent months 4 other Indians were got shot dead in attempted robbery cases. Life is important not the money these cheap Indians never understand. Police itself advised people to give what ever the robberer wants first and try to save ur life but they never use common sense. We heard banks were robbed and these american employees comply the request of a robberer to save the life.

cheap hindus???? by Lakshmi Mukundan on 11 Feb 2008

I had a muslim friend whose entire family migrated with the coveted green card to the US. None of them was educated enough to get jobs and opened up a Dollar store in Brooklyn N York. The 26 year old son was in the store and was shot in broad daylight by black armed robbers. So now should we call him and his sorrowing family cheap Muslims now????

Yeah!! It is the same Idiotic Hindu Indians who subsidise the Hajj expenses of the Muslims, divert donations from their temples to fund Madrassas and renovate mosques, allow Muslims to have their own civil code in an allegdly secular country (India, provide special travel concessions for Pakistani and Bangladeshi to visit visit their relatives in India(read Muslims)etc etc etc. If the Idiotic Hindu Indians became a little sensible it will be the Muslims, presumably like you who will be wailing about it. PS the Muslims in india are trying to claim backward status. No need to comment further on that.
