Is Pakistan under pressure to address India's concerns?

New York As Indo-Pak Foreign Ministers are set to meet here, Pakistan appears to be under tremendous pressure from US and its allies to ensure that it convincingly addresses India's concerns on terrorism, including Mumbai attacks, and does nothing that derails all efforts to revive the bilateral peace process.

President Asif Ali Zardari and his Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been meeting a number of world leaders, including US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on the margins of the UN General Assembly session.

They have been told in no uncertain terms that Pakistan can no longer afford to have two different standards for terrorists one for the terrorists targeting the West and other for the terrorists who use Pakistani soil against India, sources said.

This was also the message clearly delivered to Pakistan by the world leaders at the 'Friends of Democratic Pakistan' meeting held early this week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, which was co-chaired by Obama, Zardari and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Signals coming from the western capitals and their recent statements indicate that these leaders are supportive of India's stand that there can be no progress on the peace talks front unless Pakistan shows its commitment and real progress in taking action against those who planned and executed the 26/11 attacks.

All Kaida IT 2.0 by Toofan Singhal on 28 Sep 2009

What are you saying ? Pak is walking and 'talking' so fast that Uncle Sam has promised 7.5 billion more in next 5 years! This was done by making the Taliban so much more powerful since 9/11. We are planing to next create ISI 2.0 and Taliban 2.0 - this is long term plan to get 15 billion dollar aid by next year. Pakistan's IT ( international terrorism ) industry is based on a solid foundation called Al Qaeda. It has plans to grow at 8.7% per annum for next 5 years.

The last laugh by N.S.Rajan on 28 Sep 2009

Pakistan is a living example of the paradox that you can fool all the people all the time. They indulge in a lot of talk but actually do pretty much what they wish which principally is: hurt India's economy and security to the maximum extent possible. It is a classic case of being prepared to lose one eye as long as the other man can be made to lose two. In the process Pakistan is also laughing all the way to the bank with the US administration pouring billions down its throat regardless of how the free aid is used..This has been happening for ages and will continue. It will be tragic naivety to believe that Pakistan is either cowed down by US pressure to actually do something or that its talk is sincere. The Pakistani leaders who talk publicly are not those who control the terror mechanism against India ,neither do they have any desire whatsoever to do so. The present rigmarole suits everybody in Pakistan and the US cannot do much about it.

One can not end without other by YD on 28 Sep 2009

Perhaps Pakistan can be persueded to stop terrorism but how India will deal with local Islamic and Christian terrorism ? Without internal help Paki terrorism can not secceed. India must also be worried about local terrorists instead of vote bank appeasement.

Internal Terrorism by Anup on 28 Sep 2009

I completely agree with YD, there is a fast growing internal terrorism from certain sections of the muslim population and the Christian Missionaries

ROOT CAUSE by NAVIN ASTI on 28 Sep 2009

The internal Terrorism will not be addressed since Congress and its top in Government as well as party level are mainly responsible for harbouring terrorism indirectly just to remain in power. For them PARTY INTEREST FIRST,NATION LAST.Foolish voters and foolish selfish Media rallying behind Cngress are responsible for this state of the Nation.

US Pressure by D.A.Eswar on 28 Sep 2009

It is very clear US is putting pressure on India to talk to Pakisthan under UPA leadership and Pakisthan is also putting pressure on India as US is supporting with Aid and Arms. Pak is using Aid and Arms against India rather than their brothers Taaliban. Please change title.

stop wasting time......... by amar on 28 Sep 2009

pakistan is not going to stop the terror policy, so wasting time

Pak is under tremendeous pressure from US to be fair by L.C.Bilandani on 28 Sep 2009

Yes the US in putting tremendeous pressure to Pak govt. to come clean in the matter of terrorism. This they are doing in thier own interest and not with any sympathy with Indians. They know it well that terrorism is terrorism whether it is targetted against India or USA.In 26/11attack USA lost 5 of its citizens and those 5 lives are thier main motive to pressurise pak to deal firmly with terrorism and not any love for India.Ofcourse indirectly it favours our nation. The same terrorist who are plotting against India will turn thier head towards US once it suits them and hence US wants to pressurise pak to shun each and every terroist activity.Intellec class here in India feels humiliated at every appeal of Indian to US after every terrorist attack or increased activities in POK.US and allies have woken up to the fact that India will reject the peace proposals till pakistan shows that it has taken action against the persons named in 26/11 attacks. It is a do or die situation for pakistan.

Is Pakistan under pressure . by Abdulmajeed Khan Advocate on 28 Sep 2009

Dear sir, Pakistan has never worked under pressure,of any country. They believe in meeting the crises on the shoulders of others, first some should come forward with billions of dollars. They are fully equipped with weaponry, have maintained their balancing power.Politicians from Mr. Zardari to policeman all are working under the control of ISI and US president too is aware in this aspect. Afganistan is possessing Uranium mines 70% of the world, because of that US is controlling the soil of Afghanistan and providing billions of dollars to Pakistan for achieving his goal, So no sorry no thanks policy has been adopted in this region.

Goal ? by shaminder on 28 Sep 2009

Ahahh if this is state of mind of an advocate what could be condition of an uneducated person ? U have 70 % of world's uranium? Uranium is a metal Mr Advocate not jihadis.Shave your beard and have glass of red wine.It would help you to know the gutter in which your country is lying and achieving the goal of self destruction.

India should use this opportunity by Giri Girishankar on 27 Sep 2009

It is high time the US and its allies put pressure on Pakistan to address India's concerns on Pak terrorism. They should also ram some good sense into the Pakistani mind to operate as a responsible nation and a good neighbor. May be the US is doing this because they need all the help that they can get from Pakistan in its campaign against the Taliban and the Al Qaida. In any case, a Pakistan with a reformed mind-set is welcome. It has only to gain. It has to rid its mind off its obsession about separating Kashmir from India.Even assuming that Pakistan will change its mind under pressure from the US and its allies, and India conducts a responsible discussion with its neighbor to improve their mutual relations, India has the responsibility to strengthen its security and defense against Pakistan to be the maximum deterrent as possible. There cannot be a let down on this. The next government in Pakistan may like to get back to the country's traditional approach.

No Talks with Pakis till they take stringent action by Veliyam Sasi on 27 Sep 2009

The back door diplomacy being muted by Pakis will undermine the sentiments of billion plus indians. Hope the UPA Govt will continue the tough stand of no talks till the link between ISI and terror groups are severed and the culprits of 26/11 brought to justice as soon as possible.

Jehad will continue by Shri on 27 Sep 2009

Mean spirited Pakistanis will not take action against Syeaad Hafeez till they create another Syead Hafeez.Jehad Against India will continue in form of terror attacks as it is warranted by religion as well as govenrnment of Pakistan.

Untrustworthy Pakis by Hero Vaz on 27 Sep 2009

The Pakis know that they have the US and NATO by their balls. They are in a position to clandestinely sabotage the West's efforts to put down extremism and terrorism. In fact, that is what they are doing presently. They are totally untrustworthy. They will not give in or change to accommodate India. The west has to use its aid as their weapon to deal with Pak. Aid should be denied so long the Pakis continue their rotten ways.

Diplomacy and terrorism by A. Pradeep on 27 Sep 2009

History shows that you cannot defeat terrorism by practicing soft diplomacy. The US is treating India as a little child who cries a lot. A little hug, candies and off you go. All the pressure from the US for the past year hasn't yielded any results. Pakistan knows how to play this game by providing token gestures and making loud statements. This drama will go on for eternity.

Pakis under pressure by kk on 27 Sep 2009

No one can put Pakis under pressure as they don't give a shit about Americans or any one. They only care about how to squeeze more money from the world. I think Pasthun, Sindhis and Balochis are suffering under Pakis Punjabis suppression and India should fully support the cause of these people for complete liberation. This should help solve some of the terrorism problem with the Pakis.

Dejavu "all over again" by rahul on 27 Sep 2009

This looks like a rerun of a bad movie and no popcorn to boot. The usual ballet is being performed by the usual performers and the result is a foregone conclusion- an erudite statement from three capitals in the usual diplomatic jargon ,a lot of handshakes ,a photo op, and the promise to do more. Soon a high level joker from Pakistan will visit India, bollywood stars will be paraded ,a grand party will be thrown and it will amore all over again till the next disaser strikes and the process will start all over again.

India preparing to capitulate again? by arun lal on 27 Sep 2009

A cursory reading and joining of the dots of reports in Pak media and comments made by Krishna, US Dept of State and Pak representative will show you that India is preparing to capitulate again as it did in Egypt. This could include "we are both victims of terror and must work together" statement and some kind of Track II. Unfortunately, Track II to Pakistan means Saeed, JeM, and terror attacks etc whereas in India, it involves romantic idealistic idiots who go over to Pak, eat kababs, recite Urdu couplets and feel happy. They forget hundreds of victims of murder and Paki terror. It is about to happen again.

IT ALL ENACTING FOR CONSUMPTION FOR INDIAN PUBLIC by n.r.i on 27 Sep 2009

Pak is Jihad Country. by Mohammed on 27 Sep 2009

What a load of nonsense. Terror strikes in India will continue, as it is in the Pakistani interest to do so. The Pakistani 'people' support terrorism against innocent Indians. Shouldn't the Indian support terrorism against the poor innocent suffering Pakistani pashtun?

To Mohammed by Krupa on 27 Sep 2009

Well said Mohammed but I disagree with your suggestion of India supporting terrorism against poor innocent pakistanis. I do agree however that the Pakistani army and ISI needs round the clock bottom breaking bombardment to pay for the sins that it has perpetrated in Pakistan as well as in its eastern and western borders
