Kolkata, August 12 Parents and guardians protested outside the Welland Goldsmith School at Bowbazar on Tuesday against the alleged incident of molestation attempt by group D staff of the school.

The parents alleged that the staff of the school passed lewd remarks at girl students, and frequency of such kind of incidents has increased in recent days.

The protests had led to chaos in the school, which is located close to Lalbazar police headquarters. No police complaint was, however, lodged by the parents.

“The school’s Gurdian Forum started agitating in the morning. I personally went to the spot to investigate the matter. The Guardians Forum told us that a student had been molested a few days ago. But the school authorities showed us a letter from the student’s parents, which ruled out the incident. We have, however, deployed policemen at the school gate to maintain law and order,” said Dijen Chattopadhyay, officer-in-charge of Bowbazar police station.

Since morning there were rumours that a group D staff molested a Class VI student near the toilet on August 7. Another girl reportedly had to hear indecent remarks made by a sweeper of the school on Monday.

As rumours spread, parents and guardians under the school’s Guardian Forum started agitating in front of the school.

They also blocked B B Ganguly Street. Policemen from the Bowbazar police station rushed to the spot and managed to control the crowd.

The protests continued for nearly two hours. Sonali Guha, Trinamool legislator from Satgachia, also arrived at the school and met with the school authorities.

She later met School Education Minister Partho Dey at Writers’ Buildings and apprised him about the incident.

“The school authorities are oblivious to the problems of the students. I was informed by a section of the parents. I went there and saw that there was no woman group D staff in the girl’s school. I have raised the issue with the minister,” Guha said.
