New Delhi The wholesale price index fell 1.58 per cent in the 12 months to July 25, compared with the previous week's annual decline of 1.54 per cent, government data showed on Thursday.

The drop was sharper than a median forecast of 1.5 per cent fall in a Reuters poll.

The annual inflation rate was 12.53 per cent during the corresponding week of 2008.

The wholesale price index is more closely watched than the consumer price index, which is published monthly, because it covers a higher number of products and is released weekly.

MAKE BELIEVE DEFLATION by Anand on 06 Aug 2009

I am sure no one is going to buy this statistic which is showing that the Country today is experiencing Deflation. The prices of all essential commodities have gone over the roof and there is also an asset bubble which has the potential to burst any moment and still the Bureau is dishing out these figures. Even during the onset of globalisation and liberalisation policies, the Left had warned of an immiment agricultural crisis which the Country is experiencing today and this can get only worse day-by-day with more agricultural lands paving the way for luxurious flats and Industries. Adding to these woes is the truant monsoon which can only make things worse. The Countrymen advise to RBI Governor would be to ignore these inflation figures and instead go to the market himself to find out the real situation on ground.

Price level by J. Jayaraman on 06 Aug 2009

Indian Express should immediately publish the retail prices (which is the money paid by common man for any item) of all essential household commodities like rice, wheat atta, pulses, vegetables etc. monthwise for the last 12 months. Of course how can we expect Indian Express and other newspapers to be honest when all these newspapers depend on government advertisements and patronage.

Inflation by KVSKumar on 06 Aug 2009

Mr. IE Editor, please stop reporting this minus WPI inflation. Instead concentrate on the real villain CPI inflation, that is really screwing the massees.

Inflation Statistics and newspapers by J. Jayaraman on 06 Aug 2009

One does not understand how inflation figures are arrived at. All items bought by the common man like rice, wheat, atta, vegetables, pulses etc. are extremely costly compared to the prices even a year ago. Yet newspapers like Indian Express etc. present this distorted statistics as if this is the gospel truth. Obviously all newspapers including Indian newspapers are morally corrupt.

Its is all farce by Kedar on 06 Aug 2009

I dont know how this inflation is going to negative. all the eseential commodities to live a life are getting costlier. I dont know how poor people must be eating. The govt and the political parties are just shouting, they are not bothered. no body is interested in solving this problem.
