Washington Noting that India is now a key player globally, a top American admiral said that a strong and positive relationship with New Delhi is key to secure long-term US interest in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

"India's growing economic, diplomatic and military power makes them a key player not only in South and Central Asia but globally as well," Admiral Robert Willard, said in his confirmation hearing for Commander of US Pacific Command.

"A strong positive relationship with India is essential to achieving long-term US goals such as regional security and stability, reduced tensions with Pakistan, and wide-ranging cooperation to counter extremism," he said.

"We should continue to expand our military-to-military engagement to include multi-lateral partners and increasingly complex exercise scenarios that help to advance India's military capabilities," the Admiral said in written response to a question.

"In coordination with US Central Command, we will develop confidence building measures and events that help reduce India-Pakistan tension and support the greater US-Afghanistan-Pakistan Strategy," he said.

The Admiral said America's military-to-military relations with India are very positive and expanding. Both the countries view military-to-military relationship as the foundation of Indo-US "strategic partnership", he said. "Due to the wide range of shared security interests, accompanied with the increasing complexity and maturity of our engagement, this relationship will continue to expand," Willard informed the US lawmakers.

Currently, the two countries are engaged on many fronts including foreign military sales, advanced training such as MALABAR and RED FLAG, and real world operations such as counter-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden and US POWMIA recovery missions in northeastern India.

When asked how US engagement in Af-Pak effects does its relationship with New Delhi, the Admiral said India has voiced strong support for the US objective to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"While they voice their support, they also voice their concern that the US might sacrifice our strong bilateral relationship and its long-term benefits for the sake of an immediate Afghanistan-Pakistan campaign strategy," he observed.

"Our best course of action to allay Indian concerns while garnishing their overall support for our ongoing regional efforts is to continue to strengthen our bilateral relationship with India across all agencies of government, including mil-to-mil," Willard said.

A paper tiger by Vijay on 10 Jul 2009

Congress has made India a spineless nation. Even the peoples from the terrorist countries like Pakistan get more importance than Indians. Chinese govt help people to go abroad and earn money. But India govt only exploit NRIs. I've stayed in Europe. Most of the Indians do not know how to behave in a foreign country. So the foreiners look Indians as creatures of thirld world. Truely speaking, the world leaders regard indian politicians as good-for-nothing.

"military to military ties" - meaning ? by Indian aborad on 10 Jul 2009

Need for stronger Indo-US ties. by Billy P Domes on 10 Jul 2009

India should take this as a cue to not only develop stronger ties with the US, but to also make policy makers in that country realise that they should do more to strengthen ties with India. Unlike Pakistan, which many view as a failed state, policy makers in the USA should be made to realise that they have to strengthen India who besides being the torch bearer of democracy among developing and underdeveloped countries in the world, is also the bulwark in the fight against international Islamic terrorists spawned in Pakistan with the tacit approval of China.

Global power by A.Dias on 10 Jul 2009

People talk very high about India in those meetings but in reality they fool us as Indians are treated as third world nationals ( TCN's). Indian Passport has no value internationaly. A donkey from Europe or America even South Africa is far superior than a highly qualified Indian. Indians with Indian Pasport are treated like that. This is the ground reality.Indian Government must note this.

Global power by Vijay on 10 Jul 2009

Yes, you're right. I've stayed in Europe. Only some Indians get respect from Europeans, but its personal, not in the name of India. Indians are considered as cowards and inferior to Chinese and Pakis. Congress govt is responsible for it. They made India a begging and boot-licking nation world wide.

India to become a Key global player by Shrinivas on 10 Jul 2009

India can become a Global power and super power onlyif?? by LALITH BHANSAL on 10 Jul 2009

India can become a Global power and super power only if the Dynasty is thrown out from the country this dynasty which ruled India for more than 47 years has not done anything except to make money for themselves. Throw the Dynasty out in two to three years India will grow and become A super power.

Buttering by Sridhar on 10 Jul 2009

These sort of statements keep coming out, on and off. Why? Just to gain some favour to instal their bases in India and in the Indian ocean. One thing, till India treats evey one from the President to the pauper on the street, from the VIPs to the (VPP) Very poor person equally, punishes and gets rid of corrupt people, abolishes the divisions based on caste and religion it cannot be deemed to be super or a global power.

Do not get carried away by this praise by Shobha Deodhar on 10 Jul 2009

Do not trust these Americans, they are known to be more slippery than eels. They say one thing like this today and go around to stab us in the back by blocking our entry in UNSC Permanent Seat. This is not any new, unfortunately stupid Congress and irresponsible media are blind to the real meaning. Only Chinese and Pakistanis can match them. This statement is but an eyewash. Tomorrow you will hear something absolutely opposite. Beware of the America-China-Pakistan nexus already in place aimed at strangling us.

Global Power by Mike on 10 Jul 2009

This might be what the Indians would like to think of themselves. For those 'Indians' living abroad like myself get no feeling whatsoever that India is a global power. On every level; Education, Health, Economic, Infrastructure, Religious, Civic duty, World stage at large India ranks towards the bottom rather than the top!

How pathetic by Kes on 10 Jul 2009

Some guy makes a random statement, and our newspapers turn that into front page 'news'.How desperate! How pathetic!

Stop the blame game by Rajan on 10 Jul 2009

For the past 52 years , We continue to blame the politicians, Government, Castism, corruption, etc.. So, we were in a complete blame game. However, some wise politicians and other well wishers of the country, have consistently put in efforts. That has contributed whatever the growth we have now. Look at how many Indians have studied in India and moved to Western countries for Job opportunities. There are lots and lots of Indians in High tech industry making big salaries. Most of them are from IITs, and they proudly say that they are from IITs, which is one of best ranked universities in the world now. I remember that, when the whole nation was struggling with poverty in the post independence era, Jawaharlal Nehru has invested in these institutes. We are clearly reaping the benefits now. There are many such accomplishments that deserves strong PAT in the back, especially for the current senior citizens, who only worked hard and did not see any significant growth in the past 50 years

Impotent Power by Jason Bourne on 10 Jul 2009

India is ruled by Clowns, Bafoons and Circus jokers by the Gandhi dynasty..which consider India as it Circus Arena. We are not war prepared,we the worst beggars in the world streets,no dignity and respect of being an India out there.India is a growing Impotent power without anything.Anybody can screw and torture Indians anywhere and we will say we are Gandhians without any shame to strike back.We will bleed to death on the bed of terror and our neighbours will have fun out of it.and still we will be Gandhians. Our country is directly heading to split in the northeast well designed for a short military surgical strike anytime from China.Still we will say we a regional power..Pakistan will burn our economies down and terorize us with fun of the bullet and we willstand high to say we a growing regional power with a mighty military an impotent force all under the great rule of the Gandhis.Shame to say this.

Gowing Yes - Power No---- by romesh.sharma on 10 Jul 2009

sure India is growing that too fast but in the wrong directions e.g.insecurity,lacking defence hard-ware,deteriorating infrastructure conditions, increasing poverty, destructive standards of education, lowest international diplomacy, fast spreading internal terrorism and feelings of separatism-----.Indian diplomacy and power is a laughing stock among other nations.Look at the plight of power and say when Indian politicians go to purchase weapons and ready to pay cash no one trusts or shows serious interests and they put their conditions instead!Growing corruption, nepotism, dependency, selfish motives is another progress.some or the other how Indian business community and NRIs have managed to boost little economy and USAmericans have seen some money which they want to extract out. These praises and bravos are just simple trick to make lucrative deals for Indians are too susceptible to such praises.Just watch how our PM is kept in a corner just like a public servant or viewer.Deceptive exaggera

Super Power? Ha Ha Ha! by Harish Patel on 10 Jul 2009

A people who take no pride in their great heritage, a people without self-respect and any honour, a people who allow their agenda to be set by the pernicious NDTVWALAS/WALIS AND and CNNIBNWALAS/WALIS have no right and can never ever be a be a super power. One only has to take one look at the slimy and hypocritical politically correct crowd that infests the capital Delhi to understand what I mean. Who in the world would want to take such a people and such a country seriously. Even tiny Burkino Faso has more pride and self-respect. Fellow Indians just live in the super power delusions that the white man so mischeviously inculcates in you.

We R IN FOOLS PARADISE by sameer on 10 Jul 2009

Look after region. The Globe can wait. by Ponkoh Sivakumaran on 10 Jul 2009

Best not to get carried away by such trashy praise. India is losing out to China in the Indian Ocean. It cannot protect its fisherman from Sri Lanka. Over 400 have died at the hands of the Sri Lankan navy more than those through terrorist attacks. So, how does one explain this. Does the government care only about a rich city like Bombay or the poor fishermen in Tamilnadu as well. The London Times reports that over 1400 die daily in the IDP camps in Sri Lanka. Does India keep quiet because it has complicity in the events leading to this? Why do farmers die miserably in this "global power"? There are so many internal problems to fix rather than get involved in the great power machinations of the Americans who in the declining stages of their power want to drag India into the same mess they are in. Better to become strong regionally and return to the old neutral, moral foreign policy than take sides. India is moving away from its strong moral roots. It must return to them.

global power by richard on 10 Jul 2009

India is already a global power without any commitment to global security. It has successfully development the system of having treasure islands in the ocean of poverty. Our politicians are so bankrupt in ideas that they have to search the graves to name the monuments we build.

India a Key global player by Ramesh on 10 Jul 2009
