United Nations, May 2: Iran has complained to the United Nations about remarks of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton that the US would ‘totally obliterate’ the Islamic Republic if it were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Iranian Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Mehdi Danesh-Yazdi described Clinton's statement as ‘provocative, unwarranted and irresponsible’.

The letter dated April 30 also stressed that the remarks undercut the UN efforts to safeguard international peace and security.

"They were 'blatant violation' of the UN Charter and against international legal principles on rights of other nations," the letter read.

In an April 22 interview with ABC television, when Clinton was asked what she would do as President if Iran were to launch a nuclear strike on Israel, she replied, "In next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

Danesh-Yazdi said Iran opposed all weapons of mass destruction. "I wish to reiterate my government's position that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention to attack any other nations."

"Nonetheless Iran would not hesitate to act in self-defense to respond to any attack against it and to take appropriate defensive measures to protect itself," he added.
