Inmates told about tobacco effects

Ludhiana, May 30 National Integrated Medicine Association (NIMA) and D.D. Kotnis Hospital organised a lecture at the Central Jail to observe the Anti-tobacco Day. The lecture was aimed at educating the inmates about the bad effects of tobacco use on health. Dr S.P. Sharma, Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, presided over the seminar.

Dr Inderjit Dhingra, Dr Surendra Gupta, Secretary, NIMA Ludhiana district, S.P. Khanna, Dy Jail Superintendent, Dr K.K. Kharbanda, and Dr Inder Sharma, Dr R.P. Singh, incharge, jail dispensary, were the prominent speakers on the occasion. Dr Surendra Gupta said

that the health was directly affected by smoking or chewing of tobacco, or use of other intoxicants.

“The crime rate also goes up with their use. So to keep a good health, lead a peaceful family life and make the society crime-free, we should never use tobacco or other substances,” said Dr Surendra Gupta. The World Health Organisation (WHO)’s slogan for this year’s “Anti-tobacco day” is “Tobacco-free youth.”

Dr Inderjit S. Dhingra, medical superintendent, D.D. Kotnis Hosptal, promised to organise a de-addiction camp of two-month duration in the jail premises.

He said that one million people died every year because of the use of tabacco. Dr Sat Pal Sharma said use of tobacco in any form was injurious to health, as it was responsible for cancer, TB and heart attacks.
